oh, now Symantec "tells mre" I must have javascript enabled---well, I don't care if javascript is, or is not, enabled, so, why on earth did they ask me that ?? I don't believe I've ever disabled javacript, ie "anywhere, anytime"
---but who remembers stuff like that ?? not me, for sure

  2. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I'm up to about 14,000,000 bytes received---NetZero must be "having a
fit" (and my RAM "must feel pudgy")

think I'll sign off (go offline) and go back to "ground zero" on this

If you don't have Java enabled just click on "To continue without JavaScript, click here" at the top of the page.

  4. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I have no idea concerning if, or if not, java was enabled prior to trying to do Symantec's security check---should I have "cared" if java was, or was not, enabled "prior thereto" ??

  5. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

If it is telling you the Java must be enabled to continue then yo don't have java enabled. Click on the link at the top of the page to continue without java.

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I'm online again (obviously), and "fresh anew"

as best I can recall it was asking me what my wishes are (with respect to java) the first time, and the second time

so, my wish is, I guess, "no java", so, I should click on "continue without java" if that pops up the first time, and be consistent with that "wish" the second time---BUT Symantec did not ask me to be "consistent", nor tell me
I MUST be consistent re that---in fact I seem to recall they asked me that TWICE---and why must I convey my wishes on that TWICE ???

  7. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

It asked twice because it was installing two different items. Anytime something trys to install you are going to get a message asking you what you want to do.

    eigenvalue Sergeant

well, their "world is turning" (in the upper right hand corner), and I clicked on "wish to continue without java", and I'm almost complely downloaded---and they never asked me that again

course, I let the "bullet" "in my browser is IE 5.0 or above" remain, whereas at the botom of their page THEY say my browser is Mozilla "something", and that I cannot continue
--BUT I "clicked on" "continue" anyhow

and WHY isn't 98 SE listed as an "option" re what is my operating system ??

  9. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Sites just list 98 as the OS for all versions fo 98.

Let me know things go with the Norton scan.

  10. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

well, "their world continues to turn", and my "Little blue bar" (at the bottom) is still has about a thousanth of an inch to travel (before completion of its task)

to pass the time, here's a joke

this 6 year old kid was digging a hole in his backyard

a neighbor came over and said "What are you doing, kid ??"

the kid replied "I'm burying my goldfish"

so, the neighbor then asked "and WHY is the hole so big ??"

and the kid replied "because it is in YOUR cat"

    end of joke

    Good one.

Been reviewing the thread. Just to make sure I haven't missed something,

  12. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

the download, and install, and run, did not work

whoa--they say 98, ME (note the comma), implying EITHER 98, OR ME,
but, actually, they are implying 98, or SE, or ME ?? are you kidding me ??

and they STILL think my browser is Mozilla ?? and that "my browser" SAID my browser was/is Mozilla ??

will "try again" (and is "my hole" big enough for THEIR cat ??)

  13. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

When they say 98 they mean 98 or 98SE.

You are using an older version of IE. IE was originally built from the 'Gecko' engine, which is the same engine that Mozilla uses.

at this time I cannot eliminate Exec

Exec keeps "cropping up" every time I "turn it blue" and then click on "end task"

    what now ??

  15. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Leave it alone for now. Let's see how the system behaves with the Exec process running while you are doing the scan.

  16. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

well, it didn't work anyhow two (2) postings ago

Symantec responded "cannot continue"---"I'm blocking" etc

  17. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

In detail this what they say at the bottom

"This information is insufficient to continue with Symantec Security check. Your computer may be running software that blocks the user-agent HTTD header. The user-agent header provides basic information about your
system and browser. This is usally caused by running software that blocks user-agent"

well, WHICH software (that is theoretically running) is "blocking user-agent" ?? and I DID leave their bullets in THEIR chosen "cicles"

  18. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

It looks like the Exec process is the culprit. Exec can only be 1 of 2 things. Since you use NetZero I believe it is the NetZero download accelerator. Look through the NetZero Options and see if there is a option to disable or uninstall it. Meantime I will look on their site for an answer.

  19. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Do you have NetZero and NetZero HiSpeed installed or just NetZero?

  20. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

my options (or alternatives) re Netzero are (when I right click on their "options")

launch NetZero when I startup my computer (unchecked)
disconnect NetZero when I close my last browser (checked)
close the NetZero task bar icon when I disconnect (checked)

  21. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

only NetZero---the other (NetZero high-speed) thing is a "compression thing" which costs an extra five bucks a month, and don't want, nor need, the latter

  22. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

OK, the exec process is from NetZero HiSpeed. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, and look for NetZero HiSpeed, Highlight it, and click Remove.

  23. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

I've been told "the compression thing" can make downloaded web pages as "fuzzy as one wants to"---well, NetZero can KEEP their "fuzzy web pages"

  24. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

The Exec process running is probably a huge part of your problems.

