Yeah, it's optional, but it will surprise a lot of ppl to find that their computer may be file sharing without their knowledge. I'm ok with it as this is just a clean install in a VM.

I agree plodr, it should ask before turning it on. You can define your connection as chargeable, whether it is or not, and then these bandwidth consuming apps are supposed not to work. But as you say, the average user wouldn't know about that and could get charged for this usage.

Early adopters need to be pretty savvy but most who will upgrade are not I suspect.

    Agreed with plodr and Earthling.

Why is WUDO not turned off by default?
Everybody I know has a PC, Tablet and/or Smartphone. And not one is interested in the workings of Windows. I will not alow Microsoft to use my bandwith to upload files to other PCs.

Looking at the bigger picture, countries are going to block access to Microsoft's websites and other products. And there will be the inevitable lawsuits. Microsoft's EULA, TOS, etc. does not govern how the bandwith I pay for is used.

Lastly, the lowlifes behind malware are licking their lips...:yum

Opinions on what the default should be aside, if something can be turned off without hacks, it is unequivocally optional.

Does this seem to anyone like steps toward the software online/online file storage and sharing that has been talked about so much over the last 5 years? I have always felt that that is too much power for software companies and storage providers and that ultimately (who knows when) there would be some sort of backlash from another source.

If MS were suddenly confronted with competition from someplace that didn't see things the same way as MS, I wonder what would happen(?). Other commercial operating systems than Windows and Apple has always been an inevitability in my mind. I feel that it's just a matter of time...

I don't know how you guys feel about this, but I prefer the standard local storage and actually paying for software with the disk and all. The challenges when it comes to security are very large I admit, but at least we would have the choice over who is securing our files. Also, security programs are inching forward and getting better, already...even free ones are fairly comprehensive these days.

I feel like I'm always the last to get what's going on, but some of what's happening with Windows 8 and 10 seem to point to changes I personally wouldn't care for. Making the change to Windows 7 for me was easy (just a matter of a PC that would run the OS efficiently), but I dont' feel that way about 8 or 10...

   -o

When I discovered we now had to be careful about what we said in front of the telly it felt like the final nail in the privacy coffin. It's the unstoppable march of technology AtlBo and it would take mass rejection by us lemmings to stop it. Given that even our eight year olds regard an iphone as totally indispensable there wouldn't seem to be much prospect of that!

OneDrive is set up by default in 8/8.1/10 so online file storage and sharing has been a reality for quite some time. Users' only defence is self education so no wonder joe public are seen as sitting ducks, both by commercial interests and cyber-criminals.

Just to add some flesh to the above, when I looked in OneDrive in the Win 10 VM, which is simply an unconfigured clean install, all my documents from my main Win 7 system were available. OK that's because I chose to use OneDrive as a secondary backup for my main system, something I'm now thinking about the wisdom of :-o

I agree with you Earthling about what it would take for us all to beat commercial interests off of our personal computers (not to say proprietary software...rather unauthorized internet connections and data thievery). That should start with someone or some people educating PC users of the risks they are being subjected to. No way I can know for sure that Microsoft isn't sorting through my files for valuable information when I store them on OneDrive. PC users aren't being helped to understand this, and there isn't a figurehead for this.

Personally, I wonder if there is a deeper reason, because motivating the general public would seem simple enough a thing to achieve, given the circumstances as they are. Honestly, I have this weird feeling that PC users just don't want to know. Curious...:-orolleyes

    My experience with the upgrade:

I did not do a clean install but rather let the machine upgrade.
Install did not take very long
Clicking all those security issues on/off is something that needs for you to pay very close attention.
First boot worked well.....for less than 30 seconds
Computer kept freezing shortly after boot and resolution was wonky
Thought maybe something was wrong with the video driver
I was right. The driver (Nvidia) reverted back to a generic MS one from 2006
Took many unsuccessful tries to download from Nvidia. Computer freeze
Uploaded a generic driver and it worked
Now it only froze after 10 minutes of use if that
Checked other drivers and all were old versions and generic. Upgrade must have wiped the ones I had
Reverted back to Win 7 without an issue (except for getting the correct drivers again, thank you Drive Booster) and now am a happy camper
Will wait a few months before trying again.....

