and, as of around 3:00 PM (EST) I got "up to" about 21,000,000 bytes
received before NetZero disconnected me---previously, I guess my "record"
for bytes rec'd (prior to "unilateral disconnect") was around 10,000,000

I guess I should get DSL---but I only seldom download much stuff, be such
small bytes of stuff, or large bytes of stuff, in any "single session" or any
    single download

---I even go back to the 1970's re business planning (economics end, not
engineering end) concerning satellites, and terrestrial transmission
---some of that was, sort of, "pre internet internet" stuff (re, say, T-1
lines, AND even e mail, or voicemail) but there were no PC's around
1974 to 1979---Digital Equipment Corp workstations existed in the 1970's, but they cost (as best I can recall) around $500,000 each

typed my posting (below) before I read your posting (below)

    checked all the boxes

some (??) install of components "did their thing"

message came up "installation complete (or completed)"

ah, another "milestone" (or "millstone") has been done

you haven't commented on whether or not I should update
(re Windows update) the stuff which "my" installation "history of updates" tells me I've already updated---it is "confusing nonsense" to read in that
"history" that I've updated the SAME thing three (3) times

  3. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

You want to do the updates from Windows Update, but first:

    click on Start

    selct Run

    in the box type regedit

    click OK

    regedit will open, navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

    Software

    Microsoft

    Internet Explore

Tell me what the values for the following two keys are

    Build

    Version

  4. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Shouldn't effect drive space. I think the issue may be the version isn't correct in the registry. His system is reporting 5.6.0.2800.1106 drop the 5. and it's the correct version number for IE6SP1.

    "arrived" within HKEY_LOCAL etc

    opened that folder

    had

name (line under) Data (line under)
    (default) value not set
    Fulllogging "No"

both the above had weird icons on the left---tried to open them
and got nothing (as best I can recall)

there is no "software", nor "Microsoft", nor "Internet Explorer"
showing up on my screen, not even when I click on file, or edit, or anything

and there is no "build", nor "version", yet

  6. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

both icons (to the left) have the letters "ab" within a wiggly piece of paper

  7. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

When regedit opens on the left you have a registry tree, similar in structure to the directory tree in Windows Explorer.

You are going to navigate the Registry Tree on the left:

    Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

    Expand Software

    Expand Microsoft

    Expand Internet Explorer

Note: to Expand click on the + sign

On the right side once you get to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

    Look for these two keys:

    Build

    Version

What are the values for those keys?

  8. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

expand those folders (or the particular HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE etc folder) ??

how does one do that ?? all I know is one can left click, or right click, on any folder----

----how does one "expand" a folder ??

  9. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

oh, click on the + sign

    will do

  10. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

They have a plus sign next to them, clickon the plus sign.

Click-on Internet Explorer not expand for that last registry key.

  11. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

did "expand" to (or within) internet explorer

the is no "build" folder within the internet explorer folder, nor any "version" folder within the internet explorer BUT there is a "version vector" folder within
    the internet explorer folder

  12. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Click on the Internet Explorer folder and look in the Right-Hand column for the Build and Version Keys.

  13. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    oh, something else

in the list of folders (within, or expanding, Microsoft, and that list of
folders INCLUDES the Internet explorer folder), I see a folder named "IE4"
---geeez, is "IE4" Internet Explorer 4 ?? I would have thought IE4 would have been "erased", or "deleted", maybe three (3) years ago

"build" has (with the quotation marks) "62800.1106"

Go ahead and run Windows Update. Install all updates whether or not they have been installed in the past. Ignore your Install History.

Do they updates a few at a time. Many of the update will require you to answer yes at any prompts to be installed. Most of the time updates require a sytem restart to take effect.

Get all the Critical Updates first. Later you can go back and get the recommended updates.

  18. eigenvalue

    am back---OK, will do

I might add "unofficial" Windows 98 SE etc service pack one (1) appears to have reduced my resources

In the past, without that "unofficial" service pack, immediately after boot (and just only looking at the icons on my desktop, and being offline), resources usually were at around 74%, whereas now, with that service pack installed, and offline, resources are starting, just after boot, at around 66% (or a drop of about 8%)

  19. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

That may be caused by the Windows 2000 color scheme you can try unistalling that from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

    11:25 PM (EST)

am posting from a local library PC

something (or some things) have messed me up good

when I rebooted, yesterday (the boot at around 8:00 PM), I naturally tried to connect with NetZero (and, after that, with OTHER programs, such as Major Geeks)

"usually" a message popped up which said "a fatal exception has occurred
at 0028:0001F9 in VXD MPFbocks(01). The current application will be
    terminated.

