I have a desktop PC running Windows 7 x64 SP1. I am trying to get it to update, and it says it requires 5 important updates and 6 optional. I can't get any of them to install. When I try to run Windows Update it The updates it says it requires (important) are:

    KB4493132
    KB4516065
    KB4474419
    KB4524102
    KB4503548

When I go to install it runs for a while and downloads them, then gives me a red error saying 5 updates failed. I read online that i require KB3125574, which I don't have, but when I download it from Microsoft and try to manually install it, it gets halfway then says it can't be installed. I'run the troubleshooter which says it's good to go. I've also cleared everything from C:>>Windows>>SoftwareDistribution, but same result. I've stopped and restarted the Service, no luck. Any ideas?

Granted, there's still an underlying issue with the fact that they wont take though. I'd like to get it working properly if I can.

This won't help you but you might feel better to know you aren't alone, at least as far as the top two on your list.

Did you install the SSU released at the end of September? KB4516655?

It's my understanding that if this isn't installed Windows update doesn't work. I don't update through Windows update. I go to the catalog, download what I want and install. I've been doing it that way for 3 years on four Windows 7 computers.

Next try 4474419, the SH-2 signing update. Only if your Win 7 is 64 bits.

Reboot then try Windows update again.
Hide KB4493132 - you don't want to be nagged.
Hide KB4524102 this is a non-security update for .NET frameworks. You don't need it. When the security one is issued, you can install that.
KB4503548 tries to install multiple times. This is from August. I don't have .NET framework 4.8, which this update applies to so I had no need to install it.

If you use Windows Update, which I do, MS says the latest SSU is installed automatically.

So 4516655 isn't currently installed. So, I downloaded it from MS and attempted to install it manually, but got the same result as I did with 3125574. Installs halfway, hangs for a few minutes, then gives me the message "The following updates were not installed...".

What was the last update that did not fail? (KB # as well as date of the update)

I might need to look back a few months to see if you failed to install needed updates to get Windows update to work correctly.
