We just upgraded our Acer Aspire 5100 from Windows Vista to Windows 7. It works beautifully except the directional/scroll button of the touchpad no longer works. The touch pad itself works fine.

According to the Acer Web site, this laptop can't be upgraded to Windows 7. They obviously don't account for the fact that some people make their own hardware upgrades within the laptop, like memory and hard drive size. But as a result, they don't make a Windows 7 version of the synaptics pointing device driver.

The lack of the scroll button is a minor annoyance but does anyone have suggestions that might help?

    Hi

I was hoping looking over the driver lists for XP and Vista for that Notebook that it would mention the toucpad driver say "Synaptics" but sadly doesnt, you may well be out of luck if the toucpad driver is a built in one from ACER, so its actually listed as Synaptics?

If so then try the correct ones for your install of Windows 7 HERE (saying corect ones as I dont know if you using 32bit or 64bit Win7)

*on the fact that you may not have updates, well that sadly is a fact of technology, its not like you'll get a 486 PC running Windows 7, tech moves fast and past a year or so most becomes old and if its past a cut off point then many a time drivers are not supplied from the OEMs liek ACER, HP, DELL etc for hardware, ram and HDDs are not governed by these restrictions as the drivers are mostly built into Windows, its the items like Audio, Touchpads etc that are.

Hey Guys! Just Googling this subject matter to see how I can help as i have done this.

LOLOL OH YES YOU CAN, ACER, upgrade it to Windows 7... It might not be supported, but it works! I am running it RIGHT now on my 5100 with everything working! You will have to upgrade from Vista, not clean install, for this. All the Acer utilites and drivers work from the upgrade DVD or from the following site:

    http://support.acer.com/drivers_download.aspx

This site lets you pick your make and model # then proceed to the driver selections. The reason all this works is because the guts of 7 are similar to Vista. So the VISTA Synaptics utility for the scroll pad works with the icon in the taskbar. I upgrade from the free VISTA Home Premium to 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I had to reinstall a few things afterwards but they all work!! :)

Well, if you cannot find the drivers, i can email them to you straigt off the Acer Utility Upgrade DVD. If you want to talk to me further, my email is cmccarternx01@hotmail.com. Use that to contact me on MSN Messenger as well. Just let me know who you are. The card reader, which is ENE, is on there as well. You have to use the acer stuffs. :) Below is a screenie containing my desktop with the acer stuff still there and the Synaptics icon in the tray.
