I'm dualbooting winxp and win98 on seperate drives. I don't wanna reformat if I don't have to so I need help.. Ok, I just did a clean install of 98 over my old copy of 98 which was originally on my c drive before I moved it to the d drive (but it worked fine on my d drive before so that can't be the problem). But now with XP dual booting it, it freezes after a few mins if i do anything. I can restart with ctrl-alt-delete but I can't get into the task manager. ANy thign that is known to cause 98 crashing/freezing? thanks.

Im thinking that you can't do that chk here
Computers that have Windows 95, 98 (or Windows Me) and Windows XP:

    * Windows 95, 98 or Windows Me must be installed on a basic disk on a partition formatted with FAT or FAT32. If Windows 98 or Windows Me is not installed on the system partition, which is almost always the first partition on the disk, the system partition must also be formatted with FAT or FAT32. (For Windows 95 OSR2, FAT32 may be used.) If Windows 95 is not installed on the system partition, which is almost always the first partition on the disk, the system partition must also be formatted with FAT (or FAT32 for Windows 95 OSR2).

    * Compressed DriveSpace or DoubleSpace volumes won’t be available while you are running Windows XP. It is not necessary to uncompress DriveSpace or DoubleSpace volumes that you will access only with Windows 98.

    * Remember Windows XP must be installed last. Otherwise important files needed for starting Windows XP could be overwritten.

I argee, plus you might want to reload 98 with the other drive disconnected so it won't overwrite the XP files. Plus, you consider turning the second drive into a logic one, this way it reduces the chance of it interfering with the boot up process.

Actually Sixshooter, the problem is that 98 will overwrite the XP bootsector and as such, break the dual boot. The bootsector in question is on the drive with 98. So unhooking drive number 2 won't help.

However, there is always a way to replace the dual boot option.

Install 98, do a repair of Windows XP.

Problem should be taken care of.

Oh, I'll admit that I know very little about XP, I hope to get real familiar with it after I get my tax refund so I can get it.

I'm currently running ME on a XP mainboard...all I can say is that marriage is something to be desired...kinda like the "odd couple"

Yea! I didn't think it would work either which is why I was trying to do it from the BIOS, but it seems to be working well now, just that 98 freezes a lot.. I dunno, I think 98 is messed up somehow (even after the clean install) cause if I try to boot from 98's drive I get a error and it won't work. I Have to boot from XP's drive and select windows 98.
