OK, updates installed--but I closed after "enable all protection", so, spyware
blaster didn't "blast away" anything ?? does spyware "blast away" anything ??

OR, what do I do next re spyware blaster ??

I also clicked on "update all updates automatically", or words to that effect

  2. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Auto Update only works in the paid version. Your ok. Just make sure you update periodically.

Other than that how is the system running now.

  3. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

also, spyware blaster isn't "running in the backround" (re the "end task" box)

---does that mean spyware blaster isn't constantly protecting me ??

  4. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    our postings crossed again

are you asking a question ???? eg "how is the system running now ??"

I don't see anything changing, or not changing, eg no "pop ups" FROM spyware blaster, say, "warning me" of attempts to PUT IN trojans, or spyware, or whatever

  5. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

No it doesn't run full time.

    One more thing to do.

    Open Windows Explorer

    goto C:\Program Files

Right-click inside the files window, select New -> Folder

    name that folder HijackThis

    now copy hijackthis.zip to C:\Program Files\HijackThis

Righ-click on the zip file select Extract here

    delete hijackthis.zip

    Right-click HijackThis.exe select New -> Shortcut

Drag n Drop that shortcut to your desktop.

close all windows, and programs, includeing this browser session.

Double Click the HijackThis Shortcut. It will create a Hijackthis.log in C:\Program Files\HijackThis post that back here as an attachment do not copy and paste it into the thread.

I have to go into town, be back latter tonight.

  7. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I never downloaded nor installed hijackthis.zip

we skipped over that, as best I can recall, some fifty (50) postings ago
---I'll try to dig thru these postings and try to try to download, and install,
hijackthis.zip (if I can find the posting which links to that, and then try to download and install same)

  8. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I downloaded hijackthis (two minutes ago), and it showed up (in my trojans etc removal folder)---I highlighted it, and hit edit---then a drop down menu came up--then I hit (on thatr dropdown menu) "copy"---nothing happened

then I went back to "the before highlighting" step, and double clicked on
hijakthis (to see if an install was needed)---a box popped up and asked me if I wanted to save it "to disc"---since it was already "saved to disc", I figured there was no point in doing THAT again

note also that when I downloaded hijackthis it was not named hijackthis.zip

    where am I re hijackthis.zip ?? and should I re-name that hijacthis.zip ??

you recommended the download of hijackthis.zip in the 16th string (of these
22 strings), and that was/contained (I guess) the link

  9. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

assuming I get, eventually, the hijackthis file copied into the HijackThis folder (within Program files, within Windows Explorer), I'm going to have furter questiobs (and problems ??) re your below---such as, HOW do I do an attachment to these postings ??

the "additional options" (below) are, to me, "clear as mud"

I must also go out (at around 6:30 PM, or in about 20 minutes),
and when get back wil probably hit the sack---and busy day tomorrow, for me

Just got back, went to get a puppy my wife wanted. If you can call a 7 month old shepard a puppy.

You can right click on hijackthis.zip select Copy then goto C:\Program Files\HijackThis then right click select Paste.

  11. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    just got back

OK---copied hijackthis.zip file into hijackthis folder

right clicked "extract this" (re the ORIGINAL "copied from" folder named "Trojans etc removal)
deleted hijackthis.zip (which is in the folder "Trojans, etc removal")

but wouldn't it have been easier to just drag & drop the hijackthis.zip
into the HighjackThis folder (created in Program files) ??

    In any event, WHERE is "Hijackthis.exe" to right click on ?? I don't have (do I ??) a Hijackthis.exe file ??

dogs are nice---grandkids, kids, wife, me---about five (5) dogs, maybe three (3) cats, boa constrictor, rabbits, lizards, parrots---all gone or some still around

boa constrictors & lizards "have no personality", and rabbits are "kinda dumb"

  12. Shadow_Puter_Dude

Right-click on the hijackthis.zip file select Extract here

    delete hijackthis.zip

    Right-click HijackThis.exe select New -> Shortcut

  13. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    OK

for the "moved" hijackthis.zip, right clicked on same
    then, clicked on "attract this"

this brought up (in the same folder) highjackthis with a DIFFERENT icon

so, at that point in time had two(2) hijackthis files (with different icons) in the hiajackthis folder

    deleted the FIRST hijackthis file

I still don't see hijackthis.exe---and highjackthis.exe doesn't come up when I left click, or tright click, on that NEWE hijackthis file (with the different icon)

am I missing something that should be (say) obvious to me ??

