Ive been doing some reading up on the new Windows 7, but i cant find anything about performance. I do alot of gaming, i have tons of services disabled on my Windows xp pro. Is Windows 7 going to have alot of useless junk running all the time like XP, can it all be disabled, is Windows 7 gonna be gamer friendly? Why are they coming out w/ Windows 7? Is it mainly because Vista turned out to be a flop?....Grrrr, i hate when they come out w/ a new operating system...is it really gonna benefit the user...ive tried them all but always end up back w/ XP...any input would be great...thx

Well as for how it runs, I have no idea.
It is supposed to be run on less system requirements unlike Vista, it looks a whole lot neater.

From what I have seen, it looks as if they are trying to have the desktop like the Mac OS x, which would not be a bad thing.

Their are free Beta versions available but I would boot it as a virtual desktop instead of a whole new operating system.

But it should be out at the start of 2010.

    Looks good.

It is suggested where possible to run the beta on a dedicated machine.
I have it running on a dedicated laptop and at the moment like what i see.
It does have a different look and feel to Vista and after some glitches at the start it is now stable.
When i first loaded it the system was sooooo slow it was as if it was underwater but on advice from Halo i updated the driver for the ethernet adapter and that speeded thing up incredibly.
I am not sure how good it will be for gaming as i don't do a lot but FF works well and fast.
I will over the next few days load and run some other applications and see how they perform but at the moment i am just letting it run a folding programe to see if it remains stable.

    Hi

Windows 7 service list or more so what is running by default has been re assessed and less services now run as default, I found on a clean install of Vista SP1 55 services running and in Windows 7 only 38.

Cheers on the updated BV list MarkT.

As for gamer friendly, maybe so but in part some of the compatability is down to the 3rd party developer and if they tailor their game to run in say XP, Vista, Win7 with the core OS specs for each taken into account.

Some may say its because Vista was a flop, but if you actually see the timelines to Windows OS's then this is not a new occurance to release a new OS within 2yrs, Vista just took longer than it should have due to legal issues.

We have been spoilt with XP in last few years, but its start was not all roses, it hit the same compatability issues that all new Windows versions do, think personally the issue is people dont like change and with computing and the internet so easy to aquire these days more users grew up with XP being the only OS available than with many of the others so prefer that OS over whats new.

To be honest, if you dont like Vista, then Windows 7 will be a shock as its similar in many respects, although its kernel is new and redesigned from that of Vista, the GUI is close, and if many take the stance on not liking an OS because they think its a memory hog due to used ram then Windows 7 and by design will use as much as you can throw at it as and without harping on with this again.... then having 4GB ram and 3GB free is a waste of ram, if its not used its not doing anything useful!

Yes been running it since late 2008 as invited to test the PDC prebeta version and now onto the beta1, its good, some issues and bugs still but the dev teams on the various areas are superb and addressing all reports and bugs on this. For me and in this stage of the project its much more stable than that of XP and Vista at this point in time of the beta, not perfect and a ways to go but pretty good so far and soem 3rd party software companies need to get onboard now and make their apps compatible rather than wait until the final release as soem did with XP and Vista which caused many users grief.
