After searching MG all I found were really old posts on winamp. Winamp forums themselves have never once resolved an issue, I've always had to jack with it until I finally figured it out. This problem I'm having with Winamp 5.621 is causing my brain to bleed.
File associations. I've used Winamp as for many years and never had this problem until recently, and I am unable to link it to anything other than a recent OS reinstall (7 64bit) , but I've done previous reinstalls and did not encounter this problem.
I'm having trouble with setting file associations and right click menu settings.
Options>preferences>file types : I set to Audio only, and check Show winamp actions in the folder context menus.
Options>preferences>shell options : I set to 'enqueue & play' as default file action

I then click "close" and the settings instantly disappear. I can go right back into the menus I just mentioned and my changes are undone. I have spent the past week jacking with this on occasion, and today decided I would jack with it until I fix it. I can't fix it. I have just spent an entire hour reading every preference menu entry, every option, everything and I just cant figure out why this is happening. I hate to do another re-install of winamp itself due to the customizations I have done to Milkdrop, it makes a reinstallation very time consuming and all the settings changes I have to do take forever.
I feel like I may be overlooking something obvious here, as I sometimes look for more technical fixes when there is a much more basic fix appropriate, but I'm stuck on this one. I hope there's a winamp guru 'round here ! :wave

AARGH. It wont let me change it off of read only. I have edited permissions to full control, I uncheck read only, it processes all the files inside winamp folder, and then it's instantly set back to read only . I cannot change the main winamp folders, nor can I change subfolders and files from read only.
Other settings stay where i put them (visualization, general options, play settings etc.)

Does using the attrib command work? I would type cmd in the search bar and then right click and "Run as administrator"

bah I only have a few minutes this morning.
File path is D:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp
Im getting path not found. I must be typing something incorrectly .

When you first run the command prompt, it should show C: as the drive. Now type D:
    Then
    CD<space>Program Files (x86)
    CD<space>Winamp

This should bring you to the Winamp directory.

    Then type
    attrib<space>-r<space>*.*<space> /s

If you still get an error then try this utility to set the attributes. Just be sure you are doing it to the Winamp folder.

Sorry, only have a moment. I tried the cmd line solution. No error, it paused as if processing, but didnt work. I downloaded the utility, seemed like it was working, no errors, problem persists. I'll have time later to do more research. I am becoming obsessed with this.

That would definitely be the way to go if the +s does not work. Take ownership and then try the attrib command again.

Ok I have tried every method in this thread to no avail. All methods pause while processing (the winamp folder contains a LOT of sub files/folders) and they all appear to be working, I am getting no errors, yet when I clear the read only BOX (not a tick mark) and it once again processes all sub files/folders, and I return to check, the box has returned to read only. I have full read/write in permissions, have tried the two different utilities several times each, and the command line several times. Nothing so far has worked. Hopefully today I may have some time to do better research myself. I appreciate your help though tgell . If we can't figure this out today, I may just have to try a re-install, maybe putting winamp on my C: drive instead of D: . Not sure yet.

It appears I may be able to sidestep the problem by installing directly to C: or putting it in PUBLIC folder. Niether of these options are really a problem, except for the amount of time it will take to do the reinstall and setting up my modifications AGAIN . Bleh.

Well I guess Im gonna have to try installing winamp on C: root . Bleh . I'll do it later this weekend and report with the results. Thanks tgell !
