    I need a network expert!
I have a laserjet 3305 working perfectly on 3 out of 4 windows 10 machines. one holdout is the one that just upgraded from windows 7, wherein the printer was working fine. The printer physically attaches to a windows 10 "server", via usb cable. the server is mounted fine, I use several folders there for backup images etc all working fine no issues. On the Network via Windows Explorer I can "see" the printer fine, do "add printer", force it to locate by browsing the net, but when I go to add it, I get the same connection error. if I try to "Open" the printer directly from the network map, same error.
Switching from Ethernet to WIFI yields no diff result. precisely the same from what I can see.

in frustration I chatted up the win 10 support chatters at Microsoft. 2 of them tried to figure out and failed.
YOU GUYS are smarter than they, which is why I'm here :)

    what shall I try?
oh, BTW I did manually download the driver for it and installed, to no avail.

    thx for help
    z

sure. spooler is fine. first thing checked.
I believe this to be at the core a permissions problem, but I don't know how to prove it or fix it. the "circumstantial evidence": MS Word [via mso 2007] has a "add printer" function to discover a needed printer not in the shortlist. accessing this throws error: "Domain Services cannot be accessed". Strictly speaking, there is no Domain controller. Looking up the fix for that issue and its relation to the printer issue yields a registry repair involving changing key to permit the Administrator accounts full access to print services etc. When I look at these keys in the registry, the Permissions tickboxes are terminally grayed-out, for any Administrator including the built-in. OF COURSE, running sfc scannow [aka "placebo"] yields no "violations". I fought with this another hour+ - nothing so much as changes the errors being thrown.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the printer entirely on the host, and once again, the other three Windows 10 systems immediately discovered and connected in a matter of seconds. no issue whatsoever.

What was the computer and computer specs that was giving the problems.????

Upgrading normally causes some type of issue out 1 out of 5 systems.

If you say that the other windows 10 versions worked just fine than there must be some thing wrong with the upgraded one.

You might have to down grade in order to have this working.I find that some systems that are a tad bit older do not have the correct driver version for that system.

And if my typing seems off i am tired.I am trying to type the best i can.

If windows 7 was working fine i would have not even bothered with the upgrade.

That upgrade that microsoft did caused so many issues that things did not get fixed until a year later.

You might all so have to go into reg edit.

Open regedit & browse to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers. Just to be safe make a backup of the Client Side Rendering Print Providers key

Then delete the Client Side Rendering Print Providers key. Close regedit

    Than reboot system.

And re try to install again.

i decided to live dangerously and downloaded the tweaking.com windows repair tool here.
the Upgrade is clearly defective. reparse records errors, permissions errors, etc etc. it will be interesting to see what happens. at worse I pull the drive and do a clean install.
the sys is a hp dc7900 E8400 warhorse. i've used a number of that family [dc7900 and later to the elites] and they've all done quite well. my luck with upgrades has been marginally better than 4/5 but the bad ones have been REALLY bad. pull drive, start from zero.

    Done.
Clean installed Win10 on 'new' drive, printer installed in literally 3 seconds. the prior "upgrade" hopelessly botched windows. amazing either of the previous accounts could even log-on
