When opening programs and shortcut to folders that are located on the task bar there is a several second delay before it opens. This delay is sometimes 5 - 10 seconds. It doesn't happen all the time. I have searched the web and I used the command line SFC /Scannow, that did not solve the problem. This occurs even when opening first program. My machine specs are i3-4130 @ 3.4GHz, 8GB DDR3, SSD, AMD Radeon R7 240.

Sounds as if the machine is overloaded. Take a good look at your startups and see what can be removed.

One of my Win 10 boxes has the same delay. Changed the hard drives -same delay.

I wrote my reply to Silver as a small bump. There must be some unusual solutions.

I don't have many programs installed on my computer.
    Pale moon
    Visual studio
    Microsoft Office
    Evernote
    Sumatra Pdf
    Slack
    Quicken
    Putty
    Firefox

It doesn't look like there's much in the startup program list. I'm attaching a screenshot of the startup programs.

The only on of your startups that is necessary is Defender. Try disabling the rest and see if there is any noticeable improvement. You can re-enable any you'd prefer to have running.

I tried removing all of them except for defender and a hewlett packard scan application. But, the problem remains.

    Try the following
    https://www.howtogeek.com/246087/how-to-speed-up-a-windows-folder-that-loads-very-slowly/

Force Context Menus to Load Faster:

Press WinKey + R simultaneously, type regedit in the Run dialog, then press OK button to open the Registry Editor. You may want to backup your Registry first.
    Now navigate to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

In the Registry Editor, click Desktop, double click MenuShowDelay in the right pane, reduce the Value Data number to around 100 (but not too less), and click OK.

Thanks, definitely learned from what you posted (and change the setting for "my documents"). However, since I am seeing a problem when opening new programs also (not just when opening folders), I am thinking that the problem is something else.
Also, you mention context menus. It seems that that's the menu that comes up when you right click, or maybe just when you right click the desktop. But, I was not having any problem when right clicking the desktop.

One thing that I failed to mention in the OP is that sometimes after opening a folder, the icons (for PDFs, etc) take a long time to load, and you can see them loading sequentially.

I would agree, the next is to test your hard drive.

    Run Chkdsk
    1. Click on Start menu
    2. Type in command
    3. Right click on Command Prompt in list and select Run as Administrator
    4. Copy and Paste the command into the command window

chkdsk C:/r (Change to the correct driver letter if needed)

Important! If SSD then use chkdsk /f
If the following message is displayed: Choose Y

"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"

    Click on Start menu
    Type in command
Right click on Command Prompt in list and select Run as Administrator
Copy and Paste the following command into the command console
This will create a file called ChkdskLog.txt on your desktop
Upload this file to your next reply

    wevtutil qe Application /rd:true /f:text /c:1 /q:*[System[Provider[@Name='Microsoft-Windows-Wininit']]] > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\ChkdskLog.txt

so for an SSD, is the command chkdsk /f C:/r

No the correct command for SSD would be
    chkdsk c /f

It is checkdsk /F for the command. You will need to reboot system after selecting Y for yes.

I don't think it worked (see attached screen shot). It put my cursor on a new line with >>
No txt document was created on the desktop
I am on an English version of Windows so maybe this part should be a little different?

English version should not matter. It's the way you type it.Type chkdsk /f

  20. Techjourney

    Techjourney Private E-2

Correct if you are at drive c: already then type chkdsk /f or chkdsk c: /f

If you are talking about the following command, it looks like you have a space before the wevutil ....
    Code:
    wevtutil qe Application /rd:true /f:text /c:1 /q:*[System[Provider[@Name='Microsoft-Windows-Wininit']]] > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\ChkdskLog.txt
It should look like exactly as follows in command prompt:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>wevtutil qe Application /rd:true /f:text /c:1 /q:*[System[Provider[@Name='Microsoft-Windows-Wininit']]] > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\ChkdskLog.txt

If you still cannot get it to work another easy option is as follows:

    ListChkDskResult Program
Please download ListChkDskResult by SleepyDude and save it to your desktop.

I am brainstorming on what could be the commonality between the computer that you speak of and my computer. Perhaps we have the same UEFI Bios version?
I could look into further, if you think this is a possible solution. My computer is an HP Pavilion 500-336.
Someone on another forum was suggesting that I do a reinstall over the current installation. If I don't come up with other ideas, I will probably try that in the next couple of days.

Thanks. I tried that and so far I have noticed 2 of the 3 symptoms still:
    -Icons are slow to load
-Opening a directory via a shortcut is slow

I haven't seen this one yet, but I have only been using the computer for about 20 minutes since the clean boot:
    -Programs are slow to open

So, the problem seems to remain.

