Looks like I've got a "mess", eg haven't installed Outlook (from my CD),
so how can I (or how is it possible to) I update same ??

haven't installed publisher, so how can I (or how is it possible to) update same ??

haven't installed small business tools, so how can I (or how is it possible to) update same ??

won't my PC be "confused" trying to update stuff which isn't even in this PC ??

do have "shared clip Art" on a CD (from "The software Guy"), but haven't installed same, and apparently there is not any update via your cited update URL below

does import mean "overlay", or copy, or what ?? do I delete or uninstall "what" prior to updating ???

won't installing the OLD Outlook (which I haven't yet done) "bump off", or
delete, or "overlay", OE 6 ?? or if installing the OLD Outlook would that result
in both the OLD Outlook, and OE 6, programs (or methodology) remaining
in my PC ?? ie have BOTH available to me for usage (and "confusion") ??

Apparently the Office Update thinks so. Run the Office installer, it will ask if you want to modify an existing install or if you want to remove Office. Select the Modify option and run all from computer. The second CD you would have to run the installer from that also.

Installing Outlook won't 'bump' OE6 from the system. They are 2 different programs, and have their own installation directories. When you start Outlook it will recognize that you have OE6 and ask if you want to import settings from OE.

hmm--let's see, I've already installed portions of (not the complete) Microsoft Office 2000 small business edition (re the two (2) CDs I have)

and you suggest complete the install of the stuff (re those two (2) CDs I have) I haven't already installed (excluding, of course, Internet Explorer 5.0---because if I installed that I'd be "going backwards" with respect to Internet Explorer---and I guess I've already upfdated Internet Explorer from 5.0 to 6.0)

then, after that, try to do the update of Office 2000, and in the course of that I may be asked to uninstall some stuff, but the stuff they don't ask ne about will be either ignored (like clip art), or "overlayed" (bumping an obsolete
version or whatever), OR won't be replaced or updated (eg, Word
2000 won't be updated if no update exists, and Excel 2000 won't be updated if no update exists) ---I hope that means, for example, the
updated software might give me messages which would say, for example, "hey, you already have the latest version of Word 2000, and you already have the latest version of Excel 2000, so, we (Microsoft) are not going to update your PC with a duplicate, or the same program"

"great" (??????), as I would be able to receive, and send, e mails via two (2) different programs, ie via Outlook (whatever update, or non-updated), and via OE6 (which wouldn't be updated) ???---sarcastically, speaking, that's sure a "bountiful opportunity", and I'll be able to "play" "eny meany miney mo" re which program to use re any particular day (or hour, or minute), and I'll get to look in two (2) different inboxes to determine if I've received any incoming e mail !!!

Complete the install of Office 2000 SBE minus IE5. Office update will update what is installed on the sytem. Some of the updates may ask that you insert the install CDs in the drive.

ok, I think I understand and will try

I notice in my relevant "---for dummies" book that to use Outlook for e mail
I'll need to know (for the NetZero option, as opposed to using Microsoft
Exchange, or Microsoft Mail) POP3 or SMTP information--hmmm

I see also (per page 281 of that "---for dummies" book) I'll need to type in
each name, and e mail address, which I currently have in my current address book, and my "---for dummies" book does not say I can "import" (the correct word ??) those names, and e mail addresses, from OE 6

Anyhow, I guess I never really have to use the e mail "option" within
Office 2000 SBE (or the updated Office 2000 SBE)

---hmm---I guess (sigh) there is also an Office 2001 SBE, and in Office 2002 SBE, and an Office 2003 SBE, and an Office 2004 SBE, and in Office 2005 SBE
---and sooner or later there will be a Langhorn Office 2006 SBE , etc etc etc

    I started the Outlook wizard

on the very next panel became perplexed---as Outlook wizard specifically used the word "upgrade" (with reference to Outllok Express), and since I've
already upgraded Outlook Express to the max possible (with Windows 98 SE),I
don't need, or want, or even can, upgrade Outllok Express (since Oulook Express is already OE 6)

    the exact message is/was

" Outlook can import e mail messages, addres books, and settings from the following programs that were detected in your computer, Select the program that you want Outlook to UPGRADE. If you do not want Outllok to import datsa and settings from one of these programs, click "none of the above""

    choices were/are (in a box)
    Outlook Express
    none of the above

    back next cancel help

so, I made blue "none of the above", and then "next" came up, so I clicked "next"---there was no alternative to "not upgrade Outlook Express, but still import information in the address book from your current Outlook Express"

should I have clicked on "Outlook Express", and not clicked on "none of the above" ?? and hoped (??) Outllok would not try to upgrade OE 6 ???

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Your not upgrading OE6, but upgrading from OE6. It is a poor choice of words on the part of Microsoft. They should have used the word Import.

