    Help needed please.

Not sure if this is a hardware or software issue.

I have an HP Notebook laptop 15-ba077Sa with 4 Gb Ram and 1Tb drive. It has Windows 10, Pro Plus 2019, Firefox and Avast free antivirus with windows firewall. It is set for windows automatic updates. Use microsoft outlook.com.live for emails.

About 4 weeks ago the curser started freezing and unfreezing every few minutes, things hung during use and it became difficult and very slow to use. I had made no other changes or downloads and I mostly use the machine for surfing, emails.

I restarted several times but the problem was still there. I tried to run System Restore but it would not complete. Tried troubleshoot hardware but nothing found or fixed.

Eventually I managed to run Chkdsk which took hours to complete but did find and fix errors and upon restart everything appeared to be working normally.

Several days later the same problems returned exactly with curser freezing and unfreezing and system hanging. This time it led to “Preparing Automatic Repair” but never continued. I restarted several times but it always came up with Preparing Automatic Repair. So anyway I left it with the message on the screen and after several hours it continued to the Repair menus. I managed to run chkdsk from the menues. After an automatic restart, the computer appeared to work normally again for several days. I have only used mail and internet surfing.

The same problem has occurred again for the third time and after restarting the system it opens with black screen and “Preparing Automatic Repair”. I also tried a hard reboot to non avail.

I cannot get it to continue from Preparing Automatic Repair after restarts, pressing power button off and on again 3 times and am stuck on this screen. It has been there for 2 days now.

I need help to get back to Windows desktop and then to resolve what is causing the hanging and crashing to repeat.

    Many thanks in advance.

One, stop shutting the computer down and let the repair run. Did you ever look at task manager to see what was throttling the computer?

    Hello Foogoo
I have stopped shutting the computer down, it has been sitting for over a week now with the Preparing Automatic Repair message on a black screen with the spinning circle above it. It does not progress from there and I have not been able to get it to this time around.
I have not looked at Task Manager, but am not sure I would recognise something that was throttling the computer. I would see the activities that were using the most memory amongst the list of live activities. If Firefox was open it would usually be using the most memory and would be bigger depending on the number of pages I had open. However I cannot get to that now.
Might starting up in Safe Mode help, not sure how to do that in Windows 10. What about pressing f11 on starting, would that get me to the Troubleshoot menus, or does it directly start the re-installing Windows and wiping all my files, and does it wipe Office suite and other software too.

I don't want to be the messenger of bad news but running Windows 10 on a HDD is always going to be a problem. Your time and effort might be better rewarded with purchasing a SSD drive and everything might feel smoother...

    I came across this...

    Good luck with the quest.

    Try these steps
    1. Open the Windows boot troubleshooting menu.
    2. Select See advanced repair options > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
    3. Type the following command and press Enter: bcdedit
    4. Check the values for identifier and recoveryenabled. The identifier value should be {default} and recoveryenabled should be yes.
    5. Now, type this command and press Enter:
      bcdedit /set {default} recoveryenabled no
    6. This will disable the automatic boot repair. If the command doesn't work, try the following command:
      bcdedit /set {current} recoveryenabled no
    7. Once you are finished, restart your PC.
    From https://www.makeuseof.com/fix-stuck-in-automatic-repair-loop-windows-10/
I had this happen and when I disable auto repair I could see the bluescreen and find out what the issue was.

But how do I get to the troubleshooting menu, I am still stuck on the repair loop screen.

I read the notes of www.makeuseof.com and would like to try these steps, but pressing f8 at startup does nothing and still opens at the Repair revolving circle, so I still cannot get to the Troubleshooting menu

Took my laptop to a reputable repair shop who diagnosed the hard disk had major faults. I have now installed an SSD and it runs super quick and very smooth.
    Thanks to all who contributed.
