So the thing is umm, sometimes my windows shuts itself down for no reason and without my input or permission during the night, dunno why but everytime it does, umm the organization of my desktop gets reset. It seems my system setting whenever this happens get rest now, I had set mp3 files to play with windows media player, and it's back to playing on stupid groove which i utterly hate and despise.

I'm actually curious if anyone else who made the switch is having similar problems. this issue has ben going on at least sometime after making the upgrade, but it neve before caused my mp3 files to default to playing on groove before, so whatever the issue is it's getting worse for one reason or another.

In cases where I normally shut it down and start it up aat a later date this problem doesn't happen. I did recently update all my drivers so if thats the reason why then tell me.

What system (hardware) do you have?
Is the shutdown as a result of a Windows power scheme? This is typically found on laptops to preserve battery power.

Alternatively, is the shutdown a result of a system crash? Typically, these result in blue screen of death (BSOD) and, if configured, will leave a crash dump file that you can use to analyse.

It looks most probable, that as a result of driver updates, you have a bad driver that causes a BSOD and forces a "shutdown" as a result.

You can analyse system crashes by using Whocrashed: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/whocrashed_free_home_edition.html This will determine a likely culprit in the event of a driver crash.

In the event of a system crash like this, the system sometimes reverts back to state that it considered is stable.

According to whocrashed there aren't any chrash dumps on my comp so perhaps the issue I'm seeing is another problem entirely. Then again my stupid computer ONLY does this during the night when I'm either asleep or not using it so unfortunately I cannot mniter it. My comp's power seting are designed to have it run for a decent amount of time. In any case I sverely doubt that it's a crash, since this restart only happens somewhere after I go to sleep which is around 2 am. It seems very odd that the only time the computer crashes is when I'm not awake or even using the computer.

The default setting for Win 10 to install its updates is 3AM. I would try shutting it down when you retire as that will cause any waiting updates to start installing and you can then see what if anything is happening.

why 3 AM? and is there a way to change the default settings. after all I never can tell when there are updates waiting to be installed and thuse choosing a time like 2 would be a beter choice.

Perhaps this will help. There have been times when an update or updates have downloaded to my computer and I've had a screen that says "we'll install updates when you're not using your computer" and you then have the option of changing the time at that screen as well as when you select "Notify to Restart" in the Advanced Options and Windows 10 has downloaded an update that requires a restart to complete the installation. Definition updates for Windows Defender and some other items don't require a restart.

It seems the updates are in fact causing the settings on my computer to get reset. Updating the high definition sound driver reset the volume level.

The same thing happened on my Latitude E6400. I just clicked on the speaker icon in the notification area, reset the volume level to where I wanted it and muted the sound (I do a lot of things on my computer while my sister's still sleeping and I don't want to disturb her).

I would all so run a virus check as well on your system if this has been recently you might have some type of malware or virus on your system doing this.

I think it may just be part and parcel of the device driver installation. The same thing happened in Win 8.1 and 10 when my high def audio driver was updated by MS/Windows Update. I run Windows Defender scans weekly (I update definitions twice daily) and no malware has been found.
