I just got in, and, yes, it is about a quarter after midnight

I haven't (so far as I know) sent out any e mails, with attachments, AFTER I changed the security settings--and my son (who can be rather
"stubborn") told me over the phone that he deleted those two (2) e mails
(sent prior to changing the security settings), and he doesn't remember
if, or if not, he read any associated attachments--ah, to be forty two (42),
or so, years old (he), and to be too much "been there, done that" in HIS view

(sigh) I just he (my son) is going to have to figure out, for himself, that if one's brain isn't "exposed" to verbal words, and/or to printed words, then such
information NEVER gets into "one's brain" (for "processing", or "non-processing")

bottom line. no warnings received possible, since haven't sent out any e mails,
with attachments, SINCE I changed the security settings--will "test it"
tomorrow (as I will sent out at least one (1) e mail with at least one (1)
attachment on June 3 or June 4)

and I may yet HAVE to phone that ven cap person, and "inquire" (probably via or of his secretary)

ANOTHER problem---ever since I downloaded, and installed, those ten (10) to eleven (11) Windows critical updates, AND Outlook Express 6, this desktop PC has been "crashing" a LOT---even when I have 50% resources available----how can one's PC crash (if one has 512 MB of RAM) with 50% resources available ?? I always thought that a LOT of RAM prevents crashing, and
some people have told me they ony have 256 MB RAM, and their PC's don't crash often--and my C drive has 30 gig capacity, and only about eight (8) gig of that "consumed"

and that 50% resources available is via "system tools" >>>"system information", and not via memokit

  3. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Many things can be causing the crashes, Software/Hardware. Without doing a full test of the system hardware it is hard to narrow. I would suspect that it is a software problem mainly. The biggest memory 'Hogs' you have running are McAfee Anti-Virus, Personal Firewall and Memokit. The first two are system resource hungry applications.

I was right in the middle of typing (and checking the spelling of)
a long winded posting response "herein" when, "you guessed it", NetZero
"ended my session"--so, I lost what typing I had done on that

It is time for a businesslike, but somewhat sarcastic, e mail to be sent to
NetZero technical support, basically saying "WHY are you guys ending my sessions TOO QUICKLY" ??

will post, again, later in the day

  5. Shadow_Puter_Dude

May be time to cahnge ISPs. I don't have the problem of being disconnected. I use Road Runner.

  6. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

just sent my inquiry to NetZero tech support, and "just in time" (??), as they disconected me after a ten (10) minutes session

don't know what roadrunner charges per month, nor know if the have leased capacity in a local CO (central office) of Verizon---I assume NetZero does such leasing from a local CO (of Verizon), and don't have any interest in paying phone charges for non-local CO connections

I disbled McAfee's firewall, and will do so ofen AFTER "booting up"
---such brings resources "up a liitle"---will also eliminate/disable memokit
AFTER "booting up", as that also brings up resources "a little"

a weird icon has "popped up" on my desktop---has a white flag, with
a microsoft flag, and under same is a "horizontal wiggle", and a horizontal line---what is that ??

  7. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

my desktop presently contains 41 icons (including that last one which recently
"popped up") and ten (10) of those icons are shortcuts (and I figure I NEED those 10 shortcuts on my desktop)

  8. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Take a screen shot of your desktop and post it as an attachment. So, I can see what is on the desktop. Hit CTRL+PRT SCR and then paste into PAINT and save the image. That strange one definitely does not belong there. If you don't know what it is get rid of it.

  9. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    step one

where on earth is thre SCR "key" on my keyboard ??

