You mean to "purg" the laptop of SOME "crap" I need to be able to get onlne with the laptop ??

so far as burning any CD (of stuff in the laptop) I don't believe I need an online connection (for the laptop)

well, aside from TRYING to do the serial cables "transferring thing" (of NetZero FROM the desktop PC TO the laptop), I figure my other choices are

wait ten (10) days (for the PROPER NetZero CD to be received by snail mail, OR, say, get an AOL "freebie" CD (they have them at Burger King), then shove that into the laptop CD reader, and get that (hopefully) to get me onlne (with the laptop), and then do a google search (on the laptop), and then download the PROPER NetZero software from THEIR web site

ie three (3) choices (re getting online with NetZero, EVER again, via the laptop)

Need to be online to Purge some of the crap on the Laptop. But that's ok it can wait until you get the new NetZero CD.

Are you saying, in part, it is impossible to do the transfer (thru the/a
serial cable connected between the laptop, and the desktop PC) of
NetZero version 7.0 FROM the desktop PC TO the laptop ?? I might note (but don't understand "it") that Windows 98 SE OS has "the" FAT 32 filing
system (as is curently "formated" ??) while the Windows XP OS uses the NTFS (or NFTS, or whatever it is) filing system, or at least in my Sony laptop

I also don't know HOW , or why, one can, or cannot, transfer LARGE computer programs "between PCs"---for example, NetZero QS version 7.0
has properties (??) of about .99 ("point 99") MB, whereas NetZero "non" QS 7.0 ("plain vanilla" 7.0) is, as best I can recall, over ten (10) MB in length

Are portions (??) of the installed (on the laptop) "purgers" ready to go, to purge ?? ie those programs which don't require connecting to the Internet to do "their job" with respect to the laptop ??

and is that relevant folder, in/on the laptop, ready to burn on a blank CD
inserted into the laptop's relevant (and only) "CD burner slot" ??
---burning CDs (on either PC) is real cheap, ie about 30 cents each, so, to "chuck out" such CDs (if one screws up re WHAT one burns) is OK

am anxious to do, both with respect to the laptop, and with respect to the
desktop PC, as much "purging" as I can, and even though I can't do, at this time, a "100% purge"

---the laptop also "came" (as bought) with a LOT of software (re entertainment "centers", and such) which I will never use, but to uninstall same, I don't feel, would be particularly wise, as, for example, I eventually may give the Sony laptop to one (1) of my grandkids, and they might "like" such software already installed----the laptop is really a "neat" machine, eg 512 MB (?) RAM, a 15 inch LCD (or whatever) screen, 30 gig of hard disc, a CD reader-CD writer-DVD "reader" "combo" drive, etc

Toshiba is NOW selling a laptop with one (1) gig RAM, a 17 (yes, 17) inch screen, and a 100 gig hard disc, but (sigh) I guess that's "overkill" re laptop PCs, while, no doubt (??) a true "substitute"/alternative for ANY new, or contemplated new, desktop PC

am "rambling again" re posting stuff (sigh)

No it's not impossible to transfer files between computers on a serial connection. Just have to prepare both computers for direct connection file transfers.

Once you have the computers connected and communicating with each other there should be no limitations on the size of the file transfer.

Some of the programs on the laptop should be ready to use.

Your ready to burn the CD.

We can get started on the desktop. The laptop may need 1 or 2 more definition updates.

    Nice laptop(s).

Go ahead and burn the CD. Install the programs. The ones that need to be unzipped, we will deal with when we need them.

and, eventually, I guess I can buy an EXTERNAL DVD burner (and connect same to the USB 2.0 "port"/slot in the laptop)---not to burn double-layer DVD CDs, which cost, blank, about $20 to $30 each, re "getting" around eight (8) gigabytes, on/in same, but only do the "cheapies" (the blank single layer DVD discs cost about a buck each, but still have a capacity of about four (4) gigabytes in/re their "single layers")--I've got a LOT of
"backup" CDs already burned (maybe fifty (50) such CDs, each holding about
700 megabytes), and I'd like to "stash away" many of those some fifty (50) burned CDs

our postings crossed---must hit the sack (have to get up tomorrow at 5:00 AM)---the laptop has something called a " files transfer Wizard" (or something similarly named)

  7. Shadow_Puter_Dude

Yes, it is a wizard that will take you through the process.

