By far, I can say I am no computer whiz, but I do know on the other systems (Vista and Seven) I had this same configuration and all memory was recognized as usable. Can anyone tell me why this is happening and if there is something I can do to free up the other 1.5gb? MJG.jpg

That's virtually unreadable. You need to use alt + Prt Sc when taking a screenshot of a single window.

I am looking at task manager now and it tells me that Hardware Reserved 1.5gb. Never seen it like that before.

I would run Speccy to get a better idea

It's your memory that's at fault, not the computer's ;) Several other devices on the motherboard also require memory to be allocated so you can never use all available memory. On this Win 10 laptop I have 3.44GB usable out of 4GB

Sounds more like 'bad' drivers/hardware being allocated most of the 1.5GB, I've had a similar issue which was fixed by a BIOS update but, given the age of the 'board, you'd probably have hit this same 'bug' with W7...

Check Resource Monitor, it may give more details.

Earthling, that's normal on any 32-bit OS.

I hear ya Satrow! Vista never allocated anything to this nature. I did not run 7 long but I do not recall it doing this. The reason for my concern iscfrashing when I run CADD programs. Sometimes I forget to save as often as I should and I lose a lot of work I have done, even though I am using the 3G click.

Yes board is a little outdated and XFX no longer produces them; although, I do haved the latest BIOS but it is 2009 rev. I do not have any red flags in device manager.

Hear is what Speccy looks like.

Windowsit self can some times cause issues like these i have seen that issue as well.I had 8 gigs of ram and it said that i have only 6.5 usable as well.I think it is windows it self causing it.
But still i would recommend on running a Ram check to see if any are comming up as fault.

Step 1: Open the Start Menu and type in mdsched.exe, then press enter.

Step 2. A pop-up will appear on your screen, asking how you'd like to go about checking the memory. The first option will restart your machine and check the memory right now, and the second option checks the next time you choose to reboot. Pick the option that best suits your needs.

Step 3: Your computer will load a screen that shows the progress of the check and number of passes it will run on the memory. Watch the memory diagnostic tool for errors. If there are no errors, then it's likely that your RAM is not causing any issues, and it's time to investigate other hardware or software issues.

And report back to us on any info.

    Yeah, I know, only it isn't 32 bit, it's 64.

Odd, 30-100MB or so would be more usual, have you chased up why so much is used, hardware reserved I guess but by what? Onboard graphics allocation?

I've always assumed it was the onboard graphics but Speccy tells me that's only 384MB out of 560MB unusable. I have both 8.1 and 10 on this laptop and both report 3.44GB usable of 4.00GB. How would you go about finding the rest?

EDIT - just noticed on task manager 575MB hardware reserved

I ran the memory test (mdsched.exe) and no errors found. The graphics driver is up to date.

    Hi

Can you post a screenshot of the Memory tab of the Resource Monitor from Windows as that is good at tell you what is happening to ram, as in some instances ram is used in a temp pre-loaded form, and is listed as used but is not really used and can be freed up to use by the general system if needed, the fact is in Windows and any OS, unused ram is wasted, it really needs to be used to keep a quick PC.

To access Resource Monitor, just type resmon in the search box and hit enter, click the Memory tab.

So that leaves 191MB not accounted for? That's getting better, is there anything you can disable in the BIOS/UEFI? Anything disabled should free up the memory reserved for it and Windows shouldn't load drivers either.

Could you upload/publish the Speccy data to their site and give us the link, please?

Well this has taken an eternity but the only thing I found that worked was a clean install on a formatted drive. I listened and appreciate the input everyone has given. Forums like MajorGeeks.com truly help the novice who has fallen in over their head somewhere down the line, and for this I salute you!