I might note that paint is one (1) of my shortcuts on the desktop, as (sigh) in the past I've hit every so often

    ALT + PRTscan
then hit paint (that shortcut "paint")
then hit edit (when "paint" comes up)
then hit paste (on the dropdown menu on/in or off of "edit")
then printed such out (clicked on file, in paste, then hit "print" in "their" resulting dropdown menu)

or something like that (above), as haven't done such for a couple of months

that "in pursuit" of a "what's on the monitor" (ie the CURRENT window) printout

(sigh) let's do step one, before further steps

  10. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

could SCR be "scroll lock" ?? that's to the right (and next to) "PRT Scan" on my keyboard

hsave never used "scroll Lock" in the past

"simple minds have simple pleasures" (and my mind is "simple") re using this PC

  11. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

The Print Screen Key should be next to the Scroll Lock on the Keyboard.

    PRT SCR = Print Screen

  12. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

just got in--I hope the attachment transmits

I did a "procedure" almost exactly as I do when I want to print out printscreens, eg I used, at the beginning, ALT+PTRSCRN, rather than your
    suggested CTRL+PRTSCRN

note I've "nested" seven (7) foloders into one (1) of the folders (so the desktop doesn't appear to be too cluttered)--the untitled icon is the PRIOR effort icon (which is "blank within")

  13. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    The attachment is not included.

hmmm---geez, I clicked on the LOWER browse (which came up after I clicked on "manage attachments"), a window or box came up, and then up above I clicked on "desktop"
---then all the desktop icons came up, so I just clicked on the "for shadow
6-4-05" icon, etc etc hopoefully the right transmission & upload procedure

so, now I'll try the UPPER browse (which should come up after I click on "manage attachments")---clicked on "browse", then on "your" icon, then hit "open", then clicked on "upload", and then a message popped up which said "uploading file(s), please wait"---waited, then that message disappeared, and then I clicked on the lower "submit"

I might add the "for shadow etc" icon has properties of about 1.39 MB (which, so far as I know, is typical of bitmap files or images)

also, corection, ie I "nested" about twelve (12), not seven (7) dewsktop folders into one (1) folder (to reduce "clutter" on the desktop)

  15. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

perhaps I should have clicked on "save", rather than on "save as" (re the drop down menu file via paintbrush) ??

well, "save as" gets me that icon on the desktop, and I'm not sure where "save" "gets me to"

and what';s the difference between, here, the UPPER "submit reply",
and the LOWER "submit reply" ?? with the lower one is not "doing"
the "additional options", ie with the UPPER one is just transmitting a posting ??

Valid file extensions: bmp doc gif jpe jpeg jpg log pdf png psd txt zip; and the file size is too big. The snapshot of the screen shouldn't be that big, maybe on a few K in size.

  18. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

hmmm--I thought (re usage via major geks) bmp "stood for" bitmap
---when I use paint (or paintbrush) they (??) are ALWAYS "bimap things",
and they ALWAYS consume (?) a lot of capacity, and that's WHY (the large capacity usage) I very very seldom save them, but, as an alternative, print them out, and then scan them back in (in TIF image G4 compression "mode"),
as then that bitmap image in MB in size, becomes (?), always, an image in KB
    in size

why doesn't major geeks allow attachments in TIF image G4 compression "mode" ?? shoot, they ALWAYS are in KB (in size)

I don't even know what you mean by "valid file extensions" and to my knowledge have never made use of "valid file extensions"

whoa---can paint, or paintbrush, be CHANGED to do bitmap images in KB ??
or to do non-bitmap images (in MB, or in KB) ?? I've never gone into paint (or paintbrush) to see if I have options re what type (bitmap, Jpeg etc) images paint, or paintbrush, can do---"this" paint, or paintbrush, came with this PC when purchased some five (5) years ago

  21. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    am back

am still "perplexed" re how does one use "paint" in other than bitmap files ??
---perhaps I have, installed in this PC, an old version of "paint", and therefore should buy some newer version of "paint", and install same in this PC ??
my version of "paint" in this PC is the version installed in various Compaq PCs,sold at Staples, PRIOR to July, 2000---oh, I'm sure various updated (??) versions of "paint" have been sold, or are being sold, in the marketplace, and my installed version could be a "teaser" version

and I still don't know what "valid file extensions" are, or, for example, how one can convert, or change, bitmap files into non-bitmap files, be such
(re below in "manage attachments") bmp, or doc (which I assume means word documents), or gif, or jpeg, or jpg, or pdf (yeah, I've downloaded PDF
files, but never have uploaded PDF files), or png, or psd, or txt, or zip
(and I first learned a little something about "zip" thru you), files

should I go to various "windows for dummies" books (or "other stuff for dummies" PC books), before I even ask these questions, and, specifically in such books, read all I can about "paint", and about "valid file extrensions" ???

