can someone tell me why windows 7 cannot allow me to manage startup programs in any way that bypasses selective startup? in other words everything I try is always a choice between normal or selective. even CCleaner goes selective so it is turned into selective on my system. i was advised not to use selective and in vista there was a place called system services that could be blocked but on windows 7 its only - services - and now the programs I want to block DONT EVEN SHOW UP ON THE LIST. ( brother printer / openoffice writer etc. ) unless I have missed something. can someone please tell me once and for all if selective startup is acceptible and if not point me in the right direction for blocking some startup programs....

my alternative is to download some free app off the web and hope it doesnt mess up my system but i've gone down that road before and really dont want to do any unnecessary downloading.

i believe ccleaner will not do selective if you remove an item, only if you disable it. So i would suggest disabling an item first if you're not sure what it does, then when you are satisfied it works fine, you can use ccleaner to remove it from the list.

If starupcpl works on 7, that does not use msconfig keys. I've had difficulty with this program on Vista.

Else I use startup manager 2.4.2 and under the system settings in this program I change to store disabled items in startup manager key.

I'm hoping this is right as I once entered into a very technical discussion, (by very technical I mean I didn't have a clue), with one of the expert malware fighters. Those people really know their s***!

Actually yes you have it right to a degree, StartupCPL does work in Windows 7 but its the standalone version and not the installer version that I have found that works, CCleaner still uses Msconfig to control startups, did get errors in the installer version on Windows 7 when I last tested it.

I use the Standalone version HERE on Windows 7 64bit and 32bit PCs for users that ask fo rsome managment, personally I'm the delete with ccleaner if you are going to disable it as if deleting you dont need it anyways, can always re-install if an issue arrises.

But also make sure if an app like Apple iTunes if you disable any of its startups, on an update it will add them back so need to disable again, similar for Adobe and Sun Java,

To also follow on in this, you can also if you have a slowish startup force the services of many applications to a delayed start so if you notice that many apps are starting at once, TBH you only really want your AntiVirus and Firewall starting first, so you can delay the likes of Windows Live Sign in manager for Win Messenger etc, your defrag app if not built in Windows one the one below is my O&O Pro delayed startup as this can help speed up your boot as not all apps are trying to fight for CPU or HDD I/O time.

As O&O defrag doesnt really need to start quickly it can wait, like many other no essential apps.

Startup Delayer is good app also for other OSes for this HERE

lots of great info here, so the general idea is get a software program to manage the startup and stay away from msconfig, everyone is essentially saying DO NOT GO SELECTIVE STARTUP ROUTE. correct? I know in the malware section of this website there is a read me first part about only using normal startup...that is the rule then for safe computer use? big problems or just problems when using selective startup?

    Hi

Yes steer clear of selective startup as its a troubleshooting tool in reality and not a startup manager, can cause issue later on. Even mentioned this in the KB on msconfig HERE
This is due to the issues when startup managed apps are uninstalled and definatly if dealing with malware you dont want anything managed as malware can be missed.

StartupCPL is the best IMHO to deal with startups, bar my radical delete option, as if I was to disable a startup I delete as I know I didnt want it, some are for many users safe to disable that delete just depends what you have in startup.

I downloaded the startupCPL and it only found msnmsgr and my openoffice writer. but there was a HKLM area where the others are, can I uncheck those or are they registry values to be left alone ? ( says something to do with registry ).

if it's the HKLM/Software/Microsoft/CurrentVersion/Run part of the registry, that is a common place for start up programs to be. you don't want to get rid of all of them.

I meant just uncheck the stuff that really shouldnt be there like brother printer drivers / open office writer / msnmsgr / spybot etc...

You can check/tick and uncheck/untick anything in Startup Control Panel. If you decide you made a mistake, it is easy to correct.

Another program to control startups and a bit more is WinPatrol.

I currently use both Startup Control Panel and WinPatrol.

If you don't wish your printer driver to load, then uninstall the printer.

    Well you said the brother driver keeps loading;
of course it does because the print spooler is one of windows services. You can keep unchecking/unticking it if you care to waste time. The only way to stop it from loading at startup is to remove the printer.

I was advised not to change from normal startup mode to selective ( that being what I understand is removing the printer from startup - beyond that no I dont WANT to remove the print spooler or said function) because the whole point of this thread is to find an alternative to that. I cannot get an answer it seems, because either I frame the question wrong or no one seems to know how to advise me on utilizing the services area of my computer to block the printer driver and openoffice writer from being started at startup. on XP and vista I could do this but not for some reason on windows 7, the services I speak of are not even on the list of the services! so please tell me HOW DO I BLOCK THESE PROGRAMS FROM STARTING in the first place so they dont take up so much juice without removing them! I could " BLOCK " brother printer drivers and other unnecessary programs without having to remove them in any way with previous OS systems...whats going on with windows 7?

blocking the software that is bundled with a printer driver is ok (i don't know what brother's is). you should still be able to use the printer. like i said earlier, you can use ccleaner to either delete or disable an entry from startup. If you choose to delete the entry, it will not change to selective startup, only if you choose to disable will it change to selective. Since you are not sure what entries are which, i would suggest disabling one at a time (it will put you at selective startup) and when you are sure the disabled item isn't needed, you can delete it, and you should return to normal. remember that some items will return even after you delete it, if you choose to run the program associated with it. (i.e. itunes helper, quicktime starter, etc)
