    First guess:
Try closing any antivirus programs you have running before selecting shutdown.

Another guess is drivers for your hardware (Hint: no hardware list from you). Used some old SB Live! drivers once (Before the unified driver theory came) and they caused my Win2k to take forever to shutdown.

I use AVG free virus, always shut it down, along with other apps ,before shuting down PC, this is a recent bug,as have lates Service paks, its a VIA mobo
Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 4 (build 2195)
    VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C597
    Processor a Main Circuit Board
    450 megahertz AMD K6-2 w/3DNow!

The motherboard-type you gave is just a chip no. (For a VIA system controller), don't you have the actually motherboad manufacture(Asus, Abit, Soltek, MSI, etc.) and model no. ?

Is everything onboard the motherboard (sound card, display adapter, network card, modem, etc. ?) or is it addon PCI cards. If so who made them and what models ?

How much RAM do you have in the machine ? (Also check that you by accident haven't turned on clear pagefile on shutdown, as it can take a while)

how do you turn on clear pagefile on shutdown??

its a VIA mobo, video etc all in one

after I went to System, select the Advanced Tab then select Startup and Recovery, uncheck Automatically reboot,it screwed up even more

had to revert drive-with GOBAck, as it stalled at blue screen, had to force reboot, then it locked, was very slow

It is very difficult to access the Azza website for support (Have a feeling that they exists no more). Only found this half broken website who had details:

http://www.azzaboard.com/pt5vmd.html (Doesn't say anything about onboard devices besides IDE)
http://www.azzaboard.com/download.html (But no working links for bios download)

To check whether swap file is set to be cleared at shutdown:

    http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/244/

    I have the following recommendations:
    1. Reinstall the Via4in1 driver (And every other driver that matches your hardware)
    http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300
    2. If the above fails, then do a repair install of Win2k
    3. If the above fails, then do a clean install.

What is importance of swap file is set to be cleared at shutdown:?

I checked registry, there are no values, all 0’s,so I assume swap file is NOT cleared?

Does this have something do with defragmentation? I use “Diskeeper” a lot?

Well it is not something for the ordinary user. It is because after shutting down the machine and leaving it, then the swap file will contain some of the stuff you had in memory. This means another person who access to the machine (And has some good skills) can extract information of what you were doing, what you were writting, what your passwords are etc.

This is situation is highly unlikely for the average user, but for some reason several recommend clearing the swap file at shutdown. (Thought you might had been lured into following such recommendation)