OK, I'll first burn the CD in the laptop, then take that CD and insert same in the desktop PC's CD-ROM "slot", then transfer (??) those (which will be in my CD-ROM
drive in my desktop PC) on to my desktop (of the desktop PC)---then I should "double left click" on those files to install those programs in my desktop PC ?? I can check all that, afterwards, by seeing which/what programs have been added to, or installed in, my desktop PC ?? and checking, afterwards, either of two (2) ways (re the desktop PC), ie

    1) re the desktop PC, hit start, then programs, and see what NEW programs are listed (in the programs list which drops down)

    or

    2) check into the "add/remove programs" thing (a folder ??) in my desktop PC

I hope McAfee virus scan, firewall, etc (installed in ONLY the desktop PC)won't interfere or block any of that, and re the above I don't need to be online for MOST of all that ??
--I still don't know (precisely) what "unzip" means, nor how to "unzip"

ANOTHER thought---should I ADD in that folder (to be burned) the Acrobat
reader 5.0 program (I guess it IS a program) ?? but how does one do that ??
I don't believe I can drag and drop stuff from the programs folder (or the folder, ??, "add/remove" in the laptop) into some OTHER folder (brought up, or simply one I've "created" on the desktop or window of my laptop)

and what is a "definition update" ?? I don't believe I can currently do same via the laptop, as currently I can't get online via the laptop

  9. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

When you go to install the programs on the desktop make sure you unistall McAfee before your install AntiVir Personal. If there is a firewall on the desktop uninstall that before you install ZoneAlarm.

Programs with an extension of ZIP are compressed archives, to 'unzip' is to decompress the archive. Special programs like WinRAR, PkZip, WinZip, and 7-zip are used to make and decompress these archives.

You can add the Acrobat Installer to the CD if you downloaded it.

Programs that look for spyware, malware, and viruses use a special signature file usually refered as 'definitions'. When installing downloaded programs that use 'definition' files they have to be updated as the are almost always out-of-date when you install the program.

  10. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I'm getting confused again--I had not planned to install Zone Alarm OR Anti-Vir personal on/in the desktop PC---had planned to keep all the McAfee "stuff" in the desktop PC, and keep the installed (and ONLY in/on the laptop) Zone Alarm AND Anti-Vir personal, stuff in/on the laptop
---and had not planned to put the Zone Alarm stuff OR the Anti-Vir personal
stuff on the to-be-burned CD-----my posting "yesterday 14:53" does not mention (nor is contained on the relevant list), to the best of my knowledge, ANY Zone Alarm stuff nor ANY Anti-Vir personal stuff, ie ONLY
"purger stuff" is on that list

ALSO, are you saying that BEFORE I insert the burned CD (which I have not yet burned), I must uninstall the McAfee stuff which is in the desktop PC ??
---if I do that I don't know how to reinstall that McAffee stuff in or into the
desktop PC (AND with the SAME McAfee "account" which I currently have)
---McAfee has a "customer support" thing (and I guess I can e mail them about this question)---I'm basically worrying, at this time, if McAfee's stuff will successfully "block" the installation of the "purger stuff" in/on the desktop PC via the to-be-burned CD which will be inserted in the CD ROM "slot" and/or drive in the desktop PC

I ALSO had only thought of the "alternative" of putting in the folder
(in/on the laptop) Acrobat 5.0, ie ADDITIONAL to-be-burned stuff but don't
know how to put (WITHIN the laptop) the Acrobat 5.0 computer program
into the relevant folder (in the laptop), ie I can't, so for as I know, drag and drop ANY computer program into ANY "created" folder---then (??) (sigh), there is the POTENTIAL problem of perhaps I must FIRST uninstall Acrobat
reader 4.0 (yes, 4.0), currently installed in the desktop PC, BEFORE I try to (sort of) "update", or upgrade, Acrobat reader 4.0 VIA the to-be-burned CD
--Re your "downloaded" Acrobat comment in your posting below, I did NOT download Acrobat 5.0 into the laptop, ie Acrobat 5.0 CAME already installed in the laptop, so, perhaps I am answering your question or point, ie I didn't download Acrobat 5.0 into the laptop, so, therefore, I can't put the resulting INSTALLED Acrobat reader 5.0 on/in the 'to-be-burned' CD

You might note that I had installed IN the laptop Anti-Vir personal, AND Zone alarm, at your suggestion, a few days BEFORE I (hopefully) installed the OTHER "purge type" programs into the laptop, ie the "purge type stuff" mentioned as should be downloaded in that old (??) tutorial "READ ME FIRST---" by the "other guy" (that tutorial first posted, who knows, maybe a year or ago)

As Pogo has said, "We have met the enemy and 'they R Us'" ??? (an attempt at humor in MY confusion)

No you don't have to uninstall McAfee or the firewall on the desktop. Sorry that was my confusion, I thought you were going to install AntiVir and ZoneAlarm on the desktop.

