    Hi
    My 9 year old sone got on my computer did something, now it wont boot.
    I have been working with the folks at the windowssecrets forum, who suggested I could be better helped by this fourm.

    To get to where I am now in debugging this I have tried all the basic stuff of hitting f8 to using the repair disk, tried fixing the MBR and doing a non destructive reload of windows 7, nothing has worked.

    But one of the folks at windowssecrets asked what the 0x numbers are on the BSOD, they are
    ***STOP 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A9928,0XFFFFFFFFC0000034,0X000000000 0000000,0X0000000000000000)

    They said
    0x7B = inaccessible boot device iirc, and my guess is your partitions have been messed with by either a 'repair' or malware.
    Thiis makes makes sense because my son says he turned the machine off and on 6 times trying to log in, probably in the middle of a boot cycle.
    Also, bootsect did not seem to work right, it would not show all my drives.

    I have 3 drives in the machine and I can access all through the cmd prompt, including the 1 windows is installed on.

    So they guess you guys could help me get the machine booted from a cd or usb, and fix the partitions.

    Any ideas:major

    I see you also posted in the software forum. Probably a good idea as I doubt this is a malware issues.

    However, we can take a look.

    Please do the below so that we can boot to System Recovery Options to run a scan. There will be two options to choose from. One if you do not have your Windows 7 boot DVD and another when you have your DVD.

    For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
    For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

    Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

    Option1: Enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.

    Option2: Enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:

    • Insert the installation disc.
    • Restart your computer.
    • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
    • Click Repair your computer.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account and click Next.

    On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Select Command Prompt
    • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
    • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
    • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
    • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
      Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
    • The tool will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this file to your next reply. (See: How to attach)

    Ended up copying windows->windows.old, program->program.old....
    And re-installing.

    Then tried going back to old windows ie;
    ren windows -> windows.new.....
    ren windows.old -> windows

    And re-boot, same non reboot as before.

    Switched back to the install, and ran virus and malware check, nothing was found.
    So 9yo did something bad.

    So went back to install and rebuilt everything only took about 4hrs.
    Now have clean machine, I hope without too much effort.
    Think I should of upgraded to a ssd since I did all the work anyhow
