Windows 8 and Steam?

I got a new laptop, a Toshiba C55t-A. It came with Windows 8. I'm not much of a gamer, but my son plays Steam games on it.

He says that his Steam games don't work right, and showed me what he was talking about.

He went into Team Fortress 2, and while he can walk with W, and look around with the touchpad, he can't do both simultaneously.

Is this possibly a setting or something that we're missing?

I don't play team fortress 2, but I do have windows 8 and play a few steam games, and they work just fine.

I know that doesn't answer your question, but just wanted to get that out that windows 8 is probably not the issue.

Some laptops shut off the mouse pad when keyboard input is detected to help prevent random mousing during typing, perhaps its something like this?

Yeah, I suppose it could be. Any idea about to check for that? I'm trying to muck around with the two right here in this text box, and it seems you may be onto something.

Seems to be a fair amount of questions on the Steam forums related to games good for trackpads, not found a fix on any of those threads I read, but my only solution is one I would use in getting a cheap wired or wireless mouse, disable the trackpad when playing Team Fortress and using the keys for getting around and the mouse for looking around and shooting stuff.

It's annoying. It should be a setting somewhere, but I can't find it. I posted in the Toshiba forums and also sent an email to the Syanptics (or however it's spelled) customer support to see if they can tell me.

Appreciate the help. If I get a solution I'll post it here so we will all know next time.

Most people when laptop gaming use an external mouse for what its worth.

    Does this help?

If your son is going to play TF2, he will probably thank you if you get him an external mouse. You can set Synaptics to turn off the touchpad when you plug in a USB mouse, and for games that require quick maneuvering and shooting a touchpad frankly sucks. :)

Also, it's very likely that TF2 doesn't have touchpad support, a lot of games don't.

I'd lost mu edit ability by the time I thought of that. It's been a long week. :)

Turn off palm detection in the touchpad software...

Thanks for the link. I can't find any way to disable the disable function though. Apparently in some other versions of the software there is a checkbox for it, but not mine.

He has a mouse somewhere, he just never uses it.

For the record, I hate gaming on the keyboard. I play Wii and Xbox, but unless I can plug a controller in the USB post I can't play online games worth anything.

You kids and your super dexterious fingers... :)