McAfee shouldn't interfer with the install of anything you are going ro install.

No you can't copy the Acrobat installation from one computer to the next that way. You will need to download the installer from Adobe if you want to install it on the desktop.

Hey kadavill been trying to talk him through downloading and installing the tools from the spyware thread. He has 2 computers, a desktop with 98SE IE 5.5, seems to have multiple issues, one of which is it won't download. The other is a laptop with XP, most likely unpatched, multiple issues also, that one can DL. I believe he has serious malware issues. At this point I want to get a really solid idea what is going on with both systems, before I turn him lose on bj and chas.

you've summarized, clearly (and briefly) my mess (or messes)

will now burn the CD, put the burned CD into the CD-ROM slot (in the desktop PC)...then install (that downloaded stuff, originally downloaded into the laptop) by double left clicking EACH relevant file (or icon) AFTER same have "arrived" at the desktop PC, and transferred TO the desktop PC via the CD and I understand some files (whatever) won't install via SOLELY that double left clicking---am I in error re this specific paragraph ??

then, hopefully step by step (or file by file---"unzipping" too, when relevant or necessary) eventually those "purgers" and "detectors" will start doing "their thing"

hmmmm---dare I ask, at this specific instant in time, what ON EARTH
    is/are "bj and chas" ??

well, I ALSO, within the past two (2) days, did a (possibly) "self inflicted wound", ie can't, now, even CONNECT to my ISP thru the laptop, AND I may
have to wait for a CD from NetZero (my ISP) which SHOULD be arriving by snail mail in about ten (10) days

yes, I had SOME protection before on/in the laptop---geez, bought the laptop some two (2) years ago, and for some two (2) years never even tried to go online via the laptop---I didn't even discover, until within the past some three (3) days, that some protection even existed for the laptop---during the process of downloading (to the laptop, the purger- detector- protection, stuff) the laptop "told me" I already HAD "XYZ" in folder "ABC", and that's how I learned some protection had already existed in the laptop

It all started (this snooping around on my part, and about a week ago) when I couldn't download, to the desktop PC, Acrobat reader 5.0,
ie Acrobat reader 4.0 came with the desktop PC when I purchased same
    around five (5) years ago

    shadow

I bought "spyware stormer" about four (4) months ago for the desktop PC. and "disinfect" via "spyware stormer" about every other day

can't download that, at this time, because can't even connect, at this time, my laptop to my ISP---"now" my (??) error message is, re that, something like "can't dial", or "can't connect with NetZero"---and I have a physical connection from the laptop DIRECTLY to the female wall phone jack, with NO phone connected in between---re my answering machine, monitor, surge protector, scanner, and printer (AND desktop PC), all "non-wirelessly" connected, I've got "one big mess of wires

I think I hit some wrong buttons, or clicked on some wrong stuff, or put in some wrong phone numbers, or ??? WITHIN the past two (2) days, TRYING to get NetZero version 7.0 installed in my laptop, whereas my LATEST NetZero (on/in the laptop) is NetZero QS version 7.0, or Version QS 7.0 (the QS "standing for" "quick start")---hopefully, the to-be-received CD (FROM NetZero by snail mail in about ten days) will "clean that up"

within the past week I've also purchased a serial cable (to connect the laptop to the desktop PC), so, perhaps the "transfer Wizard" (within the Windows XP OS in the laptop) will allow me to transfer files etc "back and forth" between the laptop, and the desktop PC, same including, but not restricted to, NetZero files (and folders)---and, no, am not an attorney (although the "including, but not restricted to" "bunch of words" might imply or infer I'm an attorney)

    matacumbie

I have "no standards" to compare to re "what's right"

I do back up (on CDs, re the desktop PC) a LOT of stuff, about once a month---I save "everything", eg incoming & outgoing e mails, attachments re same (except viagra crap, and "investment deals" via Africa, and screwball
e mails re others trying to get credit card info, and simlar jazz), etc---geez, in the desktop PC I have some 350,000 files (including Windows 98 SE files),and I've not yet found a virus via the virus scanner thru McAfee (and do such scanning about once every two (2) months)

"the game plan" is to "root out and destroy" that which SHOULD be "rooted out and destroyed" WITHIN the/my desktop PC, and within the/my laptop, and simultaneously protect both---AND, hopefully, update, upgrade, patch, service packs , "whatever", both---that, in part, INCLUDES Internet Explorer (have, currently, version 5.5 on the desktop PC, but, currently, version 6.0 on the laptop)---or is it Windows Explorer versions "whatever" ?? or is it "Outlook EXpress" version "whatever" ???