  25. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

NetZero high-speed is not on that list, so, can't remove/delete same

  26. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

but only a few times have i been able to remove Exec (via maiking it blue,
and clicking on "end task") AFTER doing alt+control+delete

    the thing keeps "cropping up"

I have, on the add/remove list, MANY programs which begin with "Compaq"
--could Exec be WITHIN those programs ??

  27. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

The Exec process is specifically a part of the NetZero HiSpeed Program. Was it installed at one time and the removed?

  28. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

how about I uncheck ALL three (3) of the line items re "options" for NetZero ??? I've already unchecked the first of the three (3)

I don't even understand why most "everything" seems to be running OK
when I have (infrequently) been able to get rid of Exec via "end task"

  29. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    What options are those?

  30. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

geez, what IS Exec ?? or what is its purpose, or function ???

Exec isn't even listed in my list of programs to add/remove, so,
    I guess Exec isn't even a computer program ??

  31. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

back in "the good old days" (of FORTRAN IV, etc) we had, as best I can recall, subroutines--which really were (as best I can recall) "computer
programs WITHIN computer programs"---could Exec be a subroutine, or "program within a program" ??

  32. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Exec is the name of the process, it is the NetZero HiSpeed Accelerator. You are going to find it by that name in your Add/Remove.

  33. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

geez, could Exec even be WITHIN the "massive" Windows 98 SE computer program ?? if so, I don't believe it would be a "good idea" to remove or delete same

  34. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

it is not in that list

there is only one (1) program on that list which begins with the words NetZero---perhaps its name (NetZero high-speed) was changed to some OTHER name ???

  35. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    Exec is a standalone program.

    do this

    Start

    Run

    type msconfig in the box

    click OK

    msconfig box will open.

    click on Startup tab

    find the entry with Exec.exe

    Uncheck the box

    Click OK

    Restart the computer

  36. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

re your 21:48 posting of today, see my 21:25 posting of today
---I just unchecked the other two (2) options----can't see that ANYTHING different happened

  37. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

Re your 21:45 posting of today, I doubt that I ever installed NetZero
    high-speed, but I don't really remember

  38. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

Re your 21:59 posting below, I'll do those steps

  39. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    What are the options?

Exec is a part of that package not the normal NetZero? You may have to install NetZero HiSpeed then Uninstall it to get rid of the Exec process comletely.

  40. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

NetZero disconnected me (earlier than usual ??)

I hit start, then hit run, then the boc came up

typed in the box (without the quotation marks) "misconfig"

    checked/hit OK

a box came up which said

"cannot find the file "misconfig" (or one of its components).
Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries
    are available"

  41. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

    my options (re NetZero) are

launch NetZero when I startup my computer
disconnect NetZero when I close my last browser
close the NetZero Task bar when I disconnect

    previously (about two hours ago)
    first was unchecked
    last two (2) were checked

about a half an hour ago I unchecked the last two (2)

so, now all three (3) are unchecked

  42. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Keep the last 2 options checked.

  43. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

Ok--will check, again, the last two (2)

re installing, and then uninstalling, NetZero's high speed service, sort of (??) implies that NOBODY, with NetZero's high speed service, can do Symantec's
virus checking ?? I would think Symantec would be "peeved", to put it mildly

and, remember (??) the trend micro housecall thing DID work (but I cannot
remember if, or if not, by some miracle, Exec was eliminated via "end task")

  44. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

    Do this:

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information

System Information will open and now do the following:

    Tools -> System Configuration Utility

    System Configuration Utility will open.

    Click on Startup tab

    find the entry with Exec.exe

    Uncheck the box

    Click OK

    Restart the computer

  45. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

I think we managed to unload the Exec service before the TrendMicro scan, that was why it worked. The issue now is getting it uninstalled completely from the system.

  46. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

whoa---I just did, again, alt+control+delete, and when
the box came up notice (besides Exec, and otherline items)
My NetZero free dial-up Internet service high speed

should I "make blue" that, and then click on "end task" ??

I don't want to eliminate their "run of the mill" service

  47. Shadow_Puter_Dude

    Shadow_Puter_Dude MG Authorized Malware Fighter

Let's do this, you have the settings for NetZero written down, I hope. Uninstall NetZero completely from your computer. Then install the New version you just got from the CD. You have the basic NetZero service that must be installed and the NetZero HiSpeed Service which is an addon, which we don't want to install.

  48. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

clicking on the startup tab, and going down the list of programs with boxes,
    there isn't any Exec.exe

BUT there are two (2) NetZero "line items", with boxes, and both unchecked
    already

    they are

    NZ Platinum Internet
    and
    NZ Platinum (2)

geez, could I have installed "plain vanilla" NZ Platinum TWICE ???
but both boxes next to them are unchecked

  49. eigenvalue

    eigenvalue Sergeant

will try tomorrow--am too exhausted, and might screw it up tonight
