    Hi Everyone,

I am running Win 7 SP1 64 bit system and I have been trying unsuccessfully to make the repair below to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated. I found this problem while repairing another issue and would like to correct it. This is what started me to investigate this issue. The SS below is what I see in my Registry.

Also a note that I also tried creating a ZWORD as I am running a 64 bit system. They both show up on the right side after clicking on the Windows node but doesn't show up on the left side where it belongs. Just for reference as you will see below I was working on DisableOSUpgrade which I have since done.

Open up your registry editor using the Start Menu search or by pressing WIN + R and typing regedit and hitting enter, and then navigate down to the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\
    Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

You’ll probably have to create the WindowsUpdate key on the left-hand side, which you can do by right-clicking the Windows node. Click on that new key, and then create a new 32-bit DWORD called DisableOSUpgrade on the right-hand side, and give it a value of 1.

I have still not been able to see/create my WindowsUpdate file in my registry
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\
    Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

    Hi

Sure the path is correct as I remember it being different HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU then the DWORD NoAutoUpdate and Value = 1

    See this KB https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/328010

LOL, it tends to do that but I normally have it covered as I do all of my image BUs and images every day at 3 different time a day. Yup. I am now a complete bug about being safe:). I play around my Registry more than most folks would dare or know how to, some not at all (no clue). I also format partitions which also has it's dangers but I have had the need do anything with GPT.

I tell family and family all the time about doing it if it falls on dead ears so be it. I finally got my 86 y/o Dad to start BUs about a year ago, if you can lead an old hoarse to water and he drinks is a wonderful thing. I gave him his first computer over 20 years ago and it seems like he is always using it:). He always swore he would NEVER want one of those "things". Right up until the day I brought one to his house then is nothing but drink drink drink, He has had several updates though the years as I update. He finally bought brandy new one a few years ago.

    Hi David,

I am confused why the post you are responding to is showing up in this thread as I start a new thread for it.

I am not trying to create the NoAutoUpdate at this time only get the WindowsUpdate put into my Registry as it seems it needs to be. I believe I have my NAU problem repaired.

Moved to new thread again and closed the other old one as to carry on here.

Why not try creating a new KEY and name it WindowsUpdate - although in mine there are no DWORDS just a default REG_SZ file which is normal for each KEY

Does your Windows update work BTW?

I have the key present on both a 32 bit and 64 bit version of 7 Home Premium, SP1.

I exported my 64 bit key to see what it looked like. This is what it contains
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
    "DisableOSUpgrade"=dword:00000001
Might I suggest you copy what is in the code box and save it as WindowsUpdate with the extension reg

It should appear on your desktop as an icon with the building blocks. Click it and it will ask if you want to merge this with the registry. Answer yes and the key should now appear.

If it doesn't, then you have to consider a malware problem, which I'm reading can prevent you from creating registry keys.
