I have a netbook that came with windows 7 starter , hard drive went out and now i need to re install windows 7 starter.

I have found the creation tools from microsoft website for windows 8 and windows 10 but cannot find one for windows 7 ( starter specifically)

can someone assist as to where i would be able to get it or better yet where to get the direct iso if possible

There's a mirror site that you can currently download the ISOs directly from. I don't know how much longer it's going to remain open to the public though. Read the info at the top of the page.

Note: these are Torrent downloads and not HTTP downloads. I got my Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise ISOs from this site.

thank you this is where i got an iso before but the original website seemed to be taken down

Even though i could find the iso in various other places i didn't want to download it elsewhere because sometimes some people add things to the iso.

The microsoft download didn't work because i got an error and of course we all know how helpful most manufacturers are with providing cd's or recovery media when its not on their website.

Has windows 10 gotten better ? I was thinking of upgrading a netbook with the free windows 10 option because starter seems a bit more limited to me. The only thing i was annoyed before when i tried windows 10 on another desktop was the fact that i wasn't able to turn off automatic updates so every time i would turn off the computer it would download and install a lot of gibberish

The author put the site back up but like I stated in my last post, I don't know for how long. I had a problem with the Win 7 ISOs I downloaded from the site today with qBittorrent. Normally, I can open ISOs in Windows/File Explorer and take a look at things. Today I got "Could not mount image." and I don't know why.

What error did you get with the Microsoft download? Was it the OEM Key error?

Windows 10 is fine as long as you do a clean install. Many, including myself, had problems going the update route and ended up doing clean installs. If you do go the update route, because you're running Win 7 starter, you'll get Win 10 core. However, if you can get on a PC that's already running Win 10, you can use the Media Creation Tool to create an ISO or USB which you can use to do a clean install.

The lack of control over Windows Update is one thing that initially annoyed me about Win 10. But, I've gotten used to it. Most of the time the only thing that downloads and installs is a definition update for Windows Defender.

Netbooks that came with Windows 7 Starter had restrictions on the amount of RAM that could be installed.
Check the maximum amount of RAM that your netbook can use. If it is 2GB then I suspect you will not be happy with Windows 10.

My netbook, limited to 2GB of RAM, and with a minute 4GB ssd came with linux. Linux worked well on it but I'm not able to install a newer distro because of the limited hd size. I run linux from a USB stick to browse safely but still use the installed linux, off the internet, to read books and watch movies.

How large is the hard drive in your netbook?

the netbook i have came with 1gb ddr3, however i just upgraded both the hard drive and memory ( 2gb max) and the hard drive i put inside is a 240 gb ssd ( hard drive and memory were underneath the keyboard so i had to take apart 70% of the laptop and luckily i did not damage anything) .

So i suppose in this case i will just to a clean windows 10 install instead of upgrading from within the windows 7 starter version
One question i have is : I downloaded the microsoft windows 10 creation tool i get 3 choices for an operating system to install in a usb:
    Windows 10
Windows 10 home with single language
    windows 10 N

Can i pick any ? Or is there a specific one that would only be valid with my windows 7 starter key?

my processor is 64 bit capable however i can only add a 2 gb stick as a maximum i don't suppose i would benefit much or at all from installing a 64 bit system? In terms of speed both would probably be the same ?

Windows 10 Home is what you are allowed with a Win 7 Starter key. The 'N' version of Home has less media applications included - scroll to the bottom for the 'N' notes:

Even though 2gb RAM is feasible, you would probably need to disable things like Cortana and Bing, and use something like O&O ShutUp10 to reduce system resource use.
MS say 2gb ram is minimum for 64bit - but whether 32bit or 64bit it isn't going to be speedy.

His SSD will help some. If it was a 4800 or 5400 RPM HDD, Win 10 would be a dog.

how do i do as clean install of windows 10? I downloaded the creation tool and created a bootable iso however it asks me to input a key and the only key i can put in is the windows 7 starter one which says is not valid for this installation.

I know i can install windows 10 over windows 7 because i did that with another computer without much issues however you advised to do a clean install

It's because you're inputting an OEM Key (from the sticker on/in your netbook) instead of a Retail Key. Your OEM Key IS a valid Key.

Install Windows 10 clicking on "I don't have a Key". It should install OK. After Windows 10 is installed, go to Settings -> Update and security -> Activation and put your Win 7 Starter OEM Key in the box. You'll probably need to Activate by phone. Do not go through the Automated Activation. Wait to speak to a Microsoft Representative to complete the activation.

well the key didn't get activated, and the Representative left a lot to be said in terms of questions

Eventually after almost an hour i got connected with someone who said since they tried almost all the steps that he could surely solve the issues my connecting to my pc remotely ( something i almost never want to do). Agent connected to my pc entered some numbers did an upgrade and now its activated.

kind of a bit paranoid now but eh the system seems to be working properly now, and windows 10 actually runs almost at par with another laptop that has 6 gb of ram but a standard 5400 rpm hard drive and a quad core processor. The ssd definately makes this thing faster i disabled cortana and other apps/settings that i know i wouldn't use.

My main thing now is my pc drivers don't want to install, they won't even load and i don't know how to get them to work. The windows update didn't pick up anything for some drivers and its still using a microsoft basic display driver.

I needed 3 drivers to function:
    Sound
    display adapter
    fn hotkeys

When you activated your product did you just have to give your windows 7 key to the tech support person? Because the support people couldn't do it that way and the only option was for remote access. But of course i know they could have given me commands to type and numbers and i would have gotten the activation done but i was on the phone already for more than an hour that i didn't feel like arguing about it

Sorry you had to go through all of that to get Windows 10 activated. I knew, though, that the automated system would not have worked at all.

My key(s) are Retail Keys and not OEM Keys. I had a problem activating Windows 8.1 Core on my other laptop (even though the key was on the product key card that came with the DVDs). I used the automated system to activate that version of Windows.

Your netbook manufacturer's Windows 7 drivers for sound, display adapter and fn hotkeys should still work. They might be run in compatibility mode though.

Well the main issue for me at the moment its the display driver its just using the generic one

I installed the driver i pulled off the manufacturer from the website but windows 10 locks up , it gets stuck in an endless reboot cycle because it seems to have issues with the display adapter but before the computer the laptop rebooted when it finished installing he driver it seemed to work fine.

I probably need to go to safe mode and remove it and try something else, the generic display driver looks a bit awful and oversized

well i have gotten most of my drivers to work but still can't get the display driver to work

Well i install it and it works fine HOWEVER once i restart the computer it goes in an endless crashing loop forever until i uninstall via safe mode.

The errors says'' rfq not less than equal'' , '' memory management'', as well as'' kmode ''
if i install the driver and never restart the computer it seems to work, but when pc restarts it all goes to the drain.

after a bit of research it seems i am screwed its either use windows 10 with microsoft basic display driver forever with this laptop or go back to windows 7/linux.

Since i wanted to use windows 10 this is a bit upsetting, but i can't use the pc with this display drivers its just too bad.

If anyone knows of a work around to get the intel 3600 display driver to work i am all ears otherwise i think i have to choose another operating system. I was set with using windows 10 though