    * press any key to terminate the current application

*press+ctrl+del again to restart your computer. You will lose any unsaved information in all applications."

so, I guess I cannot (currently) bring up ANY application (or application program) from or via my desktop PC

my restore disc is, possibly, in some box, somewhere, so, don't know
if I can find that restore disc---never had to use that disc in the past

"help" is no help when typing in the box "VXD", or "fatal exception", or similar
----some box (via help) had a bunch of circles (with line items) to put dots in, and the circle next to the "phrase" VXD didn't work, as when I put a dot in its cicle, and then hit "continue", a blank page came up

I can selectively (one at a time) uninstall that which was installed yesterday.
or uninstall much of that, and then, after each uninstall, reboot again and see if this problem has been solved---I would start with the smallest,
    in size, yesterday installed programs

on another point, that "unofficial" 98 SE sce pk 1 apparently contained
some critical updates, as PRIOR to installing "unofficial" etc I had 11 critical
updates to do, whereas AFTER I installed "unofficial" I only had four (4)
critical updates to do (so, seven (7) of those eleven (11) critical updates
were in "unofficial" 98 SE svc pk 1 ??)

    I see nine (9) programs in "add/remove", which I don't recall seeing
prior to yesterday, and all nine (9) may have neen installed yesterday
---Tweak UI is one (1) such a program, and that looks like a
good "candidate" for uninstall--can't recall (instantly) if Windows 2000
color scheme is one (1) of the nine (9) new programs on that list

the laptop remains "inoperative" (re connecting to NetZero)---after the
mess (above), and re the laptop, I uninstaled all prior stuff pertaining to NetZero (in the laptop), shoved in that new Netzero CD, and tried
(for the laptop) it "doing its thing, but "non-success" re that

I'm going to be "ferrying" back & forth (re home, and library), today, so may not instantly respond---same, I guess, re you and "ferrying"

  21. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

the nine (9) candidate programs for uninstall are

    Internet Explorer Q890923
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 update 2
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6SP1 and Internet tools
--and THAT's the program I've already installed three or four times

    Microsoft VGX Q833989
    Outlook Express Update Q330994
    Tweak UI
unofficial Windows 98SE service Pack 2.0.1
    Windows 98 KB89711 update
Windows 98 second edition Digital Video update

only two (2) of the above were off the four (4) critical updates downloaded
yesterday, ie cumulative Sec update for IE6sp1 (K890923, which is DIFFERENT from, apparently, Q890923 above)

and sec update for IE6sp1 (KB833989), which, apparently, is not even on the
list o nine (9) possible candidates to uninstall

two (2) more of the four (4) critical updates instaklled yesterrday are

814078 security update (Microsoft Jscript version 5.6, etc)---and I do
NOT even se, in "add/remove" that that program WAS installed yesterday

and sec update (of 3/7/02, yes, 2002) having to do with buffer overruns,
and, apparently, was discussed in Microsoft bulletin MO 02-014, AND
I do not see that program on the list in "add/remove", so, perhaps THAT program wasn't installed yesterday

  22. Shadow_Puter_Dude

Ok, unistall the unofficial Windows 98SE service Pack 2.0.1. Something didn't go right during the update. See if things start working right.

  23. Shadow_Puter_Dude

Upon further research that error message is being caused by the McAfee Personal Firewall. Update your McAfee Anti-virus and Personal Firewall using McAfee's update service. If that doesn't resolve the error message you may have to uninstall you McAfee Personal Firewall and reinstall it.

am back (at the library, 1:40 PM EST)

actually, I cannot find the size (in KB, or MB) of those programs installed yesterday within my PC at home, but I wrote down on a piece of paper the size of all (or some of them) yesterday

three (3) more candidates for add/remove (ie remove them) are

    Compaq diagnostics for windows
    Compaq IE custom
    Compaq IE5 customization

possibly some of the above three (3) are causing this "fatal exception" stuff ?? eg conflict with what I installed yesterday ??

my scanner, and printer, at home are working, and in spite of this
    "fatal exception" problem

the last two (2) programs (??), above, are not in C\program files

just read your two (2) messages below---will write them on a piece of paper,
then go home, then try that

I might note that "Windows 2000 color scheme" is NOT on that list of add/remove programs (although the icons look different, and the print under them appears to be different, relative to early yesterday

shall I FIRST do your suggestion re McAfee, or FIRST uninstall the
"unofficial" SE svce pk 2.0.1 ???

