A friend of mine who owns the computer store where i source all my parts and today i visited him for some stock, while we were having a cup of coffee i mentioned that someone i knew wanted a new laptop but with windows 7 and not 8,he told me he could supply one but it would cost 20% more than the same laptop with windows 8.
His supplier told him that demand was so high for PCs with windows 7 that the prices had skyrocketed mainly due to the makers refusing to load 7 in the factory.
I wonder could this be a bit of coercion from MS in order to force windows 8 on us all?

It has always been like that.

When Vista came out, you could no longer get factory installed XP, with few exceptions (Dell, some other business user oriented retailers).

When 7 came out, Vista too went away.

So while yeah, it is because MS doesn't want two versions floating around in retail channels, it is nothing new with Windows 8.

Retailers charging 20% more would be because they want to be paid for their extra work.

Essentially Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are no longer allowed to install Windows 7 on anything they sell (with few exceptions). It's not exactly coercion from Microsoft, rather a withdrawal of Windows 7 from the large corporations to both make life easier re versions of OSes on laptops, and for support reasons, as Adrynalyne said.

I am so happy that I bought my wife's Dell PC last August just prior to the launch of Win 8. She is very happy with Win 7. I am very happy to run Linux and the BSDs. :)

I had it on a PC when it was first released for testing and ran it for about 3 months but personally did not like it because i felt it was made for tablets and phones,i found it too much work to do basic things that i was used to in windows 7.

Microsoft have taken on board the gripes and complaints and are releasing windows 8 Blue later this year but not a lot is known as yet what changes have been made or even if it will be a free update??

If they are smart, it will be free.

They haven't made a lot of smart loves lately though, so who knows.

I imagine the production line has to stop and one of the workers has to hit 'A-hole want's windows 7' button.

So they charge you for it.:-D

From what I know, BLUE is free. What little sources I have.
