I just recently started using windows 7 professional, and looking for advice to make it a bit quicker and more responsive. So far it is so much better than vista and worth the money as well, but it still could use its tweaking to make it run a lil more stable and responsive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Hi

What Hardware do you have in this PC? CPU, RAM, GFX card, HDD?

    Some basics are to do....

    1. Make sure you have all drivers installed (noting in Device Manager with a yellow ! mark) and that they are to the best of your ability Windows 7 certified ones.

    2. Install a core set of Security applications, dont go over the top too many can slow your PC down, so rule of thumb in 1 AA, 1 FW and 1 live scanning antimalware app at once.

    3. At this point you could list your Startups (can find this in CCleaners > Tools > Startups list) as recucing this list from the really not needed applications can help with performance, we can advise when we know the apps you have starting , can type them out or attach a screenshot (do crop the screenshot to just the relevent list area)

    4. When you have install most of your core applicaions etc then Run a cleanup with CCleaner of the Cleaner and the Registry options to remove alot of junk, do the registry one until nothing is listed for removal.

    5. Do a defrag of your PC, can use the inbuilt defragger in Windows 7 or AusLogics is ok

    6. Appearance, could disable Aero (the glass look) if your having speed issues, right click the Desktop and choose Personalization > then choose Windows Basic or if you right click Computer > Properties and choose Advanced System Settings > Advanced tab and Settings then you can customise many options.

    7. Could tweak the service list HERE ... big WARNING is this can cause many things to fail, if you dont know that the knock on effects from disabling one service can cause to another.

    Should get you started.
