    Dear all

I am sorry to trouble you with this but I am really at the end of my tether. Windows 7 will just not work properly on my computer. I am sorry if the problems in this thread may have been covered on other threads but there are various ones and I don't know formal titles.

It all started in June when I was trying to reinstall iTunes. I got a message saying that it's side by side configuration was incorrect. This has happened with scores of programmes, such as Windows Live Messenger. I decided to use Windows Troubleshooter and I couldn't. I got the following error information:

    PackageID: MaintenanceDiagnostic
    Path: C:\windows\diagnostics\scheduled\Maintenance
    Error Code: 0x800736B1
    Source: Engine
    User: LynseyLaptop\Lynsey
    Context: Elevated

Unfortunately, I don't have the Windows 7 Installation Disc to help me out here, as it became preinstalled on my Samsung R530. I can't even perform a system recovery. Someone said my hard drive partitions might be messed up?

Any help you could get me would be gratefully received, cos I really don't have a clue what I am doing.

    Best,

    Lynsey

What type of "system recovery" is it that you "can't even perform"? Is it a System Restore, a standard feature of Windows 7, to some date before the problems occurred? or is it a System Recovery to original installation from a recovery partition?

What error messages are you seeing in the Windows Event log that may relate to the reinstall of iTunes and the other scores of programmes and the "side by side" error messages? Is there an event from which the failures stem from, e.g., a Windows Update, Device Driver update, etc.?

Do you know if any of the Windows 7 updates have failed to install?

I can't perform a System Restore, it says that there are no restore points and wont allow me to create any. I also can't use System Recovery to do the original installation.

I don't know what you mean by Windows Event Log.

Yes, Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242) wont upgrade.

    Thanks for helping.

Ah hold on. I think I know what you are talking about now re. event logs. When I get into the Event Viewer I get the message 'MMC could not create the snap-in'

Samsung provide Recovery Solution software (see http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/d...530 15.6" Essential Notebook | NP-R530-JA02UK) along with numerous other software and support. You may need to select the correct country appropriate for your software and you may need to register your product. Was this the system recovery that you used?

The glimpses of the information that you provided suggests that a Windows component wasn't installed or configured correctly and maybe various Windows check/repair tools could help.

However, make a backup before trying the Samsung software and solutions first (for the recovery direction) or Windows based solutions (for the repair direction).

I was using the Samsung Recovery Solutions before but this may be an updated version. I will definitely give your ideas a try...anything is worth a try.

    Thanks so much xxx
