    Hello,

This is an age old problem but I have an application (.exe) I cannot install even after I've turned off
security settings. Perhaps I missed something.

So I have to either make an exception to this 'false positive' which I don't know how to do in security settings or
get some guidance on the numerous steps necessary to turn off 'virus' detection.'

Also you can answer a question that may solve this: if I simply disconnect ethernet, will that stop the virus alerts? I have a samall home network Workgroup. I'll try just disconnecting the PC where the
problem is and rerun the .exe.

Thanks for answering. Yes not a virus problem but what I knew to be a false positive. I have it under control now but will read the Add an exclusion to Win Security shown above. Frankly I never have had to use things like that-- very few problems.

Now and then that happens even with well known software and a wide range of antivirus. If it's software that changes certain settings or accesses specific system files then an antivirus might flag it.

Antivirus doesn't know "good" from "bad" it's just doing the job it is programmed to do. Every new version of some software has to be whitelisted by the antivirus vendors.

I'm trying to catch up on all the problems that landed at once.
Maybe a fresh topic is needed but my other difficulty is in the Win10 repair disk one makes
that has the command prompt... ok I'll make a different topic. :-/

I followed the advice and did the MS procedure to manage exceptions-- it failed on the folder and on the .exe I wanted to run. So, on setting Defender itself what is the logic?

If I have Defender off (which I try to do all the time on Win10 since it is so invasive), do I have to have it On to make the exception?

Every time I get into one of these error situations, I get the 'everything you know is wrong message.' It's very tiring.

If you don't mind saying what are you trying to install? I'd like to try it on my end.

It's something not approved by Redmond. A counter offer: give just something from Major Geeks that works for you. I'll at least know the exclusion works then and procede from there.

Anything from Iobit will sometimes be blocked but I have always been able to add them as an exception. Driver Booster to be more specific. I usually go to Virus & threat protection > Protection history and use the drop down option to allow the exe to run.

Edit: I just checked and the last file I added was from FreeFileSync. Defender was blocking it and I was able to add it to the Exclusions.

Ok. I'll look it up and try to run the FreeFileSync then use the exception thing again.
Then if I understood what you said, look atr the dropdown at protection history to see the entry.
FreeFileSync is, then an .exe, not a folder ?

I think what I have to do on this is go to the source and do what they say. Reason: FileSync program and I also loaded IOBit Unblock both just passed through exe with no errors.

I don't keep up with Windows security as much as I used to but I do know that in recent years Microsoft has added the ability to block malware at the hardware/firmware level.

Yea. Windows must detect whatever you are trying to install as a severe security threat so good luck.
