    I am running "Big Fix" to receive notification of patches and security issues for Win98SE which I am using. I received the following patch notice and was wondering if it applies to Win09SE. Anyone know if this is an issue?

    SECURITY: Buffer Overrun in MDAC Function Could Allow Code Execution

    Microsoft has released a patch eliminating a security vulnerability in the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) functions. An attacker who successfully exploited this flaw could gain control over the computer. After downloading and installing this patch, your computer will no longer be susceptible to this vulnerability.

    Note: Installation of this upgrade will require you to reboot your computer.

    Muskie,

    Seems to me that the ONLY safe path for you here is to crank up IE and go to Windows Update. If a "Critical" list comes up, and if it includes that one, I'd get it. Otherwise, no.

    Thanks Wisewiz, I already did that. I didn't know if the Windows Update is still supporting Win98SE updates or not. I do however get a notice that I should download the .Net program, but I don't know if I need that neither. It' s a 2 hr. download with dialup.

    Bob, There should be a readme file that goes with the update downloads, it will give you more information on the downloads.

    I wouldn't bother unless you try to use a new program down the road that requires .Net support.
    I fugured you were thinking about the end-of-support issue. You know now that support has been extended to 2006, yes?

    .NET is not a critical update. Don't worry about that. I believe the Windows Update site is still supporting 98.

    Thanks everyone I think I'll pass on the MDAC download and with Big Fix. I'll stick to Windows Update. ;)

    Now THAT's a good decision to start the day with! Weel done.

    (Now if we could just always rely on Windows Update to be right, then ...)

    AND, if they would only make them uninstallable, (when they have been wrong.)

    Amen, brethren!

    And I'll say Hallelujah! and dwell together with Bill's empire in much more unity, if they ever do make sure they're all uninstallable.

    <just kidding, nomad.>

    (That crippler a year or more ago got my machine and brought it to a crawl. Thank G (Gates, that is) they had the foresight to make that bugger uninstallable. I fought the crawl for an hour or so every way I could think of, then uninstalled the "fix", used the Restore Point that had been created automatically, and was slinging hash at high speeds again in no time. The revised version of a short while later did me no harm at all.)