  14. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

If the file has a file name of HijackThis with no extension and the icon looks like tnt with a detenator plunger right-click select New -> Shortcut, drag n drop shortcut to HijackThis to your desktop.

Close all windows, and programs, including this browser session.

Double Click the HijackThis Shortcut. It will create a Hijackthis.log in C:\Program Files\HijackThis post that back here as an attachment DO NOT copy and paste it into the thread.

  15. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    correction

selected "extract here". not "attract this" (senility ??)

  16. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

YES !!! plunger hooked to dynamite !!!

so, after I drag & drop it, close EVERYTHING (including my connection to NetZero)

but I must connect with Netzero in order to send (??) that shortcut to you as an attachment, right ?? which means I must log on, again, to the internet

and I don't know HOW to send you an attachment via (or to) major geeks

  17. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

that shortcut has been dragged & dropped to the desktop (so, of course, that shortcut disappeared from the prior folder)---that shortcut was created automatically, ie no "new" came up

next step close down major geeks, close down program files, close down C,
and close down (or disconnect) from NetZero (which before that has a window on the desktop) ??

so, then I 'm "looking at" only a bunch of icons (and their names) on the desktop ??

then, I hit the NetZero shortcut, on the desktop, & get connected, again, to the internet ??

When you post your reply just scroll down until you find the Manage Attachments button it's in the Additional Options just below the Reply to Thread box. Click that button another window will open click Browse button navigate to C:\Program Files\HijackThis select the Hijackthis.log. You can stay on-line, it's just that with less running the log will be smaller.

  19. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    closed everything (including disconnect)

    double clicked on thsat shortcut

what came up was a BIG box, which said, in part, "Pay Pal donote" (in a little box)

    Hijack this V1.99.1

    Welcome to etc etc

    New Users quickstart

    and in a box
what would you like to do ?
    dark print (in a box)
Do a system scan & save a logfile---did not click

Do a system scan only ?? did not click

view the lists of backups ?? ---did not click

open online hijackthis quickstart ?? courtesy of TomCoyote dot org---did not click

none of the above, just start the program---did not click

checkbox --unchecked--do not show this file again when start this hijackthis

so, I cancelled this (didn't click on anything), connected to NetZero, and then connected to major geeks

no "hijackjthis log file" (or anything) showed up WITHIN the hijack this folder (say, underneath the hijack this file)

    did some of the below

results ?? a long winded message in a box, and a long list of boxes (none
of them checked) and the list has next to each box an address ((?)

there is no "hijackthis.log" file in the "hijackthis" folder---there is an ADDITIONAL "hijack this" file in that folder, with a different icon,
but the title/name of that created file is not "hijackthis.log", ie it is ONLY "hijack this"

when I left click on that created file I just get a repeat of a prior message

is this (the latter created file) the file you want me to post as an attachment ?? so, for example, you can tell me which boxes (re that list) you want me to check ???

then there are other boxes (??) to click on, such as

"scan & fix stuff" and "fix checked, and "info on selected item---", and "other
stuff" , "config---", and "add checked to ignore list"

  24. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    ---additional thought

perhaps (??) I should re-name that created file "hijackthis.log file, all boxes not checked" ??????

