Win98SE BSOD on startup

I recently got a Gateway G6-400 to use for older flight sims, and am having problems on startup with it. I'm running Win98SE, and the specs for the computer and hardware are here http://support.gateway.com/support/srt/docs.asp?sn=0010244534 (though not everything is installed, I stripped it down.) What's happening is I get a BSOD right about the time when the Windows start sound plays. Sometimes I can key out of it, sometimes I can't. I started in safe mode, ran msconfig, and unchecked everything on the "startup" tab then restarted in normal mode. I got the BSOD again but keyed out of it and there was an error message saying that mmtask caused an error. I don't have the exact message right now but can get it later, it's kind of a PITA since I have to switch my monitor, mouse, keyboard, and speakers from my main PC to the "new" one. Any ideas?

 

Do you have the 98SE CD?

Best way is to format and start again, and install the latest drivers, but if not, easiest way is to install Windows over itself.

 

Yeah, I just got done messing with it for about 1/2 hour and couldn't get it to start cleanly at all, or to give me the same error(s) every time....so a-formattin' I will go. Better make sure I have copies of all my drivers because that PC isn't hooked up to the web.

 

Don't have any hardware installed that you don't need, then get the latest drivers ready to install.

Still a no-go, even after fdisk and a format I'm still getting the BSOD on startup. But, it's usually recoverable. The PC originally came with Win95 so I think I'm going to try installing that to see if it makes a difference.