  25. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I doubt if I could update the McAfee stuff, seeing as I'd probably have to go online to to that, and right now I cannot go online (via NetZero), as that
error message "pops up" when I've tried to go online

I can, as an alternative, LOWER the security level (of McAfee) from "standard", to "trusting", or, as another alternative (if I recall correctly),
disable McAfee---but I can't remember HOW to install, AFTER uninstalling,
McAfee's service(s)---such would particularly be a problem if I must, to do
that install, go online--as, again, I cannot, at this time, go online

---is this "catch 22", or similar ??

  26. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Uninstall the "unofficial" SE svce pk 2.0.1 first and see if that resolves the issue.

May have to disable the firewall completely if you keep getting an error related to MPF (McAfee Personal Firewall).

    OK

hey, when I checked my email (incoming) at the library, at the bottom
of your last two (2) postings there was

"PLEASE DO NOT PM ME WITH QUESTIONS REGARDING COMPUTER RELATED
    ISSUES"

the library people say this PM means "private message"--I don't have your
e mail address, so can't private message to you--course, that PM could mean
"don't post concerning computer issues after 12:01 PM"

I don't mind getting e mails from you via Major Geeks, and hope (don't
know) I haven't been sending you e mails via Major Geeks
--I'll make below, in blue, "no e mail notification" and hope that results in me not e mailing you via Major Geeks

I added a signature to my profile. I've been getting PM's lately. I probably need to check the setting again, I didn't want it added to the Email.

Did your Antivirus and Firewall come installed on the computer when you bought it. If so you may not be able to unistall the Firewall seperately. It may have been part of the McAfee Internet Security Suite, and if that is the case you will have to unistall the entire suite, then reinstall to fix the error.

I dd the uninstall of the "unofficial" 98 SE svce pk 1---that results in

A)----being able to connect to NetZero (whew !!)

B)----Tweak UI still remaining on that relevant "add/remove" list
don't know what was "tweaked", but I guess that doesn't matter
---"unofficial" etc was removed from that "add/remove" list

C)---in my Windows update history, four (4) entries (>??) for yesterday,
    which was supposed to happen

D)---in my windows critical updates to be done, ten (10)
---and eleven (11), minus four(4), is not ten (10), but I guess that doesn't
much matter---the 11 was what came up (as "critical updates to do") as
THEIR number day before yesterday, or yesterday---I'll do that ten (10) one (1) at a time, and then reboot, and thereby se if that error message ever comes up as a result of that, and while "leaving" McAfee "as is", ie I'll reboot ten (10) or so SEPARATE times

E)---a Master Geeks shortcut showed up on the desktop

F)---the horizontal bar (at the bottom) is black (background) with icons on same---doesn't matter, one way or another

G)---other results "I know not what at this time"

the Mcaffee firewall etc did not come with this PC when I purchased same, ie purchased that maybe a year later

don't know what was the result after "making blue", re additional options below, no e mail notification---and clicked on the TOP "submit reply", not the bottom "submit reply", for this posting--for my prior posting I clicked on the BOTTOM "submit reply"--the grey box below still has "no email notification" showing

don't understand what "signature to my profile" means

    Good.

TweakUI is used to 'Tweak' settings in Windows. Useful at times, otherwise no need to worry about it.

Windows Updates - you are going to need to run the updates, but this time update from the Windows Update site. Do one update at a time, that way if there is a problem we will know which update caused it. It the update sight wants you to apply an update you may have already done go ahead and do the update.

We'll leave the McAffe stuff alone for now. If the problem comes back after updating you may need to update your McAfee Antivirus and Firewall.

You can change your desktop display options from the control panel. You can do that after we make sure everything else is working correctly.

The "DO NOT PM ME..." is the signature I added, it automatically gets added to my posts and emails unless I uncheck "Show your signature." I got to remember to do that when I'm posting.

have completed the first five (5) of the ten (10) critical updates which must (??) be done---took time, because after each disconnected, re-booted, etc
---did some chores too (in between)

before I did the sixth, a message popped up from McAfee (they were trying
to download, to me, an update---automatically by them)

the message said (in part) "if you are using a pop-up control program, you might experience problems with downloading McAfee virus scans. To avoid problems, we recommend that you tempoarily disable pop-up controls before you begin" (and I assume they mean before I begin doing any McAfee virus scan)

well, I guess I have (recently) installed pop-up control programs, but don't
know when, nor where, nor what---nor which--nor what temporarly
disable before doing a McAfee virus scan---any suggestions on that ??

