Hi, I'm hoping someone can lead me in the right direction here. I have Gateway LX6810-01 that has Intel 2 quad CPU 2.33 ghz 234 ghz processor, with 8 gigs of ram on it. I bought it loaded with Vista 64 bit opperating system, and I want to go to Windows 7 64 bit. I went to Microsofts site to learn how to do a clean install. It said just put the Windows 7 disk in and do a custom install. Ok, did that, then tried to get rid of the windows old file, but it will not delete. Also, I still have left over files in C drive that shouldn't be there, they are from Vista. How the heck can I get a CLEAN install of Windows 7??? Can I boot from my CD and format like that and install??? Your help and info is appreciated!! Thanks.

Hmm, did you boot off the DVD or started the process in Vista as that would account for the the old files remaining. Reboot and get into your BIOS, tapping F8 works for me but I don't know your machine, and get to 'Boot Order' or similar heading and change it to your DVD to be your first boot drive.

You will then get drive options and delete what's currently there on your hard drive. Just to get things going for now, you can leave it as one drive and shrink later if you wish.

Yes Augie, I did intsall while in Vista, dumb huh?? Still learning this new computer, and I have a TON of devices that I have no idea what they are, but did finally find the DVD drive in Bios, and thought that's what I needed to do, but wanted a confirmation. Thank you so much!!

    Hi

If you have all your important files backed up then a clean install is best, and these instructions are easy to follow and as they have pictures is much easier than following my typed instructions.

If you dont have all your saved Docs and Settings saved then you could use the Easy Transfer Wizard and backup these and then when Windows 7 is re-isntalled recover the backup (works with Win7 to Win7 transfers too)

or just manually backup your important docs etc

Edit: slow typing! glad you have it sorted now.

No, not dumb at all YooperLady!;) Not everyone installs a new OS on a regular basis like I do.:-o:-D You are very welcome! Hello to W7 and I know you will love it after you get your bearings as it is a tad different than Vista in layout. Enjoy!:wine

EDIT: Good info for others Halo even if you are a tad late.:)
