Hi, I have a problem with Windows 8.1, all I get is a black screen.
I think this was caused by a graphics driver update.
I can not access safe mode as the OS will not load. I have no OS disk as it's onboard the laptop.
The only thing I can do is access the BIOS thru F2 & Boot manager thru F12.
    I think I need a Windows 8.1 repair disk which I don't have.

Any solutions or advice where I can download the repair disk?

Dell Inspiron 17r running Windows 8.1

I have a second laptop (which I'm using now) running Windows 7.

Sorry, but unless you have a TechNet subscription you cannot download a copy of 8 or 8.1, well, legally anyway.

If you cannot get into the OS, or access Safe Mode you will need to contact your laptop manufacturer to obtain discs. For future reference, you can create a set of recovery discs or a bootable USB stick ONCE with any new PC.

    Nightmare.
I'll try and obtain the disks from Dell.
    Thanks for your response.

Sure you can as long as you have the product key.

That's a download for someone who can retrieve their license key from a bootable OS. The key is no longer on a COA on the PC anymore, and the OP will not be able to retrieve the key via Belarc or RecoverKeys.

However, it is a viable option should you be able to connect the drive externally to another PC and retrieve the key.

And, you can't use that link with a retail OEM key. Unless you actually purchased W8 without a PC, you can't use that link.

Just a heads up, I have a legit key for a W8 HP PC. It does not work when entered.

I've UEFI setups where you can view the key in it. I wouldn't be so pessimistic.

OK then, you can find the key.

The key being validated and being able to download the file and create an .iso or bootable flash drive would be a neat trick.

Get around not being able to use your license key to validate the download and let me know...

Seriously, you are going to make a scene and fight with me over this?

Fine, I won't help any further.

Unfortunately I do not have the key. It's my sons laptop and he never backed anything up.
I have Kaspersky Rescue Disk which I can access on his laptop.
Is it possible to locate the corrupted drivers and delete them using Kaspersky Rescue Disk?
It has a file manager and I can access his hard drive using this tool. I can see all his files on the hard drive.

    Clutching at straws here...

No scene intended Adry, and not pessimist just pragmatic.

Using a command prompt to edit Windows was possible on 7, but I've never made such an attempt on 8. There was a way of restoring an older copy of the registry and hives but that was using a Windows disk, not Linux and I've never had to attempt it with 8.

Have you tried Shift + F8?

You could try using a WinPE environment, depending on how advanced a user you are:
