Hi. I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit) and keep receiving update errors. When I check for Windows updates it says 'Window could not search for new updates.' Error code 80070002.

It also says there were 'never' updates installed on this computer. This is not the case. I can't pull up an update history but have seen it before and I think the error occurred initially with a specific update.

In any event, I can't pull a history anymore. I have no idea what to do but am attaching some logs from tdsskiller and farbar. The MS Fix-It and other Windows repair tools did not work and I've also attached a log from one of those. If you don't need those, sorry! I'm tech-challenged.

    Thanks for your help!

Your problem may not have anything to do with malware. It could just be a Windows problem. It sounds like your Windows Update service may be broken. Try the below.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Repair Windows Firewall
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished. Reboot yourself if it does not reboot.

Did that help? If not then you will have to work thru the below if you want to really rule out malware.

You're welcome. Okay still waiting on you ;) but if that does not fix your problem then you will have to post in the Software Forum since it does not appear to be a malware issue.

Okay, so you can either post in the Software Forum for help or if you suspect malware to be the cause, you can run the READ & RUN ME and attach the logs that we request.
