Windows 7 Upgrade disc uses???

I just bought a used Toshiba laptop with Vista on it and they threw in the Windows 7 Home Upgrade disc. They did not install W7 on the laptop yet. I will use it as a 2nd laptop.

I have a newer, nicer laptop -an Asus - that came installed with Windows 7. I am wondering if I can use the W7 upgrade disc on my Asus laptop to do fresh installs with. Since it is only an Upgrade disc, I am wondering if it will work.

I am wondering about the wisdom of this, now that I think about it, since the disc is a 32-bit version and my Asus laptop is a 64-bit.

 

It's unlikely it will work on any PC other than the used Toshiba.

Both restore and upgrade Windows discs that are branded by a PC mfr. have some sort of code embedded in them that matches the disc to the PCs BIOS. Unless the codes for the disc and BIOS match, it's a no go.

My advice is do not attempt to get around this. Attempting to use this disc on the Asus could corrupt your existing Windows install.

You should be able to use the disk to upgrade any computer if the product key hasn't been activated and its a 'genuine Microsoft' upgrade disk and not a manufacturers disk as Gman said.

Once you upgrade the other computer you will have to activate in online,only then will the product key be matched to that computer and will not activate on any other from that point.

BUT its a windows 7 32bit update disk,it will update previous versions of windows to windows 7,it will not install a fresh copy of windows on any computer you will still need an install disk.

IMO EBAY or use it on the old laptop.