As far as your POP3 and SMTP settings, look under 'Accont Settings'. However Outlook will import everything from OE6 when you select Outlook Express at the import screen.

After Office 2000 is XP then 2003. I gave XP a try, IMO it wasn't worth the money. Prretty much the samething as Office 2000 but with more 'eye candy'.

  8. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

Ok--I think I understand, ie in the first pane (pain ??) highlight "Outlook Express", rather than "none of the above", and then click on "next"

hmmm---so, there is a/an Office XP, and then there is (an upgrade, or update ??) to Office XP named Office 2003 (Office 2001, and Office 2002, were skipped ??)--or is it Office 2003 can NOT be used with the XP operating system , but only can be used with non-XP operating systems ???

---their (Microsoft's) "clarity" with all this is truly amazing

I think I'd better take some time to learn Visual Basic (or even to, perhaps, learn to program in "C", or "C++", or "java", or even in, "horror of horrors", the Linda computer language)--I came aross a guy about a year ago who said he could program in Linux---hmmm---but Linux is an operating system. and not a computer language, right ??

Select "Outlook Express" when asked what you want to 'Upgrade/Import' from.

    Office 2003 Editions Product Information

I am using Office 2003, it is a vast improvement over Office 2000/XP, and a bit pricey.

"C" and "C++" are probably the two main programming languages used today, with a heavy dose of "Visual Basic" and "Java." Right, Linux is an OS not a programming language.

Yes, there is a SR1a, SP2, and SP3 for Office 2000. When you run the Office update it will give you the updates you need to bring Office up2date. Service Packs generally contain all updates prior to the release of the Service Pack.

hmm--just a guess on my part concerning updates (or, in effect, service
packs) for Office 2000--I may even try to use those Office 2000 CDs I currently own in tha laptop---would the XP OS in the the laptop be "compatible" with Office 2000 (and/or its updates) ??

the Linda computer language is "sneaking up upon us"---came, as best I can
recall, thu Yale, and is (??) used for supercomputer timesharing (or, just about the same things, "clustering", Beowulf "type", grid supercomputing, and virtual supercomputing, and goes under other names too)---under "the vision thing" I more or less saw "clustering" etc "coming around the bend" maybe ten to twenty years ago (and, of course, was frequently "pooh poohed" on that)--geez, maybe ten (10) years from now "you and/or I", literally, will be able to "crunch away" anything at, say, three (3) teraflops per
second, and perhaps such wouldn't cost "you and/ I" an "arm and a leg" to
    do such---

    back to Outlook, etc

I clicked "yes" on "would you like to register (whatever that means)
Outlok as the default manager ?"===does than mean I can no longer send and receive via Outlook Expres 6 ??

I clicked "OK" re "some files added to Outlook contain macros. Be sure to click Enable Macros when prompted to ensure the Customer Manager functions correctly"---what is a macro ??

    next===="macros may contain viruses---etc"
    two boxes
    disable macros
and Enable macros---I cliked enable macros--SHOULD I have clicked on that ??

I did not see any import of m current address book in this sequence, but
I can check (I guess) in Outlook to see if my current address book was imported

  14. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

just checked---my current address book WAS imported into Outlook

Outlook (at least its "layout", or format) looks to be pretty much the same as
Outllok Express 6, so far as sending, and receiving, e mails
---Outlook has more "bells and whistles", however

geez, maybe I can even use "calendar" to remind me to, periodically, use CCleaner, McAfee virus scans, etc etc

"Einstein" "popped up", and then everything stopped doing anything

if so, I'll insert the 2nd CD into the CD-ROM drive, and start downloading or installing all the stuff in/on that 2nd CD into this PC

Office 2000 will run on XP. A Macro is a special file that executes a rotinue automatically. By default they are disabled, as long as your virus scanner is configured to scan emails for viruses you should be safe with the macros enabled.

The outlook calendar can by a very handy tool. After you are done installing Office 2000 SBE make sure you run the Office Update.

'Linda' just what we need is another progamming language.

    received your below

well, I made Outlook my default---however, when I clicked on my little mailbox
(in NetZero's thing) Internet Explorer 6 came up, and a message asked me if I wanted to make OE 6 my default, so, I clicked "no"---then I tried to contact major geeks via your last (former, rather) e mail message, and nothing came up---tried again, nothing came up

diksconnected completely---then re-booted, then "the same ole jazz"
concerning OE 6 being my default, ie my prior instructions (??) concerning OE 6 NOT being my default were NOT carried out

then went to programs>>>Outlook (which has been "born" on that list of
orograms), Outlook showed up, and thru that got to this posting board

it sure looks to me like "my PC" is not taking my instructions concerning OE 6 NOT being my default (re e mail etc), and it is a nuisance having to go to start>>programs>>Outlook to communicate with major geeks--gees, MUST I put an Outlook shortcut on the desktop, and then use that (as OE 6 doesn't seem to be working, in any event) ???

