Windows 7 on Gateway Computer

I have some kind of a problem I don't understand:
My system is Windows 7 installed by the factory. When I first got and booted up the computer and did the necessary stuff, everything ran smoothly and quickly, bootup included.

THe problem now is that the system is constantly lighting the hard drive lite for long periods, System Essentials indicates that the CPU is not overloaded, drive access is minimal, other processes running normally, but when the hard drive light is on steady (sometimes 5-7 minutes), all seems well on the computer stuff, but everything I do is in a hang up state until the drive light goes back to flickering. Can't do anything with it on, not typing, nothing.

THere isn't any logic to what I am seeing happening. I have run CCleaner, Iobit System Care, and several others in an attempt to fix what the problem seems to be doing to no avail. Does anyone have a clue as to how to fix this? I have even gone back to the factory install with its defaults and get the same thing. :cry

Couple of quick questions for info: what's the model # of your machine? And, do the symptoms present while in Safe Mode?

 

Model DX4822
Pentium Dual Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60 GHz, installed ram 6.00 GB, 64 bit OS, Windows 7 Home Premium OS.

Everything is slow, even the startup from booting before I get to the Safemode. That is slower now than before as well.

 

I see this PC quoted as coming with a 1TB 5,400 rpm HDD - not good, 7,200 should be standard these days, 5,400's are fine for backup or external use. Another anomaly, 4 RAM slots and they've fitted 3x2GB sticks, makes me wonder why ...

What security software are you using?