I have picked up one (1) these "freebie" AOL "test CDs", wherein one gets free AOL service for, say, 50 days, and I could put one of those AOL CDs into the laptop CD-ROM drive, and THEN (I guess) get the CORRECT NetZero download (to the laptop) thru a web search or connection to NetZero's web site--I'm used to NetZero service, so, "the fear of innovation" is "in my bones" re ISP's

geez, years ago (goes back to the 1960's) I used to do (but not much) computer programming in some machine language, and in one (1) of the FORTRANs (FORTRAN IV ?? who remembers), and in the APL computer language, so, I'm feeling "kinda dumb" re all this---AND in the mid 1970's did some (for want of a better phrase) "pre Internet Internet" business planning
re terrestrial (and satellite) digital transmission (eg, shoot, analog modems
used to exist, transponders used to exist, and still exist, and, for example,
T-1 lines used to exist, and do exist, and 56 KBS transmission has existed since at least 1977)

if you're interested in some of the sophisticated "tools" which engineers (or some engineers) use today, you might want to "hit" the main web pages of two (2) specific companies, ie ANSYS, and Fluent---they both

no sucess re Ad-Aware SE personal 1.05, nor Ad-Aware VX2 cleaner plug-in, nor ccleaner 1.19.108, nor Sysbot Search and Destroy---re EACH of those
four (4) I didn't even see any envelope "flying thru the air"

I also see on your 5/17/05 23.36 posting some stuff I did NOT download via the laptop (when I was able to connect to the Internet via my laptop), so,
that stuff is NOT in my folder of "to-be-burned" files---

    HijackTHIS
    7-Zip

so, these three (3) will not be "CD transferred" to the desktop PC FROM the laptop PC until I go back (or backwards) to other sequential steps

I'm also (PRIOR to burning) going to try the "AOL route" cocerning trying to get the laptop connecting to the Internet (and, after that, downloading
the CORRECT NetZero stuff to the laptop)---don't have the patience to wait some nine days to receive any CD from NetZero---and (sigh)

I don't believe I can install shortcuts (into the desktop PC)

Stinger.exe BECAME a "shortcut to Stinger"---when I click on properties (of Stinger on the CD, WEITHIN the laptop) it is over a megabyte in length, but when I click on properties in/on that shortcut In the CD-ROM "read thing"

when I burned the CD I dragged and dropped (or high lighted on) around 13 files into a window which said something like "files to be burned", then I "burned"---then I put that CD into the slot in the desktop PC---the step above removed ALL those files "from which they came" folder (ie the "Removal spyware, trojans, etc folder on my ddesktop in /on my laptop

then I dragged and dropped into a newly set up folder those files (which were in my CD-ROM drive in the desktop PC---that LATTER folder has properties of about 3.92 MB

then I put that CD back into the laptop---that same CD, in the laptop, has
    properties of 17.1 MB

when I dragged and dropped FROM the CD (now in the laptop) to REPLACE,
in the laptop, the files removed, same worked, ie I had the "Removal
spyware, trojans, etc" folder (on/in the laptop) was, again, filled up with those 13 or so files and folders---then I checked the properties of that folder (matches the properties of what's on the CD, ie 17.1 MB)

    (and al those "sily" shortcuts)

I cannot bring up, below, your stuff in blue--but same does come up in the email I received (re that) from major geeks

When you drag and drop from a CD shortcuts are normally created. When viewing the folder on the CD do:

now open the folder on the desktop, delete everything in the folder, now do:

    Edit->Paste

I'll do your below which ends in "paste"---and with the CD having that ADDITIONAL file

yes, except I have "disabled", not "enabled"
--and "how come" your below is "chopped off" ??? so I don't see the complete page or window ???

didn't work--I suspect I should NOT have burned that additional file "spywareblaster.exe" into that first CD, as that first CD has a folder named spyware blaster, and WITHIN that spyware blaster folder (in/on the CD) there is, already, that SAME file (having the SAME 988 KB)

so, I'll just re-burn another CD (and first, prior to the NEW CD 2nd burning, delete the folder named "Spyware blaster"), then put that 2nd CD in the right slot, then do the "edit-edit-edit- paste thing"--the stuff/files in the relevant folder (in/on the desktop PC) has/have already been deleted, ie contains no files nor folders at this "instant in time"

geez, dragging and dropping FROM folders INTO folders doesn't create shortcuts, but dragging and dropping FROM CDs into folders does create shortcuts ?? hmmmm---very strange

(sigh) ---something is wrong (and haven't gone back and burned a new CD)

with the CD having the ADDITIONAL extra file, and right clicking on that CD (in my F drive with the desktop PC), the properties are about one (1) MB

BUT opening up that F drive, and right clicking on EACH file (on the CD),
and adding up the MB, that totals about seventeen (17) MB--how can the "whole be less than the sum of its parts" ???

