    HI All:

This is the first time I have used one of these forums, so I hope i'm doing this right. One of our work computers has been infected with a virus that Symantec can't seem to get rid of. The information that the virus scan keeps giving me is as follows:

    Scan type: Scheduled Scan
    Event: Virus Found!
    Virus name: Trojan Horse
    File: C:\WINNT\system32\winbjv32.dll
    Location: C:\WINNT\system32
    Computer: CANAIMA
    User: Administrator
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine failed :
Date found: Friday, September 08, 2006 2:38:47 AM

Symantec scans daily and has come up with this result every day for about the last week. Can anyone help me with this. Many thanks to anyone who can!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

That is a winlogonhook infection and it quite often comes along with a Virtumonde infection. And neither Symantec or any other paid program will remove it even though this infection has been around for at least 9 months. These big companies with all their resouces seem quite unable to do what we can do manually with a few free tools!

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

      • [*]runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
        [*]newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

thank you very much chaslang! i'll be back at my office monday and will complete those steps then. i'm so happy to have found this place since all the mainstream a.v. programs out there just can't seem to get the job done any more, leaving the layman like me no option other than to reformat. i'd really like to make a donation to this place! do you know where to do that?

MG's does not have any methods in place to accept donations! You can support MGs by sending your friends here and by buying Geek-Wear (see the main page links are in the right side under INFO) or you can donate using Pay-Pal to me personally if you would like. It's your choice whether you do or you don't.

When you complete the steps, make sure to attach all logs!

Alright Chaslang, I have done everything that was recommended in the READ AND RUN ME FIRST thread. I saved logs of everything and as well as a record of what I deleted from Add/Remove Programs. The last three things that in the list of what I deleted from there came up with an error message saying that the files were missing or had already been deleted but I proceeded anyway and they were removed from the Add/Remove Programs list. Other than that, no problems occured but Symantec is still telling me that I have the infection posted in the original message.

Goto Add/Remove Progams and uninstall the below:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
Java 2 Runtime Environment Standard Edition v1.3.1_18
    Mozilla Firefox (1.5)
    ToolBar888

Then install the current version of FireFox from: Mozilla Firefox

Now please download and install Registrar Lite Make sure you select a Majorgeeks download link and not the Authors!

Run Registrar Lite navigate to the following key and take ownership of it (explained further down):

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\mssmgr

To take ownership of the key do the following:
    • Copy & Paste the registry key from above into the address bar of Registrar Lite and hit the enter key. This will bring you to the registry key.
    • Click-on Security in the Menu
    • Select Take Ownership
    • Now leave RegistrarLite running and continue
    • Now run the REGISTRY PATCH below in this message.
    • Tell me the results. Any error messages?
    • Now in RegistrarLite click View and then Refresh
    • Now navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\mssmgr
    • Does the above mssmgr key still exist! If so, right click on it and select Delete.
    Here is the Registry Patch

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixWLK.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

After completing ALL of the above instructions, continue here!

Start by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

IMPORTANT: You should print or save the below locally, so you can refer to them while offline. You must exit all browsers before running the below steps and it would be best if you actually physically unplug your cable to the internet, reboot, and do not run anything but what I give you to do. Also it would be good to exit all processes and items in your System tray.

Do the above before continuing! Okay unplug your cable now.

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    - Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of winbjv32.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the winbjv32.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    sstqp.dll
    ddcyyya.dll

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of winbjv32.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Now repeat the above step for the below DLLs (If you do not find the dll, just continue on):
    sstqp.dll
    ddcyyya.dll

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Please run HijackThis and click on the Open the Misc Tools Section button on the open page. Then select Open process manager on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click Kill process. Then click yes.
    C:\WINNT\system32\ishost.exe
    C:\WINNT\system32\ismini.exe

After killing all the above processes, click Back.
Then please click Scan and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to Reset Web Settings:
    1. If you have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, goto step 2. If not, skip to step 3.
    2. Now right click on your desktop Internet Explorer icon and select Properties. Then click the Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK. Then skip step 3.
    3. If you do not have an Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop, click Start, Control Panel (for some systems it may be Start, Settings, Control Panel), Internet Options, Programs tab and then click "Reset Web Settings". Now go back to the General tab and set your home page address to something useful like www.majorgeeks.com. Click Apply. Click Delete Cookies, Click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too, Click OK. When it finishes Click OK.
Note for IE 7 users: You need to select Internet Options then the Advanced tab and then Reset Internet Explorer Settings!

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK! This will open a command prompt window. In the command prompt window enter the below commands each followed by the Enter key.
    del %windir%\temp\win*.*
    exit

If you get an error message while doing the above command prompt step, just ignore it and continue!

Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).
If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below folders and delete them if found:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\{943BF128-0702-1033-1212-011022010001}

Now attach a new HJT log and tell me how the steps went.

Also attach a new logs from ShowNew and GetRunKey.