Leave the name as it is. Don't do anything with the boxes in hijackthis leave then alone. In Windows Explorer on the Menu Bar select Tools -> Folder Options , click View Tab, uncheck Hide extensions for known file types, click OK. Now the files estension will display.

you must have a 40 inch monitor

--I don't/can't even get to "file missing" in any of those nine (9) items----
there are too many which have presario slash net scripts, and many of the numbers and dashes etc look the same to me

it looks like, in part, you are saying, re code 09 (or whatever it is) do NOT check the two (1) Java line items, but do check the remaining six (6) code 09 items

and then close everything (including go offline) EXCEPT the list, and then
    click "fix checked"

and then exit HJT (but I've already "exited" HJT WHEN I go offline ??)

the list still remained on the desktop

then clicked on "fix checked", and then that long list disappeared---then clicked exit for that blank box

    then went online---etc

on the hide, or not hide, hidden files, am still in "that mode" (of SHOW all hidden files) ??---that is if I don't go back to some default (which hides files) every time I turn off, and then turn on, this PC

is that different from show, or hide, or unhide, file extensions ??
anyhow, what different does it make if .exe is shown, or hidden ???

it is also confusing using .exe, as some could interet such as "extension",
while other could interpret that as "execute"

even for stuff like internet explorer 6 service pack 1 ???
I thought I had IE 5.5 ?? or is it Outlook Express 5.X vs 6.X
---I get confused about explorer vs outlook express

also, re "installation history", I had already installed some updates,BUT uninstalled "some of those some", but in "installation history" some of them, uninstalled, might still be on that "installation history" list

I'm not too sure how accurately Windows update "interrogates" my PC,
nor sure they "de-list" (on "installation history") those updates which I've installed, and then later, uninstalled

Windows listed eleven (11) critical updates (for my PC), but since I
have uninstalled some updates, I may have (to be done) say 13 or 15 updates ----they also have (as the "existing box" next to some updates)
the word "remove", not "install", or "yes"

  37. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

and for Windows 98, and Windows 98 SE, they list forty two (42) possible updates

  38. eigenvalue

my installation history says I have installed about twenty-nine (29) updates,
icluding Internet explorer 6 service pack 1---BUT they say I must/should
install that SAME thing--what's going on re that, or similar ??

  39. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

my installation history even says I installed Internet Explorer 6 service pack 1
THREE (3) times on the SAME date (back in 2003)

  40. Shadow_Puter_Dude

Start with everything that is under Critical Updates. You may have to do this several times to get everything. Many of those updates will require you to restart after they are installed.

I got your recent e mail (although not yet posted here)
--will probably start doing that tomorrow

must go out shortly for about five (5) hours

makes no sense to me that Microsoft ALLOWS me to update the same thing three (3) times, and that Microsoft doesn't "delete" from my installation
history update stuff which I've updated, and then uninstalled

oops, your e mail was just posted

    just got in

a short question---although (per my "history" of what I've updated),
I must update Internet Explorer 6 service pack 1 for the FOURTH time ??
---I would think having, or trying to have, any update IN this PC MORE than one (1) time COULD "screw things up" (within this PC)

(sigh)--and then there is the problem of NetZero disconnecting me, possibly,
right in the middle of downloading some LARGE updating file (or "patch")

I seem to recall that you pointed out, maybe forty (40) postings ago, that I do have Internet Explorer 6 (not 5, and not 5.5) installed in this PC

anyhow, must hit the sack in the next fifteen (15) minutes or so

  44. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Yes you have IE6 with SP1. You could download the unofficial Service Pack from here run that and then do the windows update.

UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack 2.01 Final

If downloading large files is an issue, then run windows update and only select a few files at a time to update.

  45. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

good ie then I don't have to download that critical update (IE 6, service pack one)

---am I SURE, if it appears at least once in my "history of what I've updated", (re Windows updates) list, that I have, in fact, ALREADY downloaded (and installed, and NOT uninstalled) update XYZ ???---if that is true, that means some of those elevan (11) "critical" updates have ALREADY been done---same re the list of forty two (42) possible updates (which "Mr. Windows" has provided)

I'll try also to download, and install (assuming there IS an "install" to be done or is necessary), that "unofficial" update (??) to Windows 98 SE (service pack 2.01 final)
