I've been forced to bootup my old W95 desktop lately.
I cannot get my mouse to function on the bottom toolbar.
The START icon does not work. No matter what I click on the bottom toolbar, nothing works. Icons and shortcuts on the front page all work.
I have tried 2 different mice, 2 button and 3 button. I have tried letting Windows detect new hardware. I have deleted existing mice setup in the Control panel and installed PS2 standard mouse more than once.

Any ideas as I have to put my laptop in for repairs and must get my old desktop going again.

Found a serial to USB adapter in my junk stuff. Going to try this later, but any other ideas would be appreciated. Bazza

Hey Bazza. Are you sure it's the mouse?

Steve, no I'm not sure it is the mouse as the mouse works for everything else. What else could it be? All I know is that I can't click on START or anything else on the bottom line. I can't shut down the PC by the normal way. I can't go START--->RUN. I can't adjust the time from the bottom line. I can, if I go into Control Panel. Also I think my battery has had it (after many years) but that is a separate problem) and I can fix that when the shops open again.

I want to run MSCONFIG but did W95 have msconfig? If not, how do I check startup stuff. I've forgotten as it is over 5 years since I used W95. Bazza

Could it be that you have the Task Bar locked? :)

Could be. I think I unlocked it in IE, but is there another place I have to go, also? Bazza

Later versions of 95 have msconfig. 95B should have it buitin, if not here is a link to it. MSCONFIG. A scan with AVG reports the file clean.

If you can't get to the run dialog or a CMD Prompt???

Otherwise, I don't have a clue what could be causing your problem. I haven't used 95 in aleast as long as yourself. I thought I was Nostalgic for keeping a 98SE box around.

I'll keep researching it, see what I can find.

Just been into IE 5.5. View shows toolbar as unticked. Cannot check it using either mouse button. Can tick/untick Status Bar but not Toolbar, if this helps. Bazza===

Thanks a bunch. I thought I had W95b on this but will check it out. Thanks for the link to MSCONFIG. Can't get to the RUN dialog or the command prompt from Windows. Can get to the command prompt when booting up, though, by pressing F8. Thanks for the help. It appears as though I have to toolbar blocked, see eralier responses, but I cannot tick/check it in IE 5.5. Bloody annoying. I have

Continuing on from previous post. I have downloaded MSCONFIG, thanks. To shut the PC down I have to CTRL--ALT--DELETE every time. Next time I boot up I get the message that windows did not close down the right way azs a result. Bazza

Yeah, pretty typical W95 behavior. You got TweakUI for W95. Don't know how useful that would be?

Don't know what I did but all of a sudden START works. Was able to RUN===> MSCONFIG and shut down all the crap that was loading at Startup. This box is so old that I believe it dates back to me starting on the Net. No favourites other than those AOL provided. No download folder, etc. Talk about stirring up the old grey brain cells. I have just downloaded and installed an old version of Zone Alarm, thanks to a prevoius reply from Halo to another thread. Have an old version of NAV. Going to see if Avast will run on W95. If not, what would you recommend. Only have 32mb RAM but it still works. May try for some more RAM tomorrow when shops open (public holiday). RAM is those very long sticks. have plenty of other ram but they are all shorter. Bye for now, thanks again. Bazza

AVAST should work, 32mb Memory requirement, runs on 9x.

AVG I couldn't find the Min Sys Requirements. Could give it a try.

Prefer Avast to AVG. Will download it from MG. Having fun getting W95 running again. Amazing what you forget. Thanks to you both, again. Bazza