---course, IF I have a pop-up contril program (or series of such programs),
they aren't working "great", as pops-up keep "popping up"---but the pop ups
don't really bother me, as I can "X 'em out" quickly

what do you mean "run the updates" ?? don't they "run" automatically (and without me telling them to run or execute) ??

I haven't even gotten, yet, to the 42 OTHER (and non-critical) Windows updates for Windows 98, OR Windows 98 SE

--some of the critical "updates to be updated" are/were dated as late as 1999, and I'm surprised I hadn't done those updates maybe three (3) years ago---gez, I've looked, periodically, in Windows update, and often their stuff to be updated appears, to me, to be sort of NOT pertaining to what I want to do with this PC (eg, not edit home photos, nor TV shows, nor get involved in music downloads)

damn, I missed seeing "Kingdom of Heaven" (the movie)---looked like
a good movie (re the Crusades, and "in the spirit" of "Gladiator")--I like
those "the good ole' days" type movies (even when "the good ole' days" weren't "that good")

  32. Shadow_Puter_Dude

You don't have a popup blocker as far as I know. If you didn't do the McAfee updates when it asked run the McAfee Auto Update.

I should have said download and install the updates.

Yes there are bunch of non-critical updates, it's important to get the critical first, then you can go back and get the non-critical updates later.

  33. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

have completed the ten (10) critical updates (and at least one of them I, apparently, had done back in 2004, as same appears in my "history" of installed updates)---no problems re that error message coming up, ie
    didn't come up

McAfee, right now, is trying to give me an unsolicited update, as I see their little yellow arrow, on a green background, "dancing down" in the right hand corner of my toolbar (??), or taskbar--a pop up just happened which says
"McAfee has just done a virus scan update" (or words to that effect)
--McAfee doesn't, as best I can recall, ask me if I want an update done, ie they "just do it" (maybe, can't remember, I had clicked on, months or years ago, "Yes, McAfee, always do automatic updates")

of the 42 non-critical possible Windows updates, most of them talk about (??) "in spanish, in polish, in Rusisan, etc", and such doesn't interest me
---BUT they have an Outlook Express 6 (1.8 MB), and that DOES interest me [seeing as, I believe, I currently have/use Outlook Express 5 (not 6)]

Can I "avoid" doing that "unofficial" Windows 98 SE SVCE pk 1 ?? ---seeing as
I've already done those ten (10) critical updates ?? It may be that MOST of the "unofficial" thing just (??) contains those ten (10), plus "froth", and even tho that "unofficial" thing was/is some 15 MB in length

"amidst" (??) all this I've been putting off some "self teaching" re Visual Basic,
or putting that off for months---not (ever) "enough hours in a week" to do tasks which must be done---too late (for me) to become a "whiz bang" computer programmer (like those who did the programming for or within ANSYS, or in /within Fluent), but, hmmmmm---let me see where I can "make a buck" via programming in Visual Basic !!!

  34. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

McAfee should tell you there is an update, I think it is only automatic if you set it up that way. Don't remember it's been a couple of years since I've used McAfee.

Those spanish, polish, Rusisan, etc are language support files for IE6, you don't need those.

You don't need to do the "Unofficial Update" it isn't necessary anymore.

Gave up programming, too many headaches, literally. Everytime I was writing code I would get really bad headaches. Of course haven't tried to program since I started wear glasses.

OK--I'll do the Outlook Express 6 update, and click on "yeah, Microsoft, give me automatic updates"---BUT I hope those rascals don't give me, say six months from now, some update (which I require) dated, say, in 2003

may never get to learning (or struggling with) Visual Basic--eg don't have
the "patience" required in computer programming

have "made blue" instant e mail notification, below, and clicked on the lower
"submit reply"--I guess that refers to ME being "given", or sent, incoming e mails re Major Geeks postings, which doesn't bother me

am I "almost there" re struggling with fixing the laptop ??---the laptop (forgetting for the moment not being able to connect to NetZero)
is REALLY slow (in responding), and even tho it has 512 RAM---I recently
read somewhere that LCD monitors are, usually, real slow in response relative to the response times of cathode ray tube monitors, and I guess that could be a contributing factor re my "forever waiting" between hitting (say) the keyboard keys, and getting a response on its LCD monitor