  27. Techjourney

    Techjourney Private E-2

Since the clean boot is not helping then it is most likely a hardware issue. I recommend the following hardware tests.

    Step 1: Test Hard Drive
Download USB Seatools Boot file to your Desktop

    1. Uncompress the .zip file
    2. Open the USBbootSetup-SeaToolsBootable folder
    3. Double click on the SeaToolsBootable_RC_2.1.2.usbBootMaker.exe file
    4. Follow the steps to create a Bootable USB

    1. Boot from the Seatools USB and Run the program
    2. Once it starts it will scan for all drives connected to your computer.
    3. Select drive you want to test.
    4. Select Short Test if it fails then Stop and go to step 9
    5. If it passes then
    6. Select the Long Generic Test under the Basic Tests menu
    7. When the test is complete you will see the result under Test Status
    8. The test will indicate either Pass or Fail.
    9. Provide the Results in your reply.

    Step 2: Test Memory:
Run memtest86+ version 5.01 for at least 8 passes.
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

This may take hours so plan to run it overnight.
    Testing takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing
Then test 1 RAM module at a time in the same DIMM each for 8 or more passes
When Memtest86+ has completed 8 or more passes take a picture and post an image and upload to your reply
MemTest86+ - Test RAM BSOD Tutorials

Step 3: Stress Test Your CPU - Prime 95
    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/16474-prime95-stress-test-your-cpu.html

    - extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
    - double click on the executable file
    - select "Just stress testing"
    - select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight please run the "Small FFTs" test instead. (run all 3 if you find a problem and note how long it takes to error out with each)
    - "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).

The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History

Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
Monitor the CPU temperature and DON'T let it exceed 85ºC. If it does, then you probably have a CPU cooling problem. This won't necessarily crash the system - but check the output in the test window for errors.
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.

In the part where you describe how to test the hard drive, would that apply to an SSD? Lately, I have been only having my SSD connected since my power supply might be a little weak, and so I have been trying to limit my power usage. Soon I might connect that drive, though.

Yes it is safe to test SSD or HDD.

I created the USB drive to perform the test(s) on the SSD. However, when I change the boot order in the UEFI (similar to a BIOS), the computer does not honor my settings. Instead, it boots to the SSD and when I got back into the UEFI, I can see that the computer has switched the boot order back (SSD is the boot drive, USB drive 2nd). I checked the settings in the UEFI before I exited, so I am not sure what the deal is.[/QUOTE]

Here is some information about each:

The software recommendations that you gave seem like they will be good for future use. I have never really done any tests on my hard drives. But, I did find a really good test for testing hard drives when you don't have data on them several months ago.

Another computer issue that I have been having is that the internet is very slow (not sure when this started but I didn't notice much until recently). However, this seems to just happen when the computer has recently been booted up. I am really not sure of the time but maybe for the first 15 minutes after I boot up, the internet is very slow. Right now I am on an old computer (the problematic computer is running memtest86+ right now) and the internet seems fast. Same thing with You Tube on my phone. One interesting thing that I have noticed is that posters on help forums like this rarely seem to point fingers at the network card or the network hardware on the motherboard. I am no expert but since I have completed just the test on the SSD so far (and the program that we ran detected no problems), the computer's network hardware seems to be a new suspect. When I am opening up a folder shortcut, there are network computers or servers that my computer might be trying to connect to (there is a remote network folder and a remote computer). As far as programs running slow on my computer, I believe a lot of programs like to connect to the internet when they start up (for things such as checking for updates). Maybe the problem is even the network cable. One other change that I made that somewhat coincided with the problems is that I set up a voice over IP phone, using a regular phone and piece of hardware that has a port for the phone and a port for the network cable. The issues with the computer are not isolated to when I am on the phone.

I put 4 cores for now. I figured that if it's supposed to be 8, I can always run it again.

Within the first 5 minutes, the temperature for one of the cores was at 87 degrees C. So, I stopped the test. I am using a program called Open Hardware Monitor but I don't see anything saying the RPMs for the CPU cooler (or even something to tell us that the CPU cooler is running).

  40. Silverthunder

    Silverthunder Sergeant

I looked in the UEFI and it says
~1400 rpms for the processor cooler.
~965 rpms for something else, can't remember what the UEFI called it. I think that my computer just have 1 case fan so it's probably that case fan.

I cleaned out the thermal paste that was in there and put some new thermal paste in. However, since it was my first time doing this, it might not be the best job (can't see in the end, how it's distributed after the install). I started running the prime95 test and the temperatures are better. It has been running for 7 minutes and so far the high temp is 78 degrees C.

High of 83 degrees C after 40 mins. So, still issues.
