    I have a sony vaio VPCEL24FX windows 7 64 bit home premium 500gb hard drive 4gb ram
I haven't use the laptop for over year, so updated the windows and installed the required updates. After restart the problems began. The issues that I am experiencing as follow:
-delete shortcut appears, more then 100 message at the same time when icon (both in desktop and start menu) is clicked.
-IE doesn't respond or is slow to open when clicked.
-Boot manager at startup, Windows 7 is the only operating system.
the olny way the problem gets solve is to run task manager and the task in application(takes up 5 minutes to perform due to the number of applications) and end it. Did a virus scan, sfc scan, no virus and no violation. As for ckeck disk, always getting cancel at startup.
change the hard drive and ram to new and clean install windows 7, still the same problem.
download and install malwarebytes and follow all the instructions by major geek. The scan found over 9 problems and fix all nine. The only issue that got resolved is the boot manager.
start windows in safe mode and work like I normally do, the problem still persist. Also forgot to mention, window is slow to bootup (5 minutes). I really need a big help please.
sorry my post is long. Thank you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Download Wise Care 365 Pro. It's a giveaway courtesy of WiseCleaner and MajorGeeks.

Check the Startup Programs and the Services. Take snapshots and post them. Someone will advise you which Startup Programs can be Disabled, as well as which services can be Disabled or set to Manual Startup.

PS What do you mean by Windows 7 is the only operating system when you've only installed Windows 7?

    Do you have this update?

Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3011780)

I downloaded this update and installed it and had similar problems. I know it was just this one update, because it happened by itself. I removed the update, and the problems were fixed. Then I reinstalled the update, and everything was fine again. :-o

I am sorry to say that I could not take a snapshot of the startup programs and services because every icon and programs keeps duplicating it's self upon clicking on it with the delete shortcut message. As for updates I was able to access c:/windows >software distribution. When this folder is deleted (with admin privileged) it just seems to find its way back, and reporting that windows is up to date.
when I mention that I have only one operating system, is because to my understanding the purpose of boot manager is if a computer has more then one operating system it would ask a user which system to boot w7 or w8. As for the startup programs there are none except for
google search, (in msconfig) which I install. Nothing in services that doesn't seem right.

    Thanks Merry Christmas

So you can boot into normal Windows 7, is that correct?

Assuming so, can you use the start menu? If you can, type msconfig in the search box and then open the msconfig dialog. Select the boot tab and then safe boot and network. Now see if you can boot into safe mode to see if you have the problems there. If you can get into safe mode with everything working normally, just keep the PC there for awhile as there are several procedures you can run.

It would be great if you could check to see if you have the one update I mentioned, (KB3011780). I noticed some other recent ones in other posters' threads, and maybe I can perform a search of the ones you have installed to find out if one of these may be causing your problem.

Again, if everything is working in safe mode, open the windows updates dialog from the start menu. On the left, select updates history. Look to see if you have (KB3011780). There is a correct way to remove updates, and attempting to delete a folder will not work. I will explain once you check to see if safe mode is working.

There is alot that can be done from safe mode, so let me know if the PC is functioning normally there.

Yes I am able to boot into windows, but it took quit awhile to access misconfiguration. I boot into safe mode and it is the same problem as in normal windows. After finally launching windows update I check update history, no history of updates installed, the list is blank. Ran
check for updates and it reports that windows is up to date. Check software distribution folder, no updates listed, check programs and features, no updates listed as installed.
I have also wipe clean hard drive and clean install windows 7 3 hours ago, and still same issues with updates.:cry.

    Thanks Marry Christmas

When you are next able to boot into Windows safe or normal, go to Computer (your drives), right click on the C: drive and select Properties. At the bottom of the dialog, does it say that Windows is activated?

Don't think this has anything to do with the problem, but I am curious about whether this could be partly the problem.

First thing I would do in this situation is Start->in the search box type event viewer->open Event Viewer->Windows Logs folder->System folder->click on the "Source" header for the dialog so that the events will be in alphabetical order->scroll down to where "disk" would be to see if you have any disk errors listed. Helps to know.

When you get a chance, I recommend running a chkdsk /r. From inside Windows (normal or safe mode)->Start->Accessories->right click on Command Prompt and select "Run as Administrator"->type chkdsk /r (space after chkdsk) and press the enter key. You will then see the message that the chkdsk will be run on the next boot. It might take a very long time, so you may want to start this at night, so it can run over night. chkdsk can take as long as 24 hrs sometimes or even longer. This operation will repair any bad sectors it can. It may ask for an installation disk, in which case you will need that to complete any repairs Windows will attempt. It isn't always required.

The next thing to try if that doesn't work if sfc /scannnow. From the same administrator command prompt as the chkdsk /r operation, type sfc /scannow (space after sfc). This also may request an installation disk to complete.

Let us know how it goes...

I had already try the chkdsk, but it always get cancel at startup, but did not try it with /r, will give it a try. I also use the sfc/scannow and it did not find any problems. I was able to to take a snapshot of the event viewer.

Have you downloaded and installed the drivers from the Sony site for the chipset and network, yet?

Found a situation almost exactly like this where the installation disk turned out to be the problem. First, his system had a hybrid drive. When he attempted to install using a disk that included SP1, the installation gave the same troubles you are having with updates. He then contacted his manufacturer and received an installation disk for Windows 7 without SP1 and the installation succeeded, and Windows updated. Nothing firm, but suspicion was that the hybrid drive may not like SP1 being installed as part of the OS installation.

There are lots of steps that can be tried such as testing the hard drive and testing RAM memory, but they are long tests, and you will need to create boot disks to run them or download and burn UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD). The test programs on that CD will do the job.

Maybe the simplest thing to do would be to try installing from a disk without SP1 to start with. I would go so far as to try to install from a different disk with SP1, too, because burning a disk is no big deal, and attempting to install is better than waiting 24 or more hours for a test to finish. Anyway, here are links to .isos for Windows 7 (Home 64 in your case):

    http://us.informatiweb.net/logiciels/29--windows-7-all-editions-with-and-without-sp1.html

This is the only download I found where you can download a W7 .iso without SP1.

These links are completely legal and legit by the way. They are links to MS' downloads for Windows 7. How to Geek and several other sites have also been given permission to post the links.

It's worth checking the Windows 7 DVD for errors. Here's a link to Ariolic Disk Scanner. It's free, portable and just 1 MB.

Please ignore the recommended program in my previous post. I tried the program and it crashed scanning DVDs. My apologies.:-o

Nero CD-DVD Speed and CDCheck does scan DVDs.

I am following this thread with interest, have you managed to get anywhere?
Something similar happened to an old Toshiba laptop and in my ignorance I just threw it away and bought a new one. With hindsight I should have tried a new Hard drive first, maybe that would have been the answer and worth a few dollars to try. Just a thought.