No, I am not a geek like most of you and sometimes have to feel my way around the 0 and 1's

Keep in mind that Telemetry also exists in Windows 7...

The difference with 10 is they are also using it to improve Cortana.

Yes, I'm aware of that but this Win 10 goes so much further..... I know that one can disable most or all of the Privacy in Settings but the fact that it's there makes me very uncomfortable and wouldn't use most of these candies.

Additionally, a poster on another website claimed that he/she turned off Privacy settings in Setttings but that they were changed back to default after having received a Microsoft update. Not sure if the poster clicked on the OK button or whatever is needed after making the changes to the Settings though.

I'd be willing to bet they were an Insider and it was a new build. The poster probably chose express settings, which turns it all on, same as 8.1, 8, and 7.

Truth be told..you are on the Internet, you cannot remain private.

It's a given that that when on the internet, one can cannot remain private and that's fine by me. Win 10 adds a lot of stuff that I don't have and will not have. I think that Windows 10 is not an OS anymore but a mix of almost everything else on the market, i.e. their Phone and many other things that I have forgotten.

Fair enough. Its not going away though.

Even Apple has brought iOS aspects to OS X. The world, not just MS, has been headed in this direction for a while.

I just got notification my copy is ready to install.
But I still don't understand the business model of giving away 100's of thousands or millions of copies of your flagship product.

    What's the catch?

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

FWIW I have now upgraded two machines to Windows 10 - both online installations, and both ASUS Win 7 laptops. The installations were flawless - literally. All I did was click 'yes' a couple of times, drink a beer and sit back and watch. Really like the new system - the only tweak I've done so far is to enable the Home Page button in Edge.

Kudos to Microsoft for doing this right.

No catch other than concerns people have mentioned in this thread. Some are choosing not to update because of those concerns. That's a decision you have to make for yourself. I updated.

I would imagine Microsoft is thinking it's a good business move...and a way to be more secure. They want people to have the most updated version. There are too many Windows OS floating around and people are still running XP even after 14 years. If MS would have done this type of release a long time ago like Apple does, that never would have happened. Obviously, this is not going to benefit those with Vista and anything prior, but they have to keep it realistic and make sure it's stable.

    Agreed.

My only issue is slower boot time, which sort of pisses me off.

My 16 yr. old daughter came down last night and says "Mom, I got the new Windows. I really like it!". I had asked her if she had gotten the update and she didn't know about it. I had no idea she was going to update. A girl after my own heart. :-D

I definitely do not have a slower boot time. Time for an SSD? :p

I had no intention of being an early adopter but when my not mission critical laptop got the download I immediately imaged the system and let the upgrade from 8.1 go ahead. I just wanted to see how the upgrade process worked and had every intention of reverting to 8.1 within the allowed 30 days. The upgrade was problem free and absolutely everything, even Bluetooth, is working perfectly. It also feels as if 10 is optimised for SSD as my laptop has never been this responsive before.

Doesn't look as though I shall be downgrading after all unless problems emerge over the next week or two.

WUDO is taking a ton of bandwidth this morning, anyone else see this on their Win 7 - 8 machines?
I will be forced back to 7 unless AMD drivers get updated for 4K resolution under 10.

    What is WUDO?

Windows Update Delivery Optimization, whatever that means. Probably where they use your computer to deliver updates for 10 to others.
Thanks for the link Eldon. I was typing as you posted.

Just turn WUDO off. See post #52

WUDO is off now and bandwidth use is back to normal.
I hope AMD gets some decent drivers soon. Granted I have a rare system, but it is supposedly supported.
On the good side, my Asus laptop upgraded flawlessly.

I hear that there are horrible issues with the security/privacy settings in Windows 10. Also it seems it takes an expert to know how to turn all of the stuff off so you have some privacy!

Are there any options to Windows 10? I don't want to have to worry about all the things I have to do to "change" the settings. I just hate the intrusion and the data collection etc.

    OK, thanks for your help.

The first time you run 10 do not use express settings, use customise. You then get to choose which settings you want on and which off, but you are right - they are all on by default. I just turned off all those that send data to MS. You don't need any expertise as each item explains what it does.