I almost forgot that my ORIGINAL "objective" was to download, into the desktop PC, Acrobat Reader 5, or 6--I'll try to do, again, that shortly

and now that I've got/purchased that serial cable "transfer mechanism means" I SHOULD try to transfer (or copy, ie have duplicate files in BOTH PCs)
files from the desktop PC to the laptop PC---would be quicker (if it works) than to burn a CD, in the desktop PC, and that put such a CD into the CD reader slot in the laptop

am concerned, also, about this desktop PC having its hard drives "grind to a halt"--after all, hard discs "spin", and spinning usually/always implies bearings, and bearings, eventually, fail

You're almost there with the Desktop. Get Acrobat 6.02 or .03 ??? it is the last version of Acrobat Reader that will run on Win98SE. I don't mind the email notifications, they can fill up my inbox in a hurry, ;) .

Automatic Updates is a good thing. You shouldn't need any old ones again, I hope. Sometimes things get corrupted and a reinstall of some update is neccessary.

Yes Harddrives fail often, but they're much better than they used to be and last a lot longer. I've got one in use on another computer that's 10 years old and going strong.

The system architecture of a laptop is different than that of a desktop, and will always be slower than a desktop of similar specs.

Go ahead, learn Visual Basic, one is never too old to learn. Besides it would be a interesting way to spend time.

don't know if it was/is 6, or 6.02, or 6.03, but will try to get it

I downloaded, and installed, Outlook Express 6---almost immediately
a "critical update" to OE 6 "popped up", so, downloaded and installed that

may never do the learning of Visual Basic (time constraints)

am not sure if we've tested (or I've even downloaded and installed, into this desktop PC) all the stuff you pointed out in your prior postings, or all the stuff
in the "old basic tutorial"---I'll check on that--for example, did we "unzip"
hijackthis, or any other installed program ???

hey, last night I did a Google web search "on a guy" I knew (when he was a Lt. Col.)---Louis Wilson---didn't know him well, to say the least, ie was more or less "Yes, Col. Wilson", or "No, Col. Wilson", and not "Give me a break, Col Wilson"---three (3) or four (4) interesting web search results "popped up"

I don't like, at all, the slowness in the response of the laptop eg makes me
hit too many keys too fast, and/or "dislocates" "my train of thought"

When you DL Acrobat Reader it will give you the latest version that will work on your Operating System.

Yes we unzipped HijackThis to C:program Files\HijackThis.

Whenever you install something like OE6 and it has been out for awhile there will be some critical updates that you will need to download and install.

The laptop is going to be slow for awhile. You are going to need to do the same things we did for the desktop, but you will have to do them in 'Safe Mode'. You won't be able to connect to the internet in 'Safe Mode' because you use a modem to connect. We will have to things a little different. When you are ready to "debug" the laptop let me know and I will guide your through the process.

    got your below

without going into a detailed response, shoot, I can't, yet, even connect the laptop to NetZero, or, more precisely, can't get on the Internet with the laptop

must do some other unrelated (to this) stuff---same amounts to an old saying ("the road show never ends"), which is sort of coupled to ANOTHER old saying ("geez, that stock did 'the dead cat bounce'")---and all that
is sort of coupled to a saying (??) re the metro NYC area, ie "geez, he would
steal the dimes off a dead man''s eyes"

well, it is a "good thing" I served in this USMC many, many years ago.

Completely Uninstall NetZero from the laptop, then Install the new version from the CD. If it still doesn't work, it may be a winsock issue run this program WinSock XP Fix 1.2. If that doesn't fix it, we'll try something different.