  22. Shadow_Puter_Dude

You can use 7-zip to compress the file.

Open 7-zip, navigate to the file you want to zip.

Click on the file (It is highlighted)

Click on Add (Big green plus)

Add to Archive dialog opens, leave default filename.

    Change Archive format: to Zip

    Click Ok.

    Now attach the ZIP file.

  24. Shadow_Puter_Dude

I like it enough that I am thinking about replacing WinZip completely with it. What I like best is that it will compress Bzip, Gzip, Tar. Whereas most comercial archivers only decompress those formats.

OK, I'll try (that's "try", as in "attempt") to do that

hmmm---I guess that (your below) is not in any "XYZ for dummies"

I even made a quick glance at "help" within that "paint"/"paint brush" thing,
and I didn't see any referenc to bitmap files, nor non-bitmap files, nor compressing anything nor "zip", or "unzip"

Those books usually show you how to use WinZip to "ZIP" a file.

I keep forgeting that MS Paint/Paintbrush only saves in BMP on Win98. If you have another graphics program you use you can paste into it and save the image in a different format.

    Your Welcome

  29. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I cannot navigate to the file I want to compress (the "for shadow etc" file on the desktop)

I clicked on start>>programs>>zip file manager
then only left c\ in the box (ie "scrolled up" via the yellow "up arrow", and deleted "outlook express" which was to the right of c\)
then a bunch of items (including some stuff on my desktop) popped up, including "windows"
    then made blue "windows"
then left clicked on "extract" (was hoping "desktop" would pop up, and then I could, maybe, click on that "desktop", and then, hopefuly, that file named "for shadow etc" would pop up)

but after clicking on "extract" an error message popped up which said
    "select one file"
    "Ok"

  30. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    C:\WINDOWS\Desktop is the Desktop Directory.

You don't want to do an "extract." Once you find the file Click Add, accept the default file name and change Archive format: to Zip.

  31. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I don't have any other graphics program in this PC

hey, I think I got somewhere

    used the yellow up arrow

    made blue "windows"
clicked on "file" at the top
clicked on "open" in the drop down menu
    made blue "desktop"
clicked on "file" at the top
clicked on "open" on its drop down menu
on the resulting list saw "for shadow etc"
    made "for shadow etc" blue
clicked on the plus sign within green
    diaolog box popped up
in the dialog box ONLY made "archive format" Zip, rather tha 7zip
icon popped up on the desktop

will try to transmit that icon (or stuff in same)---the stuff in same is only 26.7 KB in size

  33. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

sent my posting below before I read your posting below
---did the compressed stuff (on my desktop, showing its icons) transmit successfully ???

  34. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

geez, that's a LOT of compression, ie from 1.39 (or so) MB, to about 27 KB

can I save stuff to disc, also, by doing that ?? would result, if "yes", in not having to do a lot of printing out, and then scanning the printout into this PC
and, perhaps, even comprise MORE compression (for storage in this PC)
than I could get via TIFimage G4 compression, AND MORE time saved
in transmitting files as attachments (in e mails to others)

course, others might not have the software to open up such attachments
re my e mails to them

