Windows 7 Color Calibration Resets When I Start Game

    Hi, Major Geeks

I have searched extensively for an answer to this problem, and found several, yet none of them seem to work, so I realized it's time to come here and get some real help.

The problem is, every time I start a game, my color recalibrates itself, raising the gamma too high and I have to manually go in and reset it, again, and again.

I am using Windows 7 Premium.
    My video card is a PowerColor AX5770-1GBD5-H Radeon HD5770 1GB GDDR5(V3)

The game I am running is Lord of the Rings Online aka LOTRO, at very high resolution.

I hope you can help me, this is driving me nuts!

    Thanks, Garrett

Where are you calibrating your monitor? If you are using CCC try setting CCC to default and calibrating with the monitor settings. That should not change no matter what program you use.

    Thanks for replying, DOA!

I have been calibrating with Windows Display in the Control Panel. I will try using CCC, which I assume stands for AMD Catalyst Control Center, and report back.

I turned on the game and the gamma faded as it always does. I reset it with CCC, which looked great. But, when I restarted the game a second time, it reset the gamma again. I then turned off Windows color calibration as the default in the Control Panel, and started the game again- same thing happened, the gamma reset to too high.

I am now trying to figure out how to set CC to default... OK, I am stumped, searches aren't helping. Please, how do I set CCC as default?

Open CCC, choose Video on left bar, choose color on Video drop down, button in lower left says "defaults".
Does your monitor (when the computer is off) have a color calibration menu? Use the monitor native if at all possible.

I have adjusted with the monitor controls before and it had no effect on the problem. I hadn't tried it with the computer off, and just did- the color controls were grayed out and couldn't be adjusted. It's a Samsung.

I just followed the instructions you gave and when I pressed 'defaults' the screen jumped back to the too high gamma setting right then, and all the controls were grayed out. I then noticed that CCC was set to "Use Video Player Settings". I selected "Use AMD Settings" instead and the controls lit up. I made adjustments there, and while I could see them on their test photo, the monitor didn't change at all.

I should note that whenever I press 'defaults' it switches from "Use AMD Settings" back to "Use Video Player Settings".

Feeling the need to continue the fight, I tried using CCC's 'Desktop Management' menu, 'Desktop Color'. First I hit 'defaults' and the gamma went even higher, making it hard to see the images at all! So I hit 'Reactivate AMD color controls' and adjusted to where I wanted it, then, hit 'apply'. Then, thinking this might make my current setting the default I hit 'defaults' again- oops. Now the controls are grayed out and I can make no adjustments. I am just stumped.

Update: It turns out the 'Desktop Management', 'Desktop Color' controls still worked, so I set them to look good and hit 'apply', I started the game and... the gamma reset again.

Sorry to be a bother, can you think of anything else I can try? I want to get in control of this thing! :)

    Thanks, Garrett

    What model Samsung?
My Samsung adjusts and holds gamma just fine. I have it set to 75% as I sit in a fairly poorly lit room.

Hi DOA, thanks again, and sorry for the delay in response, holiday madness.

My Samsung model is S20A300B -I have no idea why its controls don't hold. No matter what I have done so far, every time the game (LOTRO) starts, the gamma shifts up to a lighter range.

My current kludge is I just leave CCC on and press 'Reactivate AMD Color Controls' whenever I play the game.

Lord of the Rings Online has its own, internal settings for brightness, contrast, and gamma so it is replacing your Windows settings each time you play: http://lotro.wikia.com/wiki/Video_And_Performance_Tweak_Guide
You'll probably have to jockey back and forth to get them to match each other; but, that's your answer. Set the game AND Windows to match each other.