I hope the Winsock is already installed in the laptop, as I cannot access the Internet, at this time, from the laptop

two (2) days ago I had uninstalled all NetZero stuff from/in the laptop, and also two (2) days ago, after that, shoved the NetZero new CD into the laptop, etc---still couldn't connect, after all that

the modem (??) at NetZero, apparently, is not communicating with the modem within the laptop, and I'm directly connecting the laptop to the phone jack in the wall, ie bypassing the phone altogether---in the local CO (central office) of Verizon, that jack must be uniquely identified with my
phone number---my modem settings might be incorrect, or possibly
I didn't follow the CD's instructions (but I doubt that)---my modem could even be only periodically "operative"---the "run of the mill" settings
(for NetZero) are "simplistic", but once one gets into the modem settings
(and related settings, or whatever) the OTHER settings (or whatever) become confusing (to me)

maybe (who remembers) two (2) weeks ago I did connect to the Internet
via the laptop, AND via the "old" NetZero stuff in the laptop--as I defintely
have IN the laptop some or all of those numerous downloads (and installs)
    of CCleaner, etc etc

I can't get into the laptop's problems for around another ten (10) hours or so,
or until after about 5:00 PM EST today , ie it is a "the road show never ends" type day---ANYHOW, at least I don't, at this time, have to communicate via a computer in the local library

BUT, I might add (has nothing to do with the laptop's problems)
I guess I'll have to "endure" (??), today, some more "who do you know ??"
"games", plus some "dancing around" re "how tough can you be ??",
and "hmm, you wanna discuss the Navier-Stokes equations ?? well, do your homework, first, re that"

    the "silliness" continues

The Winsock Fix, doesn't install winsock it fixes any issues there nay be with the winsock. Go bask and follow the NetZero directions. I'll be in and out all day today. Going to the doctors the moring and have a banquet to go to tonight.

what on earth is going on with respect to (I guess) Outlook Express 6 ??

I just sent an e mail to my son, with two (2) attachments , and when I
looked at "sent" (that outgoing e mail of mine) a message "popped up"
with a yellow background which said (actually or in effect) "OE removed access to your unsafe attachment X, and Y"

Is that Microsoft will not ALLOW me to e mail attachments (via Outlook Express 6), OR that I can't view the attachments which I sent to my son ??
---and who is PREVENTED from that "access" ?? the SENDER, or the RECIPIENT, or both ??--and who on this earth has decided that my SPECIFIC attachments, to my son, today, are "unsafe" ?? Microsoft ?? McAfee ?? Bush ?? Cliinton ?? Martha Stewart ?? who ?? what ??

I NEVER had that problem with Outlook Express 5 (or 5.5), and if I cannot
e mail attachments to others via OE 6, then I would prefer to "dump" or uninstall OE 6, and go back to OE 5 (or 5.5)

geez, it is or would be really "silly" to prevent a sender from having access
to what such a sender HAS (hopefully) sent, as the attachment(s) in question would already be in his or her computer, and FURTHER access
to such an "unsafe" document or file is like "closing the barn door" (so the
cows won't escape) AFTER a fire, when the cows have already escaped DUE to a fire

It's been so long since I have used OE6. OE6 by default deletes attachments with certain file extensions, such as exe, vbs, and so forth. You'll have to go into the OE options and change the security settings.

A maybe (not so) easier route would be to use winzip and zip the files up and then attach. Annoyingly, outlook express blocks several attachment types... there are ways to change it in security like shadow said.

    Good suggestion.

    OK guys--check this out

I installed Outlook Express 6 (as an update) on 6/1/05---I didn't look at the security settings after that (so, I guess by default, they were set to the
most "stringent" security), until late last night (see commentary below)

the install "time of day" is NOT specified in my history of installs of Windows updates

on June 1 I sent out three (3) e mails with , hopefully, attachments

two, or three, of those e mails gave me that "blockage feedback"---can't remember if it was two, or three---and STILL don't know
if that blockage refers to the RECIPIENTS, or to me (the sender), or both

to FURTHER complicate this, I just printed out (had saved them) those three (3) outgoing e mails, and ALL three (3) specify attachments were attached
---so, I still don't know if the RECIPIENTS did, or did not, receive those
attachments, since the blockage message says (effectively) "can not open"

two of those three "outgoings" can easily be checked (as to if or if not received, AND opened), as my son was the intended recipient---the THIRD can't easily be checked (ie a "pitch" to a venture capital person), and it would
be an embarrassment, to say the least, to PHONE that ven cap guy and ASK him if he ever received those attachments

I changed the security settings (re Outlook Express 6) late last night, so, this
problem should NOT come up again---MOST of my attachments are TIF image G4 compression files (or TIF G4 compression files), ie just newspaper articles scanned into this PC (where compression saves "consumption" of hard disc etc capacity, and SPEED re transmitting a minimum number of kilobits per second)---or maybe it is tiff, not TIF, whatever, but NOT jpeg, nor bitmap, nor non-compressed, nor etc etc

Once you changed your security settings do you get the warnings anymore?
