Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but running AMD Athlon 1GHz with Win98SE and checking device manager for conflicts appeared to show everything was working OK. I then ran HWINFO /UI which came up with the following, whch I dont understand:-

The first two are classed as warnings, and the rest are errors. Should I be worried - I've had problems with startup and shutdown recently. Is this related?
I also tried running PMTShoot in relation to the startup problem. This showed:-
    DevNode NETWORK\FAMILY\0000
    Device Microsoft Family Logon
    Call: WM_DEVICECHANGE, DBT_DEVICEREMOVECOMPLETE, 1 Param=810D700 to PTSERIAL
    Return: BSM_ERROR_SOMEONE_FAILED
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi Halo,
Thanks for the reply - I thought I had already replied to your request, but I've just checked and apparently haven't. Maybe I'm looking for problems where there aren't any with the IRQ thing - thanks for the link.
This thread is a spin-off from my startup problem (please see 'intermittent Win98SE startup problem' thread). I'm running an AMD Athlon XP 1GHz with PCChips M830LR motherboard and SiS735 chipset (neither updated since 2001  ). The OS is up to date, as is AV (AVG freeware). I'll check your antispyware link, but I run updated Adaware, Spybot, Spyware doctor and CCleaner regularly, which usually don't show many problems.
The problem is the initial bootup from power off. Running startup with confirmation gives a flashing cursor after loading the mouse driver, and then nothing. After rebooting a couple of times, things are then OK, and the computer can be restarted OK frequently in the same session, so adding/removing things from startup using msconfig doesn't show any problems. In relation to the Win98SE startup problem, I also tried running a power management program, PMTShoot (?). This showed a problem on running:-
    DevNode NETWORK\FAMILY\0000
    Device Microsoft Family Logon
    Call: WM_DEVICECHANGE, DBT_DEVICEREMOVECOMPLETE, 1 Param=810D700 to PTSERIAL
    Return: BSM_ERROR_SOMEONE_FAILED
The computer has a password logon page for different users, but the initial startup doesn't get this far (see 'intermittent startup problem' for the saga). Could this be the problem?
About the shutdown - less of an annoying problem because I end up turning the power switch at the back of the computer off - but from Start>ShutdownWindows, pressing shut down sometimes works, sometimes it reboots and sometimes freezes. Have never seen a page 'Windows is shutting down' or 'it is safe to turn off the computer' like I did with Windows 95
Thanks in advance for any help.
