I am just built a new pc and I installed xp on it, but i just recently got my windows 7 professional upgrade in. When I try to install the 64 bit version says "this installion disc isn't compatible with your version of windows. to upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. for more information, check your computers' system information. to install a new copy of windows, restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select custom (advanced). My pc should be a 64 bit version. should I try to reformat with advance settings?

Says that i can use the upgrade disk on xp and it will work like a clean install, but only the 32 bit version works.

Is you copy of XP 32-bit?

If so, then that is the problem. Just boot from the CD once you have backed up all your files and run a clean install. This will wipe XP from the system though, so make sure this is what you want to do.

If you have hard drive space to spare, you could shrink your XP partition and install Windows 7 as a dual boot on a new partition.

Post back if either of these options appeal to you.
