Windows 7 password

Okay, so I have a Lenovo x200 tablet PC. Some years ago, it used to be connected to my work network which no longer exits. I hadn't really noticed any problems until I tried to boot in into Safe Mode and also recently discovered that I can't access in some ways c:\. So I always log in using my fingerprint but I have discovered that no password seems to work. My password hint agrees with what I think the password is but it doesn't work. For the C:\ directory, a new directory can be created but some directories can't be opened and a new file can't be copied to or created in c:\. All of which I can live with if nothing bad happens but I would like to fix it. I also want to load Windows 8 for development and testing work but don't know if that will solve anything (except as a new install) and I might loose access to something like the fingerprint reader.

So my question is, how can I fix this overall issue and particularly having a password that works? Yes I am logged in as me at the moment but it wants my password to change passwords. I'm not sure if I use a crack program if that will even work and which is the one to use?

I remembered this thread and am not sure what exactly worked.

Nick_T's microsoft link has a couple of suggestions for changing the Administrator password but they will likely ask for your password so they may not work.

You could also try my suggestion in post #9 of enabling the built in Administrator account, then remove your password as described in post #8 and see if that will work. Or try creating the new user and remove the password on your username from that new account.

I don't see how UAC fits in. If you still have problems maybe respond to that thread and see if JimLL can remember exactly what he did.
