I recently read a "review" online where they tested SP1 for Win7 for performance gains (or losses) when gaming, and they also tested for overal system stability (the article is here). However, upon looking for SP1 for Win7, the only "official" release I could find from Microsoft is the Release Candidate (RC1) that came out Oct 2010 (available here). A little more research told me (somewhat ambiguously) that SP1 is due out "Q1 2011". So, does anyone know when SP1 for Win7 is going to be released to the public? I also read somewhere that Microsoft had an RTM (Release To Manufacturers) version, but I guess that only folks like Dell, HP, Acer, etc have easy access. I have seen some "leaked" SP1 downloads available thru various somewhat shady outlets (ie; torrents, P2P, fileshare, etc) but I avoid those like the plague, which they may actually be: PC plague (meaning "virus").

Any info about the actual release date of SP1 for Win7 will be appreciated. Or any general info about SP1 in general.... Thanks! ;)

    Hi dlb

I'd take all benchmarks with a pinch or a lump of salt, as no two are ever going to be the same, the test fugures in that gaming one are so close you'd never see any difference in performance anyways in a game or real world applications. Its the stability and real world performance you want from the OS, and Microsoft will more attempt to build on the siucess of Win7 over adding something new and experimental to break whats working and getting good review so far.

Yep the only version for public is the RC1 and its not even mentioned in that test what version Windows 7 SP1 they are using (unless I had blinked), but that said on the two PCs I have a version of Win7 x64 SP1 on its working fine, and it was always a stability build over adding any great performance updates, if you want performance buy a better CPU, more ram and a higher end GPU ;)

For one I have not yet had to feedback any bugs with SP1 builds at all, which is rare, I know others on the test program that have not filled any bugs also. What I would say is download the RTM SP1 from Microsoft in full when its available and not from WU or a definatly off a unknown torrent. The full version download while large-ish in size does tend to give a more smoother install, I would also disable AV and security apps also.

OEMs will have it now and have done so since 14th/15th Jan 2011 as they need to gear up for the installs on pre-build PCs, which is why there is the likelyhood that some sites may have builds that leak from OEM sources.

As for the masses I wouldnt be suprised if we see a double release of Windows 7 SP1 and IE9 in mid February early March at latest as the last round of Windows Updates in Jan added KB976902 so I wouldnt be suprised if we see one last Patch Tuesday pass to get more users onto this update.

Some info for you HERE dlb but as I mentioned dont expect anything new or earth shattering to come out, as going on the new timeframes for Windows releases, anything earth shattering would be in Windows.next.

Is that KB976902 the same as the "Black Hole" one that everyone was scared of with vista because there was vague info when released? Which turned out to a system readiness for SP1? I would welcome a little stability in Se7en, I did blue screen once and a few times it has just plain rebooted. Then again, I like to push the boundaries with killing services, processes, etc to see how far I can tweak things. Oh well, being back to normal is only a image away.

I have had no problems with my Win7 x64 Home Premium. NOT A SINGLE PROBLEM since day one - no lag, no BSOD, no malware (which has very little to do with the OS), no compatibility problems with older games or apps, no problems, PERIOD. I couldn't be happier with Win7. I am going to be a bit leary of SP1 when it comes out.... I don't want to compromise my currently "perfectly stable" OS.

(I probably just jinxed myself LOL )

I am also totally happy with Win7, I have a image of a fresh install set up how I like with all normal programs installed, etc. Then I start playing... you know playing tends to get.

LOL I'm running 6gb RAM, quad core 3.2ghz, Nvidia GTX570 video, 20m broadband internet . . . I'm not really looking for a performance increase (my PC freekin' SMOKES as it is), but of course a free increase is always nice, even if it's slight. My main concern is stability, or, more accurately, a lack of stability and/or lack of performance. I don't want my fast stable PC to be negatively affected in any way, however slight it may be. No change would be perfect, and an increase in performance would be awesome, but it's not expected nor am I looking for a performance increase, and a stability "increase" doesn't make sense 'cuz my PC is perfectly stable now, so it's impossible to make it "more stable".
I looked at KB976902... what's the deal? Is this some kind of big important update? The description doesn't make it sound like anything special.....