  35. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

---sometimes I even e mail, say, ten (10) attachments, virtually always in
TIFimage G4 compression---the total size of such a ten (10) may amount to around 1.3 MB, and others (on the receiving end) complain (??) about the time it takes to download 1.3 MB "worth" of attachments

even me uploading say 10 attachments, where the total size is say 1.3 MB, takes a significant amount of time (at least when only
using dial-up, rather than, say, DSL)

don't know (could, I guess, look it up) what version of Office I have--came with the PC---IF Microsoft Word IS within Microsoft Office, I use the version of Word purchased (came with the PC), or the version updated by the 1st (of two) CD's purchased from "the Software Guy"

why would you use Microsoft Outlook rather than OE 6 ?? looks like the
same thing/stuff to me---when (or if I should) left click on that icon I would get a startup wizard

jumping to that weird other icon, right clicking on same brings up
a dropdown menu---that menu has open with, scan for viruses, send to >>>
cut, copy, create shortcut, delete, rename, and properties (which are 314 KB)

I've seen "open with" before---has about 50 or 60 icons listed, some with wierd names---never knew what to do with "opern with", so, just have deleted (or X) same when it appears---don't know if that is/was foolish
---haven't looked up in "XYZ for dummies" what "open with" does

ie I have about 94 SAMA folders filled, each one (1) with some 200 to 300 articles scanned in to this PC (newspaper. magazine, etc articles)

SAMA stands for "scan all miscellaneous articles"--makes sense ?? particularly if one doesn't want "piles of newspapers" "hanging around" ???

Outlook and Outlook Express (OE) aren't the same thing. OE is a scaled down version of Outlook. Outlook contains more features and is more secure than OE. If you have an old version of Office than you are probably better off with OE6.

Double-click on the Word shortcut, a splash screen should display as Word is opening. It will say something like Word 97 or Word 2000. I need to know if you have 97 or 2000.

    I'm really confused

two (2) CDs were bought about a year ago (from "the Software Guy"), both CDs titled "Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business"

    the first CD has/had

    1)--Microsoft Word (and I assume that's Word 2000, which I "extracted" from
that CD, or assume I extracted)

    2)-- Microsoft Excel (and I assume that's Excel 2000, which I also
"extracted" from that CD, or assume I extracted)

3)---Microsoft Outlook (which I haven't, yet, extracted from that CD)

4)---Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 (which I may, can't remember, have
extracted from that CD)---but didn't we upgrade or update that
    to IE 6.0 ??--some "version" (4.0 ?? 5.0 ? 5.5 ??) was already installed
in this PC when I bought this PC some five years ago

    the 2nd CD has

1)----Microsoft publisher (and I see no need to extract that at this time)

2)----Microsoft small business tools (and I see no need to extract that at this
    time)

3)---Shared Clip Art (and I see no need to extract that at this time)

and there is a FREE update to ALL the above via Microsoft ???

I'll hold off on other points until I hear from you
(eg, there is an UPDATE Outlook to the CURRENT Outlook in the CD I already have ?? and Outlook does require me to type out ALL my e mail addresses
in Outllok Express 6 into Outlook ?? I have a "dummies" book titled
"Office 2000 for windows for Dummies" and at first glance it apears I would have to type, again, all those names and their respective e mail addresses IF I were to use "Outlook")

this "Office 2000---for dummies" book even says, on the cover, I have powerpoint, AND Access, AND FrontPage, AND Photodraw, but I have none of
those four (4) in the "Small Business" edition (??) of my currently owned CDs
on/in Office 2000---and I do seem to recall there is a "professional" edition, in addition to the "small business" edition

IF Outlook must require too much "more learning", am currently "disinclined"
to switch to Outlook from OE 6---sort of a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" way of looking at this (plus I don't even know if putting in/installing the NEW stuff automatically deletes or uninstalls the OLD stuff

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

This is what comes with MS Office 2000 SBE
    • Microsoft Word 2000
    • Microsoft Excel 2000
    • Microsoft Outlook 2000
    • Microsoft Publisher 2000
    • Microsoft Small Business Tools

You should be able to import your OE6 settings and address book into Outlook 2000.