Linda, so far as I know, is ONLY (or primarily) used to connect (??) "teeny
    weeny" (and slow) PC's together to make , "virtually", a supercomputer---and be that 1000 PC's, or, say, 100,000 PC's

I doubt "me as a peon" (??) would ever (usually) know why I could do so much, so fast, with my "home PC"

geez, you don't want to have supercomputer "capabilities" "close at hand" ??

don't know if, or if not, my McAfee virus scanner (or my other virus scanner(s)) are "configured" to scan e mails---suspect "yes", and suspect that "yes" ws before I even installed Outlook

  19. eigenvalue

great--ie now I CAN communicate with major Geeks via OE 6

I guess it is a "random type thing" re which way I can communicate with this posting board or forum, and I have no control over the "random behavior" which my PC chooses concerning such communication

You can put a shortcut to Outlook on the desktop. NetZero wants to use OE6 by default. I'm going to have to research NetZero properties to figure out how to change that,

Yes, you will have to double check the setting in McAfee Anti-virus to make sure they are set to scan email for viruses.

recently (but prior to your fifth posting below) I put that shortcut on the desktop--doesn't matter, ie I'll just have two (2) ways to read, and send, e mails

but I will check out what McAfee does re preventing viruses, and scanning for viruses, and re e mails, or non-e mails

next I'll do (install) the contents of the 2nd CD, and then after that will do the update(s)

hey, I've got ANOTHER Outlook Express program in start>>programs, same named something like "Outlook Express prior to 8-6-04"---should I delete that ?? ---that Outlook Express MAY be OE 5---and should I go to C>>program files and see how many Outlook Express programs I have in there ??---8-6-04 was the date I inserted, into this CD-RM drive, that 1st CD purchased from "The Software Guy"

to go to "E Mail Setup" and do etc would just "complicate" my already "complex life" on all this

  25. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Go ahead delete that old OE.

Doing the "E mail Setup" from NetZero will just make it so that Outlook is the default e-mail client of OE when using NetZero.

I'm not sure if the stuff on the 2nd CD is, or is not, installed

nor even if I had installed same about a year ago

when (or after) I put the CD in the CD-ROM drive, I can't drag and drop the
stuff on to the desktop---when I left click on the icon (in the F drive, the CD-ROM slot thing) nothing happens

when I right click on that icon a drop down menu happens, and when I click (on that menu) "install", a setup thing pops up with three (3) options
---the 2nd option appears most "reasonable", and the 3rd option is an uninstall option

I guess the CD contains 610 MB of data, but if so it sure installs FAST

the main dropdown menu WITHIN has four (4) topics as follows

small business tools (with four (4) "sub-subjects")
publisher (also with four (4) "sub-subjects")
Office tools (with nine (9) "sub-subjects", including "clip gallery", & "word art")
    converters & filters (with two (2) "sub-subjects")

looking around (??) within c>>>program files, that isn't very unformative re what, or what not, programs I have installed within/from the 2nd CD
and start>>>programs just has very shortcuts but isn't informative also re properties of EACH, nor names of EACH

there are no install wizards for any of the stuff on this 2nd CD

perhaps (who knows) the 2nd CD MUST be in the CD-ROM drive slot in order to make use of the stuff on/in that CD, and if so that's a DIFFERENT "methodology" compared to using the "topics" (??) found via
    via the 1st CD

am "stuck in limbo", mainly on this

This is were Office puts stuff for the most part:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office

The installer should have autoran when you inserted the CD in the drive. If you ran it form the drop down menu then everything should have installed.

If it installed you will have a shortcut for Publisher 2000, a folder for Microsoft Office Tools and a folder for Small Business Tools in your Sart -> Programs Menu.

  28. eigenvalue

there is a lot of stuff in both \common files\microsoft shared and in
program files\microsoft office---don't have the patience to compare what was on the 2 CDs and that

in start>>>programs, I thought you said everthing was a shortcut, ie none, on that very lengthy drop down, were/are folders ??

in start>>programs I see (of the 3 you mentioned) shortcuts(??) for publisher, and for small business tools, but nothing for office tools

will wait for your response before doing the update

  29. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

If Office Tools weren't installed that's no bog deal. You most likely didn't instal;l them.

Everything in Start > Programs is a shortcut and Folders that contain shortcuts.

Office Tools gives you additional converters and tools. If you don't routinely open documents from other word processors you won't really need the additional tools.

When you run windows update you can look at the install history for your computer. It will show you when you download a particular fix/update and if the download was successful and whether or not it was installed. You generally won't notice anything new in your folders. The install/update process is updating/replacing files on the computer.
