With Vista bout to meet its doom I am contemplating splashing out on a new laptop. Nothing fancy just a basic, run of the mill laptop. My query is that all new machines now include Windows 10 as their OS and all that I hear about Windows 10 is horror stories. Why is this? what can I do about it? and is there an alternative?

Mostly all new systems come with Windows 10 but you can see that in the details of any on sale - in shop, in print or online.
Some still sell with Windows 8.
Go to a decent system builder like Novatech and you can choose what OS you have.
And most of the whining about Win 10 is exaggerated and mostly on old systems that were updated from Win 7 or 8. If you listened to all horror stories you'd never leave your home. ;)

Thanks for your reply, Max Would I be correct, therefore, in assuming, as you say, that the majority of the problems lie in the systems that get upgraded?

I have just purchased a Wins 10 and am very pleased with it. I found that if you take these things at a slow pace until you get familiar with it you will benefit very well, and i'm not a highly technical person and in my mid 70s. Best of luck.

Cheers! guys. These replies have improved my confidence in Win 10. I suspected that a lot of what I had heard/read must have been a bit exaggerated.

I have run Windows 10 since September (rough estimate) without many hitches or flaws. I do have the issue where I can not use a password to sign in as it will hang at the login screen. That is an issue I am ok with as I don't need or use that. I use a local account instead and login to the Microsoft apps, like Xbox with the account instead. If I ever wanted to fix the problem, Microsoft has already said the only option is to reinstall. Beside that issue, I have liked Windows 10 quite a bit. I have the start menu setup similar to W7 without the advertisements they put there.

Initially, I went the upgrade route when the upgrade to Win 10 was free. I had some issues but, doing a clean install of Win 10 solved them. No problems with Win 10 even on a ca 2008 laptop that originally came with Vista Business.

Always remember that every new OS or even small change will normally be criticised.
I upgraded 3 PCs from W7 and W8.1 and also went to W Edge with no real problems.
I wouldn't do a clean install unless I had no option but it's certainly never got near to that situation.

PS. Of course I had a few moans at the time:(:)
