I purchased a new computer a while back and it had Windows 8 and IE 10 installed. At first everything worked like it should as far as browsing but after having to call the computer manufacturer due to my refreshing it and them talking me through a fresh install, IE 10 won't open. I use chrome but was checking IE 10 recently and it's not opening the web page when clicking on it's icon. Is it the browser or Windows 8? I've researched and tried one suggestion but it didn't work. The one I tried was to go to internet options, click on advanced, click reset and check delete personal settings box (which wasn't there). Any ideas?

Are you using it from the desktop or the Metro UI?

    Hello Blueone,

After the "call the computer manufacturer" and the fresh install of Windows 8: Did you go directly to Windows Update?

The reason I ask is because a "fresh install" would subsequently require numerous Windows Updates.

Side Note: Additionally, Windows 8 has recently been updated to Windows 8.1

I was having some problems with my "Metro Icons" which were consequently fixed after updating to Windows 8.1

I've tried to open it from every location (3). When any are clicked on, it flashes a 3/4 page white window for a split second.

Thanks, I'll give it a look. I think I updated it but can't remember. I had been hesitant about updating to 8.1 but will give it a try.

To COMPUABLE, when updating to 8.1 did everything go smoothly? By that I mean was your desktop the same etc. I reverted my desktop to look like XP and also installed a start button. Not that it's a big deal, just curious to know if it would change any of those type things.

I had to reinstall a couple drivers with 8.1, but its typically a smooth install.

I installed it on my daughter's desktop too, and it went through without a hitch.

    Hello Blueone,

When I updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 (in my case, anyway) everything went very smoothly, including the icon shortcuts remaining on the desktop.

Also, the various freeware and shareware programs I had previously installed were not negatively affected in any way. I also had previously installed Start8 (from Stardock) and it was not affected in any way. And all of my personal files, desktop apps, user accounts, and settings were unaffected as well. At least that was my experience. Unfortunately, I cannot say whether or not your installed start button and/or the reverted desktop "to look like XP" will be negatively affected by the update to Windows 8.1... If it does, you can always re-install them. ;)

Side Notes: Before you go through with the update, I would strongly suggest thoroughly reading Microsoft's tutorial Update to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8

(if you have a printer be sure to Print that Tutorial (Ctrl+P)

Also, keep in mind that the Windows 8.1 update itself takes a while (in my case it took a couple of hours) and requires several automatic "reboot-ups" to complete.

Important Note: DO NOT turn off your computer during the update! It will also be a good idea when the update completes to go directly to Windows Update for the very latest updates.