Just ignore that folder on the CD, copy and paste everything else to the folder on your desktop.

geez, with the LAST edit-paste, you meant hit "edit" in/on the "trojans etc to be removed" folder, and then hit "paste" (all this re the desktop PC)

Ok, now I've got NO shortcuts in that latter folder, and properties is/are 26 files, and 18 MB

but I still have (re the F drive where the CD is) "the whole being less than the sum of its parts"

and re the laptop, in its "removal spyware, trojans, etc" folder (which should be identical to the Desktop PC's "trojan's etc to be removed" folder, I see (??) only 25 files, and about 17 MB---some file is missing re the latter

Sounds like you have an extra file in the folder. Do a comparison to find the extra file.

yes, had two (2) spywareblaster.exe files---one within the spyblaster sub folder, and one outside the spyblaster sub folder---deleted the one within---and for both PC's---now down to 25 files, and 17 MB re each PC's relevant folder

You say now delete the sub folder of Spywareblaster (same contains its own 12 files) from both PC's ?? there may be information in there I can use at a later date ?? such would bring me down to 13 (at this time) "useable" files

NetZero is disconnecting me if/when I type too much

    Yes, delete it.

Re Spywareblaster.exe, downloaded update(s), and checked all enabling fully protected boxes

but only for the desktop PC---can't download, yet, the relevant updates for
Spywareblaster for the laptop, as can't connect, right now, to my ISP

    No problem.

    On the desktop:

    1. Ad-Aware SE <-- Install, click Check for Updates now and get any updates, then exit.
    2. Ad-Aware VX2 Cleaner Plug-In <-- Install only
    3. CCleaner <-- Install only, then exit
    4. Spybot Search & Destroy <-- Install, click Download Latest Protection Updates, Check for Updates, and then Enable All Protection, then exit. It does a great job of blocking known vulnerabilities as well as known malicious websites. DO NOT enable the Teatimer.
    5. McAfee AVERT Stinger <-- No installation required

The rest we will install as needed.

well, I installed Ad-Aware SE etc, clicked next (or continue), got updates,
and in one intermediate page there were 3 boxes with check marks---"let them stay" (and one of those boxes checked was "scan now")---so, the program started scanning---got up to "deep scanning files on C---"objects scanned 40,722
    Summary
31 running processes 0 processes identified
879 process modules 0 modules identified
    73 objects recognized 2 Registry ??? identified
    0 objects ??? 10 registry values (??) identified
73 new critical objects 61 files identified
    blank blank 0 folders identified

then a message "popped up" (from something I have called "memokit")
which said "hey, you're about to crash, as your resources are ABOUT
16% !!---so, I never got to "exit", and, I guess, that scanning "crashed"
---my spyware stormer, and/or McAfee "virus scanning thing", is/are something like AD-Aware, but I get to delete
or remove the "infections" that spyware stormer finds---I never got to the point of deleting (or removing) any "crap" found by Ad-Aware "this date"

did this Ad-Aware scan "crash" BEFORE it completed its task ??? and/or should I not have left those checks in those three (3) boxes PRIOR to that scanning ??

haven't gotten, yet, to installing VX2 cleaner plug-in etc into this desktop PC

    Re the desktop PC:

About ten minutes ago I installed Ad-Aware SE (and because I see it within Lavasoft when I click on start, and then move to the "drop down", and I see the word Lavasoft)

about two minutes ago I thought I installed the relevant plug in, but do NOT see it ewithin Lavasoft (after clicking start, then see the drop down, then clicking on Lavasoft in the drop down list)

about a minute ago I thought I had installed CCleaner---but I don't see CCleaner listed in the list which drops down thru start, programs
---course, re CCleaner, I had unchecked five (5) boxes, ie
    add desktop shortcut
    add start menu shortcut
add "run CCleaner option" to Recycle Bin context menu
add "Open CCleaner option" to Recycle Bin Bin context menu
automatically check for upodates to CCleaner (this may not work if you have a firewall ???)

should I have not unchecked one or more of those five (5) checked boxes ??---and could that (my unchecking) be the reason I don't see
CCleaner via the drop down list thru start, programs ??

I guess to see if ALL those three (3) programs have been installed I could
go to "add/remove programs" and see if those three (3) programs are there

I hold off doing more installing until I get feedback from you
