windows 8 won't shut down

just got the new computer with win 8 and it won't shut down after 5 days use.
am trying system restore but 1 hour later it isn't restoring..just the animated time bar...preparing to restore..on and on..
take it back? or is there another fix here I am missing

Windows 8 don't need shutting down. Microsoft has designed windows 8 to go to in to hibernating mode and it frees up memory just log back in and its like a brand new windows.

If its a laptop just close the lid.
If desktop go to the top right hand side and click settings then click power there is 3 options there, Sleep, Shut Down, Restart.

Hi

Windows 8 has a weird shutdown and not my fav part of Win8 if truth be told, but you can shutdown Windows as andy mentions above or you can do what I did and created a Shutdown Tile

To do this click the Desktop tile (normal Windows desktop look) and right click anywhere on the screen and click New > Shortcut

In the window that opens in the "type the location of item" box paste the below (note the spaces between n /s /t

C:\windows\system32\shutdown /s /t 20

Click Next and if you want you can name the Shortcut anything you wish.

Now right click this new shortcut and choose Properties, and click the Change Icon button and here you can pick any icon you wish, don't worry if you get an error message telling you there are not icons associated with this as the icon shell list will show.

Once you have chosen your icon click OK > Apply

You can then right click this icon and click Pin to Start and this will add the icon to the START screen.

The Settings cogwheel on the charms bar has a power button. That's how you shut down Win 8.

You mean the Three Finger salute (Ctrl-Alt-Del) is not bringing up the same screen that has been with XP/Vista/7, that allows you to choose shutdown in the lower right corner? Works on my son's Toshiba Satellite. Easier than that Yoga way design that Microsoft wants people to shut it down through Metro, and easier than creating some task.
