recently purchased windows 8. not showing dual cpu....so its not compatible??

I don't mind as long as dual cpu are physically working.i don't see any decrease in performance ever since the upgrade

it may help, I ran a compatibility just now (should've done it before) and it says:

Install an application to play DVDs
You may need to install an application to play DVDs in Windows 8.
    More info

Secure Boot isn't compatible with your PC
Your PC's firmware doesn't support Secure Boot so you won't be able to use it in Windows 8.
    More info

despite this my computer runs like a dream with windows 8. my only concern is its NOT stating 2 processors in brackets in system information via control panel as it used to in windows 7!

That just means your motherboard does not use the newer UEFI BIOS, so "Secure Boot" won't work. It does not mean your board is not compatible with W8.

In Task Manager > Performance tab, what does it say for Sockets, Cores, and Logical processors?

as requested in the task manager>performance tab it states
    cpu ......................intel xeon cpu e5450@3ghz

    sockets 1
    cores 4
    logical processors 4

there is still no mention of dual processors.

if it helps I went into device manager>processors and I saw EIGHT lines of intel xeon cpu e5450@3ghz .

please see with windows 8 licence agreement which states it supports only one core.

Other people have mentioned win pro allows dual cpu!?

Not really because with hyper-treading, the OS treats each core as 2. So a single quad-core CPU will have 8 processors listed (confirmed with my single quad-core i7 in this system).

You say you just purchased Windows 8. Does that mean you previously had an earlier version of Windows on this system? And if yes, did it show both CPUs?

Also, what version of Windows 8? According to this chart, the "Core" version (plain Windows 8 - not Pro, Enterprise, or RT) only supports 1 "physical processor".

I have the basic windows 8 ie. core version
before this i had windows 7 ultimate which showed stated 2 processors in brackets in control panel>system section and everywhere i went even when I went to task manager>processor it showed 8 graphs .In the current one im using it only shows 4 graphs in the task manager>processor.

As long as the computer is using the other processor there really is no need of major concern I suppose. If necessary I could upgrade to windows 8 PRO which will support 2 cpu

But if using the core version, it is not using the other processor. So if you don't want it consuming power, generating heat, but doing no work, you will need to upgrade to Pro.

Well if you are saying that my windows 8 core is currently using one processor. Why is it that after some pc usage that I touch the cpu heatsinks that both cpu heatsinks are feeling warm?PLease give me a logical explanation so I can be assured.many thanks

I dont mean to judge you in any way as I am sure you know what you are talking about, more than myself.

No offence taken, but you do need accept the evidence that is before you - it is overwhelming.

The convincing evidence - some of which you provided is as follows (my blue emphasis added),

    From Post 1:
    "not showing dual cpu...."

    From Post 4:
as requested in the task manager>performance tab it states
    cpu ......................intel xeon cpu e5450@3ghz

    sockets 1
    cores 4
    logical processors 4

    From Post 7:

Why is it warm? It is warm because it is installed on a motherboard that supports two CPUs. That means when you turn the computer on, power is applied to the second CPU too. And with power applied, it IS running and it WILL get warm.

Remember, the operating system is not loaded until AFTER the hardware has booted. The hardware (motherboard components including the RAM, processors, graphics, networking, buses) is initialized and configured by the BIOS via the chipset instructions EARLY in the boot process BEFORE the boot drive (with the operating system) is even touched.

So your second CPU is fired up, raring to go, and waiting for instructions before ANY operating system is loaded. But because that version of Windows does not support dual-CPUs, it does not know how to communicate with, or send tasks to the second CPU. So the second CPU just sits there running at system clock (bus) speeds, but doing no work. It is just running in place - going no where.

Following the discussion.I decided to upgrade to the pro

having done so it is now showing 2 processors in brackets when i view system info in control panel .

when i goto task manager>performance I now see 8 graphs as opposed to just 4.Also it shows different information as follows:

    BEFORE

    sockets -1
    cores- 4
    logicol processors - 4

    L1 cache-256kb
    L2 cache-12.0mb

    AFTER

    sockets -2
    cores- 8
    logicol processors - 8

    L1 cache- 512kb
    L2 cache- 24.0mb

Many thanks couldnt have done it without you.
