I'm just wanting good suggestions on what are the best security settings for Windows 7. Right now I'm unable to click on links and make them open. I'm also having issues with Windows Live Messenger! I want to disable it on start up but it won't let me log in to do so!

    Windows 7 Ultimate (build 7600)

    Hi

What Browser are you using in Windows 7, if IE8 and you cannot click on links, try first of all to reset IE, goto Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab adn click Reset at bottom, then close IE and run CCLeaner and its Cleaner and Registry cleaner.

Also if the above doesnt work, disable your antivirus and firewall to test they are not blockingthe internet links, also what are all the security apps you have installed on your PC?

AS for Windows Live Messenger, you should not need to login to change the startup settings, just run WLMess and click Tools > Options and Sign in menu and then untick Automatically Run.... and Automatically Sigin... options, then with CCleaner click Tools > Startup and delete the Windows Live Messenger listing and reboot and see if it doesnt start now (dont use msconfig to manage this startup as it can cause issues and duplicates if you uninstall or update WLMess)

Also if you run Windows Live Mail, then enter its Tools > Options menu and General tab and untick Automatically log onto Windows Live Messenger.

It appears I'm using IE 8. The issue is I'm unable to log into Windows Live Messenger, I'm getting message that I can not log in. I'm getting error 80040154 and I have searched the Net and all solutions I have found so far do not work. I am running for malware and virus two of the free pic's from this site. SUPERAntiSpyware and PC Tools AntiVirus Free Edition. I just want to figure out how to log into Windows ML and disable it.

If the above doesn't do it, try IE8 with no add-ons.

    Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

And does your present IE have the Smart Screen Filter turned on? This by itself, I believe, may block web-sites. I don't know this for certain, but I find the leaner I run IE8, the better it runs.

I did the No Add-ons, Smart Screen Filter was uncheck.

And did Halo's or my suggestions work?

Only referring to clicking on links, I know nothing about Live Messenger, I don't use that or any other similar programs.

    Hi

I gave you that info as you dont need to login to WLMess as the Tools > Options menu is available without the need to login as I tested it before posting again with my WLMess and Windows 7 x64 install, been using both since release dates.

If any of the suggestions worked or not please let us know one way of the other and if they dont then what where the errors or at least the steps you took to get to the null working app.
