Windows 8!! like a new user account!

hello helpful peoples,

today I started up my HP laptop, which I have had about 1 year and 1 month working fine with windows 8.

But today my only account name, which is an admin account, looks like a new user profile, there are only installed apps icons.
Any user data or documents pictures, videos, music, browser favourites have gone. There is quite a few gig of these :cry

the scenario on start-up is as follows;
I use my 24" hd tv for this laptop screen, I started laptop, turned on hdtv which was on tv channel mode. After a minute or so I pressed space bar and typed in my password.

I watched tv for another few seconds then thought laptop would be at start screen after login (that's the normal win8 start screen after logging in with all the apps showing).

However, this is where the fun begins.
I was still at password login screen,hmm, After I used my e-mail password to login, the screen said "Hi getting things started or similar, then went on to say about putting cursor to top corner of the screen..hmm..

I thought I better lets this run its course and not turn off laptop otherwise I might just corrupt windows or something..

Long story short - after about 5mins I was presented with the regular win 8 default type / touch screen icon showing programs apps etc..

Although all my user data was gone, desktop icons relating to user and music photos docs browser favourites history and browser was also bing - I use google by default and win Media player is like new config startup / setup.

I have only one account on this laptop and it is as admin privs..

I do recall many years ago, when I used to do some IT work, that several user's had a similar issue with windows XP.

The issue then turned out to be related to Windows defender finding something suspect in several users account and freaking automatically renaming the old user account (what a lot of fun that was trying t discover). I have recently started using windows defender as of about 1 month ago. Unfortunately I don't recall the fix for this if this is the issue.

System restore failed with error (0x81000204) - not run in safe mode.

The only other issue of note was several days ago I ran windows defender after my homepage was repeatedly redirected to "conduit", which I fixed and ran fine for several days since then. Win Defender did find an issue with java but that was isolated and had no issues.

Only recent download was of free AVs software - for video conversion, think that's where the conduit browser also installed from btw. The icons for this do not appear on my new profile account? neither does my command and conquer shortcut and several other small text based docs. Although League of legends online game icon is still present.


Any info on repairing this issue would be much appreciated, as I have seemingly lost access to GB's of photo docs and music. I have 500GB Hard Drive, with 362GB available, this leads me to believe the data is still here.

If the account was renamed or something and recreated as new because the account was thought to be corrupt by windows or win defender, can you please advise on how to recover data.

ISSUE REOLVED

had to go to lunch, had time to think a lil more about this one, checked user accounts / sure enough was extra account, which was made today, having to use my email account and password to login threw me a lil.

turns out was just another pebkau
problem exists between keyboard and user :-o
