I came across a rather unusal problem after i was done adding a couple parts to a custom built computer of mine. They are all compitable with the motherboard too.

I load up and it boots fine, the problem I am coming across is restarting. When a program say a update from windows asks me to restart and forces me to restart if i say restart now, windows shuts down like its suppose to the screen turns black the power lights on the tower turn off yet the cpu fan and the other fans along with the hard drive continue to stay on. Surfed a few pages on this particular problem none seemed to give me the answer to solve the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

It shuts down like its suppose to the only problem is restarting where it won't turn off and then reboot itself again

P.S. I put this in Hardware, not sure if its a software issue seemed more hardware

I don't have an answer, but it would probably be worth saying what happens if you try to Restart manually - through Start/Turn off computer/Restart.

windows logs off it seems the monitor goes black and thats it i still hear the cpu fan and hard drive running the computer never shuts down during the restart process.

but for some odd reason if i went through it and chose shut down the computer does what it should do log off windows and shut down the computer

Hi. I think this needs a bit of clarification.

There are two ways to reboot a computer (not counting turning it off and on again):

    1. Forced to restart when a software change, such as a Windows Update, asks you to (as you described in your post).

    2. Manual reboot using Start/Turn off computer/Restart (at least that's what it is in XP)

You seem to be saying that when you do the first of these two, parts of teh computer shut down, but not all, and then it won't reboot.

Or are you saying that when you try either of these two, teh computer partly shuts down, and then won't reboot? You may have answered this in teh second last sentence of your first post, but it's not clear if you're saying it doesn't work for both options, or just the first one, which you described. That was the point of my question in my reply.

I can say at this stage that I don't think it's a problem that the computer doesn't completely shut down - that's normal, as far as I know. Mine keeps running just as you described, but then it reboots. So the only problem you have may be that it won't complete the reboot process.

To understand the extent of the problem, it would be necessary to know if the reboot fails on just the first option I listed above, or both.

It would also be useful to know what hardware you added. One reason for asking is that one might then suggest that you take it out again and see if the problem persists - but that would be a last resort if it's difficult to remove. You could also consider disabling or removing the drivers you added, if any, and see what happens.

I think you could also try a reboot in SafeMode - but I think that would only be useful if number 2 of the above options doesn't work.

Edit: If you try removing the hardware you added, and/or teh drivers, and if the computer reboots as it should, that woudls suggest that the hardware/drivers is the problem. You should then replace the hardware/drivers one at a time and try rebooting after each one. That would help narrow down teh problem, assuming it's caused by teh additions.

If the problem only relates to update-forced reboots (option 1 above), you would need to find something you can do that forces reboots, so you can do the testing. There are a number of actions you can do that force reboots, although I can't think of one off the top of my head, and since you may not need it, it's probably not worth racking my brains over at teh moment.

I am new at this so I am not sure on how it works.

    I have the following problem>

    I use Windows XP Professional.

After a crash I am unable to restart the computer. To be more precise the computer starts to the page where it says that Windows crashed and gives me several option on how to restart, Normal mode, Safe mode etc.

However, no one of them works. Windows starts then come back again and again and again like in a loop.

I tried to boot from the CDROM: no result, I go back to the same page/loop.

I tried to enter in the Bios and change the priority of booting, Again no result.

Does somebody have an idea of what I can do?

PS How do I post a new issue in the forum?

Thank you to whoever answer my message.

    Juli, Welcome to Major Geeks.

I am glad you asked about starting your own thread, because it is bad manners to crash in on someone elses.

    Go here

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21

At the top of the table you will see a button marked "New thread"

Click on this to start your own .

When you post tell us if you know how to run Check Disk as this is what you need to do.

Tell us also if you have a Windows CD, or other means of booting the PC.

    Hi J.

Last question first. To post a new issue (thread) in teh forum, one way (the most basic way) is to go to MajorGeeks.com and on teh right you will see a menu. Click on Support Forums. That takes you to a list of forums. You then choose the one that you think might relate to your problem and click on it. That opens the forum you chose with a list of all the threads. At the top left of that list you will see 'New Thread'. Click on that.

You probably want to start a new thread for your rebooting problem, as it could get lost where you have put it (I guess you already guessed that). If you do, you can copy and paste what you have put in here, and you might add information about anything you have done to the computer before it crashed (added new hardware), or any info you have about why it crashed (electrical storm, harddrive was making funny noises, computer was running unusually slow, etc). How old is the computer?

Also, do you have Service Pack 2 installed for Windows XP? Which CDROM did you try to boot from? I assume it's teh Windows installation CD. I have an idea you need a startup CD (or floppy, if you have a floppy drive) for this (someone will know).

In response to your questions GC

when I go to start shut down the computer will do what it is suppose to do log off windows and shut down the computer.

    HOWEVER

if a program or I go through start restart options the computer will log off windows and everything like it is suppose to once it logs off windows there is a black screen the cpu and hard drive continue to stay on and it never shuts down and then does the automatic reboot, like it was suppose to do.

the only additions I made to this computer was a graphics card.

hope i made a bit more sense there

There are a few things I can think of to try in order to track down the problem.
    1. There's a hint in your first post that the problem started after an update. Try a System Restore to before you installed that update (if that's what you did) and try a restart.
    2. Try removing teh graphics card and uninstalling any driver you added, then try a restart.
    3. Try restarting in SafeMode, just to see if that works (try this first - it's teh easiest).
    4. Try resetting the CMOS, then try a restart.
    5. Remove or disconnect all possible peripherals and try a restart.
    6. Try repairing your OS (what OS is it?) - last last resort would be a reinstall.
    7. Look at your Device Managers and see if there are any yellow or red markings - they indicate problems (question marks and crosses).
    8. Try cleaning up your system using instructions at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407
    9. Check that all your leads are properly plugged in and the insides of teh computer are not too dusty (which could cause overheating).
    10. Try using a different harddrive if you have one.
    11. Try checking your RAM - if you have more than one stick, remove each one and try restarting (as long as you still have enough RAM left to run your system - otherwise, try some other RAM if you can borrow some)
    12. Remove any discs from your floppy, CD or DVD drives.
    13. Check that you didn't dislodge something when you were putting in teh graphics card.
    14. Maybe check teh jumpers on your harddrive(s) and make sure you haven't set any to CS (ok, clutching at straws a bit here).
    15. One or more of your drivers may need updating, but I don't know how to tell, unless there is an indication that one of them is not behaving (see 7.)
    15.5 Run chkdsk
    16. Hit the case very hard on teh side a couple of times - last last last resort.

Can't think of anything else. Maybe one of these will turn up something, or maybe someone else will have an idea.

    I wish you well.

    GC

Edit: OK, just saw it - you have Windows 2000 pro.
Edit2: Have you overclocked your computer at all?
Edit3: wb if you don't know how to do any of the options mentioned.
Edit4: Leave it on restart for say half an hour and see if it starts.

Any progress with your problem yet?

Yes thank you. I was able to solve my problem. This is how.

I went to the BIOS. Deleted all the possible start-up options except the start from CD-ROM. The system now finally started. I has of course to re-install completely Windows and all my other programs which is a pain-in-the-neck but .... Fortunately I do not keep any data in the computer memory.

    Thank you for your Support.
