    Hi Guys,

I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate edition on my computer, took a fair while to install, but I have no sound, and I`m new to the vista/windows 7 look, it's nothing like XP that I was used to, with the following hardware, which drivers should I install on a clean Windows 7 Ultimate install?

    Asus P5ND2 SLI Deluxe Mainboard
    P4 3.6GHz CPU
    HIS Radeon 3850 PCIe Videocard
    160GB ATA HDD (2 Partitions)
The Sound is Onboard AC97 (I Think...)

    Cheers,

    David

I like the Windows 7 Layout, seems very Vista Like, except I only ever saw vista once for all of 5 minutes, so it is all new to me, I can't seem to work out what and how to change certain things. like the active icons section being hidden if more than 3, my utorrent and ATI CCC is under the up arrow, have to click that to show them, dunno how to get it to display them all.

I like the clear-ish see through theme that windows has going on!

Any tips from other Windows 7 users on a fresh install? I have downloaded all available updates using Windows Update, just trying to configure everything else now to display correctly, run the way I am used to, you have to go here and there, unlike XP, which the Windows Key and E came in handy for.

I also notice that Outlook is gone!!! Darn it! I used Outlook a lot, for its ease of use, and quick opening!!! I can't seem to find any e-mail client in windows 7 ultimate for that matter, what has happened there??? It was in 98/98SE/XP/XP PRO/VISTA... Doesn't microsoft include it anymore??

It want's me to find and install a virus checker, it keeps popping up a notification for it, I am used to using Avast Home Edition, but I don't think they have a Windows 7 version of the program, are their any other free virus checkers that are Windows 7 compatible, and don't hog your system down like Nortons for instance, couldn't go through all that again!

    Cheers in advance,

    Dave

I must say, I`m hooked on the Chess game that comes with Windows 7, little fancy for a windows game too! doesn't seem to pull any punches either, very competitive, haven't won yet, still trying! hehe

    Windows 7 Compatible Apps?

Does anyone know where their is a listing of sorts for most applications and if they are or are not compatible for winodws 7? As I use a lot of diffirent programs, for diffirent things, ie: FlashGET to resume downloads, uTorrent for torrent downloads, Nero for Burning, Outlook Express for E-mail, etc etc

I also notice that the Ultimate version of Windows 7 does not include any e-mail client what so ever! which is a shame as I have always utilised Outlook Express for my private E-mail client! So I don't know what other 'Free' e-mail client that I can use, as I have never used any other client before, and seeing as Windows 7 is new, I also have to worry about it being compatible!

Any listing and comments by other Windows 7 users would be greatly appreciated! I personally need to find out about the following,

E_Mail Client - Something like Outlook Express would be nice, and free
Virus Scanner - Used to always use Avast Home, but don't know if it is Win7 ready, site has no leads!
Burning Tools - Been an avid Nero user, But don't feel like forking out for a windows 7 compatible version!

    Kind Regards,

    Dave

    Re: Windows 7 Compatible Apps?

havent had much of a problem getting just about all my software to work in win7 64-bit.
I use avast av, ms office 2002, all of the software listed in the read/run me for removing malware works, all my games from at least the last 5 years, i use Ashampoo's free software for cd/dvd burning keep in mind it's version 6, and there's a newer one, but it's not completely free, but it still works in win 7. The only software that is a little quirky is musicmatch jukebox, which hasn't been updated for a few years (the company is no longer around) but it works with compatibility mode and a little tweaking. utorrent works and i think you can get windows live mail which isn't installed with win7 but is available to download for free.

Avast home is compatible with Win7! I've been using it.
BT has posted in your other thread, check the link given by her!

Right - Avast is compatible with 32 or 64bit versions of Win7.

I'm guessing you mean Outlook Express rather than Outlook. Anyway, M$ would like you to use Windows Live Mail, and I can't see any reason not to myself. It's a very capable client with a calendar and an excellent spam filter. If that doesn't appeal then Mozilla Thunderbird is a superb alternative. Both are far superior to good ol' Outlook Express.

The other alternative is to install Microsoft Office which has Microsoft Office Outlook on there which you can use.

    Hi

You will find that most current applications work in Windows 7, if they worked in Vista then its likely they will work ok in Windows 7 and be that 32bit or 64bit makes no real different as 64bit Windows 7 has two program files folders one for native 64bit apps and one for legacy 32bit ones.

Avast, CCleaner, Windows Live Mail, Firefox, Open Office, AVG, Spywareblaster, Flash get, uTorrent, Azurus etc etc list goes on are all fine, as for buring app CDBurnerXP is good and works, Jdownloader is good as an alternative to Flashget.

Where I'm trying to go is that dont worry too much with a new OS being out that there are a limited number of apps that work with it, its not the same ones will work and only very old apps may have issues but there are always alternatives.

As for your driver question on what to install, well that would depend on what ones are missing? chceck device manager for yellow ! marks to find out whats missing if any, I would though install the latest graphic driver for your card as the default one is ok but lacks options.

Drivers Missing are SMBus, it has a big fat ! on it..

Last night I left my comp on for the fiancee to use, she is getting so wrapped up in the Twilight books it just aint funny, anyway, she woke me up saying the comps on but the screen wont work, I got up all dazed and medication wasted out, all I could do was a hard reset, which fixed the problem, I think that has something to do with Hibernation or Sleep mode within Windows 7, becuase I left my comp on while I got tea for the kids and fiancee, jumped back on it now and the screen wasn't on, had to hit a keyboard key to get it going, mouse wasn't on either, is that a hibernation problem? this time though I didn't have to hard reset...
